Monument to the hole

One of the strangest monuments in our city (and perhaps the strangest) is the monument to the hole. Yes, you heard right, exactly the hole. In 1996, another project was launched to improve the city, in particular its pedestrian zones. Two architects Dukhovny and Chernov, together with the sculptor Ivanov, drew up a project and began to implement the monument. It was planned that the sculpture would look like this: an elegant tree branch made of bronze breaks through a block of stone. The authors wanted to show what the desire to live can do. But, for unknown reasons, they did not complete the work. As a result, we see a block of stone with a hole into which a person’s hand can easily be inserted. St. Petersburg residents simply could not ignore this block, and it quickly got its name - the Hole Monument. It’s no joke, but both tourists and city residents fell in love with this monument. It was even endowed with magical properties - legend says that if you stick your hand into the notorious hole and make a wish, it will definitely come true soon. This is especially true for love desires. Who knows, maybe the “monument” was actually intended to be this way? This “miracle of architectural thought” lives in a small park at number 3 on Mayakovsky Street.

Petersburgers are so extraordinary that they sculpted as many as three monuments to Major Kovalev’s Gogol Nose. It just so happened that the first stone nose, like its prototype, left its place AWOL and was found a year later. During this time, residents created a new nose to replace the lost one. But, comrade monument had his fill and returned. So there were two monuments and both were fixed on tablets. Later, in the courtyard of the Faculty of Philology of St. Petersburg State University, a sculpture was installed in honor of famous organ sense of smell.
