Treatment in Portorož

Portorož has been known as a healing resort since the 13th century, when Benedictine monks from the monastery of St. Lawrence found healing salt here. Today in Portorovo medical centers they use salt-alkaline deposits, salt or mother water (acqua madre), peloids - sea healing mud, thermomineral water (extracted from a depth of 750 m, contains sulfur, sodium chloride and other ingredients of marine origin, combines medicinal properties mineral waters underground sources and sea water). It uses salt from the Sechovel saltworks, where it has been mined using the old natural method since the 13th century. Entertainment and attractions of Portorož

Today Portorož - popular place recreation for families with children, as well as youth. There is enough entertainment here for every taste: a lot of live music, slot machines, animation on the beach, children's water slide, children's clubs at hotels (open in July-August). In addition, the resort's comfortable hotels offer their guests modern swimming pools and excellent restaurants. As for attractions, it will be difficult to “outdo” nearby Venice. However, you can try: go on an excursion to the ancient towns of Piran, Izola or Koper. From their coastal zone opens great view to Istria. Nearby is also the most beautiful karst cave in Europe, Postojna Jama, the Lipica farm - home of the famous Lipizzaner horses, which were supplied to the royal Austrian court. Portorož is also a popular place for congresses. Active vacationers will be able to enjoy jogging at the resort - the shady embankment is conducive to this sport. Popular and aquatic species sports, such as boat trips along the Slovenian and Croatian coasts. The cruise goes from Portorož to Ankaran and gives a lot of emotions. You can take a high-speed catamaran to Venice, Rovinj or the Brijuni Islands. Fans of medieval architecture should enjoy a walk to Predjama Castle and a visit to the Salt Museum. For lovers of Mediterranean cuisine, fish picnics on boats with excellent wine and food are organized. Modern air-conditioned buses take you to the Karst region with its picturesque waterfalls and alpine lakes. All excursions can be purchased from representatives of tour operators or local excursion bureaus.

The Adriatic coast of Slovenia has not yet been seriously considered as an option for a full two-week beach holiday. But in vain! In vain, because the sea here is the cleanest, and the local beaches can easily compete with the lagoons of Croatia.

In addition, local towns are real museums under open air, hotels and service are an order of magnitude better than their neighbors (Croatia and Montenegro), plus Trieste and Venice are within easy reach, which means beach holiday can be combined with a rich educational program.

In general, Slovenia is full of surprises. Settlements on the Adriatic coast were for a long time partners of the Venetian Republic (during the period of the latter’s power), which was reflected both in the appearance of the cities and in the local language - Italian language in Piran, for example, it has equal rights with Slovenian, and since Slovenian is close to Russian, there should not be any big problems in communicating with the local population.

PORTOROZ: THE MOST STYLISH RESORT ON THE COAST

Portorož leads the list of the most fashionable resorts in Slovenia; it is also called its analogue (note that even the names are similar).

In the photo: hotels on the Portoroz embankment

Along the long embankment, amazingly beautiful hotels have been erected; the local one is especially memorable Hotel Palace, looking like a palace commissioned by Louis XIII.

In the photo: a hotel with the self-explanatory name Palace

Next door to the hotels, as they say, in best traditions Monte Carlo, a casino, vacationers ply along the embankment either on foot or on electric scooters operating on the Segway principle. In a word, dolce vita as it is. Local beaches, alas, they are not sandy, but stone (however, this is always the case in the Adriatic, it’s worth remembering Croatia), and therefore special stairs are adapted for descending into the water.

The sun loungers are installed on the lawns near the beach cafes (I must say the cafes themselves surprised not only with stylish interiors and an excellent menu, but also with reasonable prices).

From the point of view of historical attractions, Portorož cannot boast of anything; this place is simply excellent resort area for those who want to enjoy a swim during the day and sip cocktails in excellent bars in the evenings.

But the lack of attractions in Portorož is not a problem, because the neighboring town of Piran, rich in them, is just a stone’s throw away.

PIRAN – THE PEARL OF SLOVENIA

A feeling of aesthetic ecstasy begins to take hold already at the entrance to the city: the road goes around the mountain, and from the top an amazingly beautiful view of the Piran embankment with yachts moored to it, the azure sea and the red roofs of ancient houses opens up.

There are always problems with parking in the city (and it is expensive - 3 euros per hour), so it is best to leave the car in a multi-storey parking lot outside the city and go to the city on foot along the embankment.

In the photo: yachts on the Piran waterfront

Piran has a population of just over 4,000 people, but the city boasts interesting story. It was never part of the Venetian Republic, but was a partner of Venice.

The fact is that there are salt lakes outside the city, and Piran was the main supplier of salt for the Most Serene Republic. However, the influence of the Venetians is constantly visible here: firstly, bas-reliefs with the famous winged lion (the symbol of Venice) decorate the walls of buildings, and secondly, the very structure of the streets - they are narrow here and it is very easy to get lost between them - reminds of the city of Gandola.

But first of all you will get to the Piran promenade. It is used both as a berth for yachts and as a place for swimming. The water, despite the presence of boats, in the lagoon is blue and absolutely transparent. To enter the water here, as in Portorož, there are iron stairs going down from the pier.

And on the pier near the lighthouse there are many cafes, where you can easily lose track of time while sitting over a glass of wine in wicker chairs.

In the photo: cafe on the Piran waterfront

The town itself seems like a toy. In the center is a perfectly round square named after Giuseppe Tartini. Tartini is an Italian composer and violinist, a native of Piran, his statue rises in the center of the square, and higher on the hill, if you raise your head, you can see the second symbol of Piran - the statue of an angel crowning the dome of St. George's Cathedral.

In the photo: monument to Giuseppe Tartini in Piran

There is an interesting explanation for the fact that Tartini Square has such a regular shape. In past centuries, this place was not a square at all, but a backwater where ships docked. Then, since the water in the closed lagoon did not circulate and, as a result, rancid, the city “closed the lagoon” with slabs and a square was created.

The lagoon in those days was enclosed by a fortress wall, but after the harbor was transformed into a square, the need for it disappeared, arches were cut into the wall and apartments were built (as you understand, in ancient times serfs built strong, and therefore wide, so squares enough for apartments). It's funny, but many Pirans still live in the wall.

The streets are connected to each other by a system of passages, which makes them resemble a circulatory system. At first, there is a high chance of getting lost: since the streets are thin and merge into one another, you can take a couple of wrong turns and end up at the starting point of the walk.

In the photo: Giuseppe Tartini Square in Piran

But this is not scary, because the city is tiny, and all the roads here inevitably lead either to Piazza Giuseppe Tartini or to the embankment, so even people with incurable topographical criticism will have to try hard to get lost in Piran.

To fully enjoy the beauty of Piran, overcome laziness and temptation to stay in one of the coastal cafes and climb the hill to St. George's Cathedral. From here you have an excellent view of both Tartini Square and the Adriatic Sea, and, by the way, if you look closely, you will notice faded outlines on the horizon big city- this is her, the beautiful Venice.

In the photo: Piazza Giuseppe Tartini from a bird's eye view

But to see Trieste, you don’t need to look closely, it is on your right hand. Shore by left hand belongs to Croatia.

In the photo: tower and lighthouse in the city of Piran

Up the steps you can reach ancient castle, which is located on a hill above the city, and if you decide to go down, you will find yourself on the street of artists: local galleries sell paintings, mainly seascapes.

In the photo: a street with galleries in Piran

Of course, you can find a lot of nonsense in the shops, but if you want, you can also find very interesting works by local artists. And finally, about what is worth trying in the restaurants of Piran and Portorož. As you might guess, all kinds of seafood are held in high esteem in the coastal towns of Slovenia. Sardines are inexpensive but incredibly tasty; they are served here grilled, salted, and deep-fried. In addition to sardines, restaurants serve all the “classics of the Adriatic”: sea bream, sea bass, and so on.

Another local specialty that is worthy of attention is the various versions of squid. Fried rings, boiled (as part of salads) and baked squid with sheep cheese inside. However, when ordering a dish, remember that the portions here are gigantic, so one plate may well be enough for two, or even three.

In the photo: Malvasia wine and Slovenian mineral water

Regarding wine. Malvasia is widespread in Slovenia; it differs from its Croatian counterpart in its more refined taste, which is understandable: due to its close proximity to Italy, Slovenia has winemaking traditions at a higher level than in other Slavic countries.

Other noteworthy delicacies: local natural apple juice, exactly the same as our grandmothers made, and yellow bread.

Another one begins 5 km from the city interesting park- “Sechovelskie saltines”. Here you can not only enjoy the natural splendor, but also see how salt is extracted in the mines - in Portorož this is done using ancient technologies.

This is where they are located best hotels Slovenia on the Adriatic Sea: first of all, the large-scale Lifeclass Portoroz complex (Slovenia, Apollo, Riviera, Neptune, Mirna and Grand Hotel Portoroz).

Holidays in Slovenia are not only about spa relaxation. In Portoroz and its surroundings - the ancient towns of Piran, Izola and Koper - historical buildings have been preserved. Locals- polyglots and know a lot about entertainment. Every place, even the smallest one, is full of activity. cultural life. For half a century, Portorož has hosted the international open-air sculpture exhibition Forma Viva. All exhibits of the participants remain in Slovenia (some are in the parks of Portorož, others in neighboring cities); over the 55 years of the exhibition, a collection of 120 sculptures has been collected.

You can't ignore the entertainment facilities. The Laguna Bernardin water park is the largest in Slovenia. It is noteworthy that the complex is divided into two large parts, one of which is intended for noisy and active visitors, and the other for those who come to relax and unwind in silence. The pools use sea water and are heated in winter (up to 29-31 degrees).

Reservoirs

Slovenia is rich in reserves fresh water, and its quality is so high that it can be drunk from the tap. Trips to Lake Bled, the treasure of the Julian Alps, are regularly organized from Portorož. This small saucer lake, only two kilometers long, is a tectonic basin. The mountains protect the lake from cold winds, so in the summer the lake warms up well, but the swimming season here is short - only two months (July - August). In the middle of the island rises a tiny island on which the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the 17th century. And on one of the cliffs overhanging the lake stands Bled Castle. It was founded back in the Middle Ages, but most of the surviving buildings date back to the 16th century. Anyway, it looks like a classic medieval castle from historical films - powerful bastions, towers with cone-shaped roofs, etc.

Climate

The climate, as in the entire coastal part of the country, is sub-Mediterranean.

The Alpine mountains shelter the resort from cold air currents from the north.

Even in winter, the thermometer rarely drops below 10 degrees.

The average temperature in summer is 27 °C.

There is practically no sweltering heat like the tropical one in Portorož.

The beach season begins in July and lasts until September.

Kitchen

Cafes and restaurants Portoroz is replete with seafood delicacies. Of course, there is no problem with authentic Slovenian food. Local wines are very popular, especially Malvasia. Neighborhood with Italy and the common historical past could not but affect local cuisine, the influence of the Apennines is noticeable even in the names of the dishes. Gourmets definitely recommend trying gambretti with fried potatoes and cevapchichi sausages. Those with a sweet tooth will be impressed by the abundance of all kinds of ice cream. Well, the most unique Slovenian dish is the dessert “potica”. This simple nut roll was once nicknamed the “ambassador of Slovenia” - so great was its popularity.

Natural healing factors

The first beneficial properties local water noticed by the monks of the monastery of St. Lawrence in the 13th century. However, until recently people came to other cities of the country for treatment with thermal waters. However, in 1991, hot water was discovered in the vicinity of Portorož. mineral springs, and very soon they acquired the appropriate infrastructure, appeared health complexes, spa centers, drinking pump rooms. Water is extracted from the Ancient Sea, whose age scientists estimate at 42,000 years, from a well 705 meters deep. Favorable climatic conditions cannot be ignored.

An increased content of iodine, bromine and, of course, phytoncides released by coniferous trees was found in the air of Portorož. In general, air mineralization in Portorož is 500 times higher compared to large cities.
