And to make these memories more tangible, you should purchase traditional Greek souvenirs: first of all, handicrafts - ceramics, jewelry, as well as sea sponges, cognac, grape and anise vodka, cheese and, of course, olives, olive oil and natural local cosmetics based on it. And, most importantly, don’t forget about your fur coat.

Paralia Katerinis Hotels

There is no point in considering Paralia Katerinis as a high-class resort - all the hotels here are urban-type with a small number of rooms, only one or two of them have a swimming pool. Most hotels are category B (“three stars”), with meals on a breakfast basis.

Entertainment and attractions of Paralia Katerinis

The natural wealth of this region deserves special attention, because it is not without reason that it is called Pieria, which means “fertile”. There are a lot of protected areas where unique species of animals and birds live, and the coastal waters of the Aegean Sea are incredibly rich in fish - to such an extent that these places are popularly called the “fish city”.

Mount Olympus

Those who associate vacations primarily with new impressions and educational excursions can also be pleasantly surprised by Paralia Katerinis, because here is the legendary Olympus, covered in hundreds of myths. The slopes and foot of the mountain are distinguished by picturesque landscapes, and the top is often hidden by clouds. You can climb it along numerous winding paths, admiring the majestic landscapes, breathing in the heady mountain air and the aromas of laurel groves.

Resort surroundings

And at the very foot of Olympus there are the ruins of the most ancient sanctuary city - Dion, which was perhaps the most important spiritual center of the ancient Greeks. Ancient sculptural fragments and even ancient Greek mosaics have been preserved here. Most of the valuable exhibits are in the nearby archaeological museum. Very close by is the picturesque village of Litochoro, where the unique atmosphere of the Greek province reigns. Also near Dion, in the small settlement of Vergina, there is the grave of the father of Alexander the Great - King Philip.

In addition, not far from Katerini there are the ruins of a later, but also beautiful Platamon castle, built by the Venetian knights. But one of the most unusual and majestic places in Greece is Meteora (“Floating in the Air”). This is a whole complex of monasteries, which is located on high steep cliffs. The first monastery here was built in the 10th century, six centuries later there were already twenty-four of them, but only six have survived to this day. This unique place, which has no analogues in the world.

In addition, excursions to Thessaloniki (70 km) and Athens (435 km) are organized. Fans of water activities can go to the water park, located 8 km from Thessaloniki. For amateurs active rest- basketball courts, tennis courts, mini-golf courts, volleyball and mini-football competitions on the sand.

Paralia Katerinis is a small town located on the Aegean Sea, about 4-5 hours by car from Thessaloniki. This resort town, though quite young if we compare it with the Chalkidiki peninsula.

The name "Katherine" is due to the fact that the Church of St. Catherine was built in the 17th century. The city of Katerini, which is regional center region of Pieria in central Macedonia. Smaller villages and towns have already grown around the city, and one of them is Paralia Katerinis. The word "paralia" in translation means beach, that is, these are the beaches of Catherine.

When planning my next vacation to Greece, I really wanted to stay here, since I had already vacationed in Halkidiki, and there was a reason. The fact is that Paralia Katerinis is famous as a “fur paradise”. This is the second fur coat city on the Greek mainland after Kastoria. That is why I really wanted to combine relaxation and the purchase of a real Greek fur coat. But looking through the information on hotels, as well as price categories, I realized that a vacation here is very expensive. In Halkidiki, prices for tours and hotels are much lower. Hotels in the city operate mainly on a bed and breakfast or half board basis. Most of of them are very small, a lot of “three rubles”. There are swimming pools, but practically no territory. The beaches in the city are municipal. They are designed mainly for those who come here for wholesale purchases. Howl options and more large hotels with its own territory, but the cost is very high.

Holidays in Paralia Katerini

I vacationed in June 2014 in Greece at the resort of Paralia Katerini. This resort consists of two small villages, smoothly flowing into one another. So, I was vacationing in the center of Paralia. The resort is not bad, but there are too many Russians vacationing there. You walk down the street and you can hear Russian speech everywhere, from passing vacationers to salespeople in stores. It is not difficult to explain - Paralia is considered one of the fur coat centers. Along the street is located great amount fur shops. There are even fewer souvenir shops than fur coat shops. That’s why our tourists combine business with pleasure: relax at the sea and buy an inexpensive fur coat for themselves.

About beach holiday. The beach in Paralia is long, sandy, but not wide. The entry into the sea is smooth, which is good for families with children. The sea is clean. By the way, Paralia Katerini is a resort on mainland Greece, on its northern side there is the Aegean sea!

I can’t help but say about the excursions. Because I prefer more educational holiday than lying on the beach, for me this resort is just a godsend! All the main attractions of Greece are just a stone's throw away. There is Mount Olympus, and Saints Meteora and Thessaloniki nearby. If you wish, you can also go on an excursion to Athens. There are many excursion bureaus in Paralia Katerinis, the prices for excursions are reasonable. Tours with Russian-speaking guides are specially organized for Russian tourists.

The hotels are mostly small, urban type, most often 3*. So this resort can be safely recommended for unpretentious tourists!

Cost of holiday in Paralia Katerini. July 2019.

tour cost

We decided to plan a trip to Greece on our own. On the airbnb website we found an apartment for 520 euros for four for two weeks in the town of Artemis. The flight from Vilnius to Athens together with luggage amounted to 420 euros, again for four. The transfer from Athens to Artemis and back cost another 35 euros (we agreed with the owner). No visas were required, since multi-Schengen was open.

Excursions were also planned independently. We went to Athens to see the city and the Acropolis. The journey by public transport took an hour and a half and cost about 5 euros round trip per person. Entrance ticket to the Acropolis - 20 euros. Near our town there was historical Museum Vravrony, entrance to which costs 6 euros. It's a twenty minute walk to the museum.

Food and products

The cost of a huge family pizza in a cafe is 18 euros. A plate of kebab with fries - 7 euros. Souvlaki - 1.5 - 2 euros. Beer - 2.5 - 3.5 euros per glass, a cup of espresso in a cafe on the beach - 2 euros. Holiday impressions in September

Late August early September in northern Greece the Velvet season. The air temperature is 26-28°C during the day and slightly lower in the morning and evening. The heat of the day is softened by a light breeze from the sea. The water temperature in the Aegean Sea at this time is 25-26°C. The relatively empty beaches and surprisingly clear and clean water in the sea add to the pleasure.

Vacation with children

At this resort, the sea is one of the cleanest in the world and relatively not deep, but it seems to me that it is still better to come to Paralia Katerini with children in the summer. In autumn, you can visit a water park with your child 8 km from Thessaloniki.

Youth recreation

Paralia Katerini has everything you need for a youth holiday. Inexpensive, mostly three-star hotels, clubs with discos, cafes and restaurants with affordable prices, a lot of excursions and, most importantly, a sea with clean sand. For active youth recreation there is surfing, scuba diving, water attractions, paragliders, there are sports grounds on the shore where you can play volleyball. And this is not the entire list of entertainment for young people who choose this resort for their vacation.

Family holiday

For couples, Paralia Katerinis resort perfect place for relax. My husband and I rested here. In addition to beach holidays, we traveled a lot around Greece. We traveled independently and booked excursions. Both have their pros and cons. At independent travel we enjoyed each other's company, but saw little, and on excursions the opposite is true.

Holidays for the elderly

This resort is loved by retirees from Europe, in particular from Germany, Romania and other countries. They find here excellent Greek cuisine with fresh seafood, a gentle sea, many shops, as well as excursions by bus and boat throughout Greece.

Where is the best place to stay?

We stayed at the Philippos Hotel. The hotel owner Vasilius is very welcoming. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The room had air conditioning, a refrigerator, a TV and, of course, a shower. There was a table on the balcony where you could sit with a bottle of wine and watch what was happening on the street. In short, if goodwill and hospitality are important to you, this is the place for you.

It's worth going to Meteora. Unforgettable impressions! Book a sailing trip to Skiathas Island. Island with golden sand. In addition to swimming on the island, you will be offered an interesting program on a boat during the voyage. You won’t forget Sirtaki performed by the captain and crew! Another excursion to Athens. And much, much more, if you have enough time and energy.

The beaches are very clean. To use a sun lounger you usually need to order something from a cafe. We took a glass of juice. In September, life at the resort calms down. The service is also tired after the summer. Which is what we liked.

What to buy? An excellent and not expensive fur coat. In Paralia Katerini there are many shops where you can buy this product. Local cognac and wine. We brought home Greek olive oil and spices. They also sell aromatic herbal teas here. You can purchase a handmade icon.

Where can I eat?

We chose the restaurant "U Georgiy". It is more isolated and therefore less visited. But everyone chooses to their own taste and there is plenty to choose from.

About the quality of food and service

For dinner, you can choose one restaurant, or you can visit different ones. As you like. The Greeks are very hospitable people and will respond tenfold to the slightest kind gesture on your part. Very often, a restaurant owner treats his visitors to a free glass of wine or a dish that you have not yet ordered. This is so cute! The restaurants serve seafood dishes, caught right there in the sea the night before, and vegetables. It's very tasty.

How much does it cost to eat? About food prices.

A hearty lunch or dinner will cost from 6 to 10 dollars for one. In addition to cafes and restaurants, you can have a snack on the go. For example, eat gyros. It will cost 1.5-2 dollars.

Advantages of a holiday in Paralia Katerini

Dion - a museum under open air, an “island” of ancient history, which can be easily seen in the ruins of the sanctuaries of the goddesses Demeter and Isis, the ancient odeon and, of course, the perfectly preserved remains of Roman baths.

In 168 BC, when the Macedonian state was destroyed, a Roman colony settled in Dion. At the same time, thermae (Roman baths) were built in the city, which are very well preserved to this day.

The baths were beautifully furnished and equipped with the latest technology of the time. They housed changing rooms, with cabins with cold and hot water, rest rooms and even swimming pools. The heating of the bathhouse, the water supply system, the interior decoration, everything was thought out to the smallest detail. Today, more than two thousand years after the construction of this thermal complex, you can clearly see its marble decoration and mosaic floor.

During excavations, marble statues of the daughters of Asclepius, the god of healing, were found, which makes it clear what an important role the Romans assigned to baths in caring for physical and moral health. All statues found during excavations are exhibited in the local museum.
