Brief history of the city

If you examine the history of Ahtopol, it turns out that it is quite ancient city. Greek settlements appeared here at approximately the same time as in the city. After being captured by the Romans, the city received the name Peronticus. As a result of barbarian raids, the settlement was often destroyed. And so one of the restorations was carried out by Agathon, a commander from Byzantium, who named the newly rebuilt city by his own name - Agatopolis.

In 1918, Ahtopol was completely destroyed as a result of a strong fire, and it had to be restored almost from scratch. Only small fragments of the fortress walls remain from the old city. Among the modern attractions, the monastery of St. John and the Church of the Ascension should also be noted. In addition, near the city there is Mountain peak Malka Papia, which is part of the Strandja Mountains.

From the sea side, Ahtopol looks very attractive, green and fresh. Despite its location on rocky terrain, the city is distinct beautiful scenery and comfortable climate.

The center of Ahtopol is always calm. Resort life is in full swing on the sea coast, and in central regions Tourists can enjoy the atmosphere of silence and tranquility in the city.

It is very interesting to look at Ahtopol from this perspective. From here you can see the rocky area that overlooks the Black Sea. Southern sunny Ahtopol borders Turkey.

There are always a lot of local and visiting vacationers on the wild beach of Ahtopol. The sandy strip near the seashore is reliably hidden from prying eyes by a high picturesque cliff.

Boat pier. Local fishermen leave their boats here and supply the city with fresh sea fish every day. From the pier you can go out to sea for a pleasant walk.

The sandy beach of Ahtopol traditionally attracts many local holidaymakers and tourists. On one side it is washed by the azure sea, and on the other side it is reliably protected by a very picturesque green hill.

Now Ahtopol continues to develop as one of the picturesque cities, because it is attractive from the point of view of construction investments.

Among the coastal Bulgarian towns, Ahtopol is the southernmost. The distance from it to Burgas is 86 km, and to the resort towns of Obzor and Byala (Varna region) - about 165 km.

Sunny Beach
The huge advantage of Sunny Beach (Sunny Beach) is an almost continuous 8-kilometer sandy beach 100 m wide. To this we add a convenient position behind Cape Emine, which serves as protection from strong currents, and a shallow, very gradually increasing depth near the shore.
In the early 1950s. Prominent Bulgarian architects took up the development of this resort. At that time, the sand dunes were still surrounded by dense forest and infested with snakes. In order to get rid of poisonous snakes, hedgehogs were released to Sunny Beach, specially caught throughout Bulgaria, and later a short time the beach was free of snakes. The first refuge for tourists here were bungalows scattered throughout the forest, and later hotels appeared. But only a general tourism boom in the 1970s and 80s. turned Sunny Beach into the largest seaside resort in Bulgaria with 150 hotels and 45,000 accommodation beds. To date, almost all hotels have been reconstructed and meet the highest requirements for comfort and service. If we allow ourselves to directly compare Sunny Beach with Golden Sands in the north, this resort is more dynamic and, perhaps, more hippy.

In any case, it is much more extensive, so bicycle rickshaws and scooter and mountain bike rental shops, of which there are many along the carefully maintained embankment, earn good revenue. Even the police are on Sunny Beach travels by bicycle. Behind the first line of hotels closest to the sea, several tourist trains run from the southern part of the resort to the northern. IN big hotels there are taxi stands; However, drivers rarely turn on the taximeter, and the price is usually agreed upon verbally. Inexpensive city buses run along the street running north parallel to the hotel area.

The beach here is wide, with fine sand and well maintained. It is surrounded in the center and on the southern side by high sand dunes. In the north, unfortunately, similar dunes were destroyed during development. Sun loungers and umbrellas keep you cool and comfortable, and each stretch of beach has snack bars, drink stands, a restaurant, and rentals for all sorts of water-related props. There are pedalos, motorcycles, bananas, huge lifebuoys, and so on and so forth. On some sections of the beach, massage therapists work on sunbeds under awnings; on others, they simply walk among vacationers and offer their services on the spot.

Hotels are located along the coast in several rows. On the first line, where good view on the sea, there are luxury hotels. On the second, third and in some places even on the fourth line, housing is simpler, but much cheaper, quieter and greener: after all, Sunny Beach, like others Bulgarian resorts, abounds in beautiful old trees. Supermarkets provide holidaymakers with drinks, treats and newspapers. Hotel employees turn a blind eye to the fact that guests buy cheaper drinks outside the hotel.

Promenade
The promenade turns into a huge stage for shows in the afternoon and evening. Many bars and restaurants have open-air music bands performing; young people crowd outside tattoo and piercing shops or the bungee tower, while children test their agility on rodeo machines or jump ropes. On the shelves you can buy T-shirts, sports tights, branded jeans, Cell phones and computer games - of course, everything is fake, but at ridiculous prices. When, in the midst of this turmoil, the archaic figure of a gypsy with a bear appears, you cease to understand what time you are in. Training brown bears is not prohibited in Bulgaria, but gypsies have a reputation for thieves and swindlers, and the police invariably drive them away.

The center of Sunny Beach is located near the Kuban Hotel, quite precisely in the middle of the hotel zone stretching along the beach. Here guests can find a post office, a bus stop, a bank and many boutiques selling counterfeit branded clothing. Complementing the mix are shops and kiosks with CDs, American fast food establishments, trendy bars and discos modeled after such establishments in Ibiza, and a water park. Travel agencies offer excursions along short and long-distance routes, fish picnics and Balkan weddings. But, as a rule, it is better to book such excursions directly at the hotel or from a representative of the company that organized your trip to Bulgaria. Experience shows that the offers of “free” tour guides are not always as good as they first seem.

Excursion program
The most popular family excursions in Sunny Beach include a visit to the Dolphinarium in Varna, a jeep safari or a Monster Truck ride along the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. A truck with huge tires on wheels and benches in the back makes dizzying ascents and descents against the backdrop of a serene rural landscape until all passengers are dusted with a thin layer of dust. The trip ends with a hearty barbecue on the lake. No less popular among tourists is a one-day boat trip to “Robinson’s beach,” where Robinson and Friday await guests and arrange games and performances for them. Eat two day tours: one introduces vacationers to the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, and the Rila Monastery, the other is aimed at Istanbul, which is not so far away. Day Tours include excursions to the gorges and villages of the Balkan Mountains, along the southern coast or to the Valley of Roses, where raw materials for precious rose oil are collected in May-June.

Saint Vlas
The resort town between Sunny Beach and Elenite is named after the nearest village, located a little higher on the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Unlike the two neighboring settlements, Sveti Vlas (Sveti Vlas) has its own architectural face. A striking example of this is the Manastira Hotel, built in the style of the Rila Monastery. In addition to hotels, in St. Vlas there are villas and hotel-type houses, which are populated mainly by local and Eastern European tourists. The 1 km long sandy beach, full of coves, is not crowded. Although the village was founded in the 14th century, historical information there is almost nothing about her. Not far from the Manastira hotel you can see the ruins of a monastery.

Chifilka Museum of Applied Arts
The museum village of Chiflika, surrounded by the spurs of the Balkan Mountains, lies near the village of Kosichino (on the road from Sunny Beach through Tankovo, Orizare and the Dyulinsky Pass, about 25 km). In Kosichino there are signs towards the Museum of Applied Arts. In several old houses around a common courtyard, shoemakers, carpenters and potters demonstrate their crafts, which come from time immemorial. A small exhibition room contains national costumes and woven carpets. This complex includes a restaurant where you can try national Bulgarian cuisine, such as lamb on a spit, roasted over an open fire. Upon prior reservation, a fire dance of nestinars can be performed on coals for a group of tourists.

Elenite
12 km east of Sunny Beach on a green slope above a narrower but excellent sandy beach lies fashionable resort Elenite Holiday Village, operating on the All-Inclusive principle. The Elenite complex consists of a comfortable hotel and a whole village of bungalows, recently renovated to European standards. In addition, there is a swimming pool, sports services and playgrounds. Unlike Sunny Beach, there is a more family-friendly and relaxed atmosphere here. Who is looking active entertainment, can be reached by bus to any of the neighboring large resorts.

Nessebar
Modern Nessebar (Nessebar) and the southern outskirts of Sunny Beach smoothly merge into each other. Along the coastline, the border between the two resorts is a large water park with quite loud music.
However, there is one big difference between Sunny Beach and Nessebar: Sunny Beach arose only in the 1950s, and Nessebar was founded by the Thracians already in the 2nd century BC. e. The proliferation of new buildings today with residential areas, shops, restaurants, hotels and the Luna Park fairgrounds is spreading inland. Opposite them, on a peninsula connected to the land by a narrow pier, stands the old Nessebar.

Church of the Pantocrator
In the Church of Christ Pantocrator (Christ Pantocrator), located art Gallery local craftsmen. Built in the 13th century, it is especially interesting for its facade, decorated in the Turkish style with decorative arches with colored ceramics and alternating rows of stone and brick, forming a striped pattern on the facade. The decoration of the eastern apse retains a very ancient element, actually pagan: this is a decorative frieze with a swastika.

St. John the Baptist
Built in the 11th century. Church of St. John the Baptist (Sveti Yoan Krastitel) with a powerful, almost devoid of decoration, façade made of rubble. In the three-nave indoors the remains of frescoes have been preserved. This church also serves as a gallery; In the summer, wonderful classical music concerts are held here every week.

Ethnographical museum
There is a very interesting Ethnographic Museum in Nessebar. It was created in typical house era of national renaissance. Its second floor is decorated with beautiful wooden carvings, while the first floor is built of rough stone and was intended for storage areas and workshops.

St. Stephen's Church
This is the only church in which the multicolor frescoes of the 16th-17th centuries are perfectly preserved. The frescoes depict biblical scenes, among which the scene of the Last Judgment stands out, and portraits of patrons who supported the church with their donations. In the narthex there is an image of a medieval ship carved into the plaster. The church premises are decorated with a magnificent iconostasis and pulpit (XVIII century) with skillful carvings and gilding.

Captain's house
The old captain's house (Kapetanska Sreshta) from the 19th century, located high above the port of Nessebar. The rooms on the ground floor, lined with dark wood, where goods and tools were stored, are today used as restaurant rooms on cold days. But it’s much nicer to sit outside with a view of the Black Sea and the sparkling lights of the beach and hotel area of \u200b\u200bNessebar. True, the idyll is somewhat spoiled by the view of the bazaar below the port, which from above looks like a chaotic jumble of tent tarpaulins, cardboard and scraps of plastic. On its shelves there is everything that is legally and illegally supplied from nearby Turkey, as well as products from garment factories in Bulgaria.

Beaches around Nessebar
The southern coast of the peninsula is surrounded by a sometimes narrow, sometimes wider pebble beach, on which many of those working in Old Nessebar spend their lunch break. Unfortunately, the beach is not cleaned, so it is more suitable for a quick dip in the water than for lounging around to your heart's content.

A beautiful wide sandy beach is located along a spit that juts south into the bay all the way to Pomorie. Here, during socialist times, hotels and departmental holiday homes were built, most of which still operate for Bulgarian holidaymakers to this day. In addition, a lot of people come to this beach for one day, so it is usually crowded here.
The third beach surrounds the bay between New Nessebar and Sunny Beach to the north of the new quarters. This beach can also be very busy in the summer months, although relaxation there is greatly disturbed by loud music from the Aquapark, which is located nearby in Sunny Beach.

The most Better conditions Guests of Nessebar can find swimming spots in Sunny Beach, where buses and tourist trains depart from the bus station in front of the city wall several times an hour. When the sea is calm, boats depart there every hour.

The inconspicuous town of Ravda is nestled 3 km south of Nessebar. This is an ideal place for those who would like to live or dine at a reasonable price near the very expensive Nessebar and at the same time find nice beach. The local sandy beach slopes very gently into the sea, which is especially appreciated by families with small children. Although Ravda is gradually catching up with Nessebar in terms of its tourist infrastructure, it still remains a small, cozy vacation spot for lovers of solitude.

Pomorie
About 14 km south of Nessebar, at the southern tip of Lake Pomorie, lies the modern city of Pomorie. Lake Pomorie (Pomorie Jezero) is a lagoon separated sand dune from the sea, in which salt has been obtained by evaporation since ancient times.
Pomorie is still the most important supplier of salt for Bulgaria, and also provides mineral resorts Bulgaria with healing mud. Hotels in Pomorie also offer treatment procedures. But the condition of these hotels may not entirely please you. Despite the modern hotel complex that quickly grew up here literally on the sand, the beautiful sandy beach of Pomorie now produces a rather depressing impression. However, tourists often drop by here, because it is in Pomorie that the best cognac in Bulgaria, Black Sea Gold, is produced and sold from the factory.

On the spit of the peninsula, among the new buildings, curious visitors can see several houses from the National Renaissance era. Once upon a time there was one like this in Pomorie Old city, as in Nessebar, but most of its houses were destroyed during a fire in 1906. On the western side of the Old Town stands the Monastery of St. George, founded in the 12th century, but which has come down to us in the architectural appearance of the 19th century. This is the only monastery on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast where monks still live. Back at the end of the 20th century. The pious brothers made their own wine, but since only a few monks remained here, the monastery vineyards were rented out. Visitors who politely ask to be admitted through the gate are usually allowed to tour the monastery, which houses a small collection of icons from the 18th and 19th centuries.

The modern Salt Museum on Lake Pomerania tells about the technology of salt extraction and the healing properties of salt mud. Unfortunately, it is not always open.

Burgas
Being at once a port city, a base for a petrochemical complex and a destination for charter flights for holidaymakers on the southern coast of Bulgaria, Burgas has many faces. The outskirts welcome guests to a city of modern panel blocks and industrial enterprises, and the city center with its extensive Seaside Park and a beautiful pedestrian area is charming and friendly.

The central square with train and bus stations, Garova Square, is located in the southern part of the Old Town, southwest of the Seaside Park. Pedestrian zone on the street. Aleksandrovskaya, surrounded by tall trees, street cafes and shops, leads from the square to the north, past the high-rise Bulgaria Hotel, where the pedestrian zone of Aleko Bogoridi Boulevard with beautifully renovated classic houses begins on the right.
There's a small one here Archaeological Museum displays a collection of finds from the Roman, Greek and Thracian eras.

Most guests of Burgas prefer to spend time in shops and restaurants. For the Bulgarian wallet, their range is excessively expensive, but this does not make them less visited. Tourists with a reserve of euros can shop here quite cheaply. Branded clothing, shoes and watches here are usually genuine, as many companies have branches in Bulgaria. But here they are much cheaper than in Western European stores. However, you need to understand at least a little about the products and be sure to check their quality and brand name.

Ethnographic Museum of Burgas
In a typical Bulgarian Renaissance building with a beautiful garden around it, there is this museum with a collection of national costumes, furniture and household utensils from the southern Black Sea region. The most interesting exhibits include fearful masks and kukeri fur costumes, which in some regions are still used to drive out winter spirits and invoke fertility for the new agricultural year. The costumes of the nestinars, fire walkers from the southern Bulgarian village of Bulgari, are also on display here.

In the northeast of the street. St. Cyril and Methodius joins Demokratsiya Boulevard, which leads along the Seaside Park (Morska Gradina) back to the bus station. Many restaurants in Burgas offer a place to relax and eat in the cool greenery or with a beautiful view of the sea, a little spoiled, however, by oil tankers and container ships. From swimming to open beach Due to poor water quality, it is better to abstain.

Burgas lakes
The largest wet biotope in Bulgaria lies just before the gates of the port city. It consists of four shallow lakes: Poda, Mandrenskoe, Vaiya and Atanasov, where two thirds of the bird species living in Bulgaria can be observed. This 9,500-hectare habitat also serves as a welcome resting place for flocks of migratory birds during their migration along Via Ponticum. Hundreds of thousands of birds gather around Burgas in spring and autumn.

Poda Nature Reserve
The reserve is located 8 km south of Burgas on the road to Sozopol. Through telescopes mounted on the roof, visitors can observe Dalmatian pelicans, red-necked geese, avocets, corncrakes and gulls. During the migratory season, storks, spotted eagles and many other winged travelers gather here in flocks.

Chernomorets
In the resort of Chernomorets, a few kilometers north of Sozopol, there is a beautifully maintained city park and a wonderful city beach, which are favored by guests of the local campsites, mostly local residents. In the pretty center of the town, several restaurants invite you to stop by for a relaxing break.

Sozopl
If you drive south along the coast to the artistic town of Sozopol (Sozopol), the road passes through an amazing landscape consisting of lagoons and lakes.
The area, protected as a nature reserve and bird nesting area, can only be visited on a scheduled guided tour. The abundance of birds will provide an opportunity for those interested in ornithology to observe rare species waterfowl and migratory birds.

Like Nessebar, Sozopol consists of the New Town (east of the peninsula) and a spit extending far into the sea to the north, inhabited in Thracian times, on which stands the Old Town with architecture in the style of the Bulgarian Renaissance

St. John's Island
Right in front of Sozopol, an island rises in the sea - the largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. In the 13th century. An Orthodox monastery was built here, of which now only ruins remain. Today, St. John's Island serves as a bird sanctuary, where you can, among other things, observe pygmy cormorants. From the pier to the street. For a small fee you can reach the island by fishing boat.

Beaches of Sozopol
There are two city beaches in Sozopol, both of which are located in the eastern part of the peninsula. One borders the park area, the other extends south of the hill on which the modern district of the city of Harmanite stands, along the coastal road towards Tsarevo. Both beaches are wide, with fine sand, equipped with protective umbrellas and sun loungers and provide a full range of sports equipment for all kinds of water and beach activities.

So far both beaches are firmly occupied local residents, however, every year more and more vacationers from other Eastern European countries join them. In the summer months it is almost impossible to find a free place - so we recommend visiting the beach of the Golden Fish campsite in the north or Smokinia in the south. Almost all hotels in Sozopol are concentrated in Harmanit.

Smokinia Beach
South of the city coastline with its beautiful, pristine sandy beaches framed by forests. Tourists, mostly from Eastern European countries, set up their tents in the shade of trees at numerous, simply equipped tent sites. Located 4 km south of Smokinia, the gently sloping beach, up to 100 m wide, is open not only to tent dwellers and is very popular among young Bulgarians. In general, it is not forbidden to even set up a tent somewhere “in the wild.” The health and safety of visitors is ensured by a couple of simple beach bars and swimming instructors, who are especially attentive due to the frequent strong surf here.

Dunes
The Dunes, a four-star resort that ledges up the hill above the beach, is built partly in the local Revival style (Pelican Building). There is a wide selection of sports and entertainment programs is a whole independent holiday world where sports lovers and families with children can have a wonderful holiday. But the real Bulgaria is practically not felt here. If you like to walk and watch birds, then you will be satisfied in any case, because very close is the Alepu Nature Reserve, a country of lakes and swamps, where paths and bridges have been laid for tourists. Thickets of sedge and reeds provide reliable shelter for hoopoes, scops owls, red-headed ducks and many other species of birds.

Rpotamo River
5 km south of Dunes, the coastal highway E87 makes a considerable detour into the interior of the mainland and at the same time crosses the Ropotamo River through a bridge. Shortly before the bridge, the road to the Arkutino pond with water lilies goes off to the right. True, it’s worth going to see it only in June, when the water lilies are in bloom. The beach of the same name with high dunes borders the mouth of the river. A rare and strictly protected species of sand lilies grows here. The river, only 20 km long, on its way from the Strandzha Mountains to the Black Sea flows through a valley with dense vegetation, where bizarre rock formations, for example, the Lion's Head (Lyavskata glav), rise above oak and beech forests overgrown with vines and ivy.
Travel agencies organize boat excursions around Ropotamo, mainly in the section from the bridge to the mouth, some then go out to sea and go around Zmeiny (Zmiyski) Island, which, like the mouth of Ropotamo, is a protected area. Along the way, you can spot native birds such as purple herons, pelicans and blue kingfishers. Sometimes you can even see sea turtles and snakes. A two-hour boat excursion can be booked in all travel agencies and hotels, or you can negotiate with the boatmen right at the pier near the bridge.

Primorsko
The town of Primorsko, 22 km from Sozopol, was once widely known outside of Bulgaria thanks to its International Youth Center. Here, young people from Eastern Bloc countries spent their holidays in simple dormitories.
After the collapse of the block, the center existed for several more years as a youth camp, then it closed, and in 2005, after a thorough reconstruction, it opened again. And here country house of the last communist president Todor Zhivkov, standing on a beautifully curved sandy beach north of Primorsko, has been perfectly preserved, despite all the changes. It is still used by the political elite.

To the south of Primorsko there is also a beautiful sandy beach that stretches, sometimes interrupted by small rocky capes, almost to neighboring Tsarev, which is located 15 km from here. A dense belt of greenery frames this part of the coast and provides coolness and shade to the campsites lined along the entire coast. The private hotel sector and tent sites are usually filled with Bulgarians and Czechs. But around the former Youth Center, 2 km south of Primorsko, tourism managers are beginning to actively develop the beaches and adjacent areas. For example, the four-star Magnolia club, built for the French, has already been opened.

Kiten
From a purely Bulgarian holiday destination for workers with large departmental boarding houses, it has turned into a beautiful and comfortable resort, which also attracts foreign audiences. Numerous restaurants and boutiques vying with each other to invite guests and buyers.
North of Kiten there is a sandy beach, always quite crowded, while the more rocky and windswept shores south of the village favored by surfers.

Tsarevo and Ahtopol
The stretch of coast from here to the south is considered the best windsurfing coast in Bulgaria, and the Bulgarka campsite near Tsarevo serves as a meeting place for surfers. Tsarevo itself is somewhat reminiscent of the long-forgotten cities of the Wild West. Behind it, the E87 highway turns inland towards Malko Tarnovo, with only one very rough country road following the coast, still indented by headlands and coves, further south to Ahtopol (Ahtopol). Picturesquely located on a peninsula, surrounded on both sides beautiful bays, Ahtopol remains relatively inexpensive resort, popular mainly among Bulgarian tourists.

Sinemorets
This place will soon change, as the coast between Ahtopol and Sinemorets, located 8 km away, has become fashionable among the creative intelligentsia and wealthy citizens. Now it is actively being bought up and built up. In addition to holiday homes, further south there is an all-inclusive enclave that accepts only tourist groups from Western Europe, - Bella Vista Beach Club resort.

The northern beach of Sinemorets is a strip of beautiful sand in front of the mouth of the Velika River. Here fresh and salty water. On the south beach, rocky headlands surround sandy coves, and they are quite loyal to nudists.

Strandzha National Park
A mountainous, densely forested part of the mainland off the southern coast, a large national park Strandzha (up to 700 m above sea level) is a wonderful but difficult place for hiking The main purpose for one-day and multi-day excursions around National Park Karst formations usually serve as caves, sinkholes and unusual weathering figures among the rocks.
Trips to cultural treasures such as churches and monasteries in small old villages are also popular.
The flora and fauna here are extremely diverse: in addition to wild boars and red deer, wolves live in this area, black storks build their nests on bell towers in the spring, holly, laurel and rhododendron grow near reservoirs. |
