Advantages and disadvantages of the geographical location of the South Coast of France for tourism development

Considering that this is where a large number of tourists spend their holidays, you might think that everything is fine on the Côte d'Azur. But travel companies note a number of shortcomings that still prevent the tourism business from developing fully. Among them are:

  • a rather specific climate that may not suit every tourist. A particularly strong difference climatic conditions in the coastal region and in mountainous areas;
  • small amount of natural resources;
  • many refuse to travel because the political situation here is quite tense.

Despite the negative aspects, all resorts are overcrowded, so tour operators also highlight the positive aspects of finding a resort. These include the following factors:

  • a compact but sufficiently equipped area can accommodate a huge number of guests;
  • developed infrastructure;
  • wide variety of terrain. Due to this, it is developing here travel business, and winemaking (in mountainous areas).

Arriving on the Cote d'Azur, you can enjoy the unforgettable beauty French Riviera. Holidays here are interesting and varied, but not cheap.

The Cote d'Azur is called one of the most expensive resorts in the world. But if you plan your trip wisely, you can relax on the coast for the price of a trip to Turkey.

I spent on Cote d'Azur two weeks. During this time I traveled to Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez and Toulon and small cute towns on the coast, for example Antibes. They are just gaining popularity among tourists, so the prices there are moderate. The apartment cost 45 € (3240 RUR) per day, and food cost 13 € (936 RUR) per day. You can also travel between cities quickly and inexpensively.

🏙️ Resorts of the Cote d'Azur

You can travel along the coast for several months in a row. I’ll tell you about a few cities that I remember most.

Nice impossible to see in one day. You want to stay in the city for a week, even if you don’t have clear plans: just walk the streets, the Promenade des Anglais and admire the sea.

Nice's old town looks like Italy with its yellow walls and orange roofs. It's crowded and atmospheric: if you take away all the trendy cafes, the area looks like a medieval one.

Eight kilometers from the center of Nice at an altitude of 370 meters there is an observatory. It can only be visited as part of a guided tour English language. They are held on Wednesday and Saturday from 14:30. The guides talk enthusiastically about the stars, the sky and their own explorations. I'm not into astronomy, but even I was interested.

If you don't speak English, I still recommend going to the observatory. From the territory observation deck overlooking Nice's famous curved coastline, which resembles a crescent.

A ticket to the observatory costs 6 € (432 RUR), they are sold on site or on the official website. Bus number 84 goes there from the city center; travel costs 1.5 € (108 R).

Other Observation deck Nice is located on Castle Hill. From there you can clearly see the embankment and the city as a whole. To get to the platform, you need to walk along the Promenade des Anglais towards the port. On a hot day the climb can seem endless, so it's best to take the free elevator.

Cannes. During the day, it is an ordinary tourist town, with tourists in shorts or swimsuits strolling lazily. But in the evening the city changes. On the Boulevard Croisette you can smell the aroma of expensive selective perfumes, and on the embankment there are parties on yachts.

There are few attractions in Cannes: an observation deck, a castle and a port with yachts, which everyone enters as if it were a museum. Other famous place in the city there is the Palais des Festivals and Congresses, where the Cannes Film Festival is held annually. If no event is planned in the near future, the building looks ordinary. But you can still go there: look at the hall where awards are presented, and wander along the corridors. A ticket costs 6 € (432 RUR) and is sold on the palace website.

You can look down on the city from the observation deck next to the Church of Our Lady Good Hope, which was built in the 17th century. I went up on foot and didn’t regret it: I saw deserted streets and atmospheric alleys.

Overall, I thought a day was enough for Cannes. Then it is better to find a hotel in a more accessible and less noisy city.

Antibes- it's cozy Small town between Nice and Cannes. If you walk around the old center in the evening, it may seem like there are no people in the city. But in reality, everyone, from young people to groups of stylish grandparents, sits in bars and restaurants.

In Antibes, the ancient fort of Carré has been preserved, where Napoleon was imprisoned in his youth. The fort is built in the shape of a four-pointed star and is located in a park area. From the top there is a view of the city and the sea. You can go inside only as part of a tour; a ticket costs 3 € (215 RUR) and is sold on the spot. Even if you don’t want to go into the fort, I recommend wandering around its powerful walls: the Carré looks impressive.

Another popular attraction in Antibes is the Pablo Picasso Museum. It is located in the building where the artist lived and wrote for several months. That period of creativity was short, but fruitful for Picasso. The artist donated many of his works to the city, and they laid the foundation for the museum. Entrance costs 6 € (432 RUR), tickets are sold on the spot.

In Saint-Tropez there are pine trees, and various beaches, and an embankment with yellow buildings. When looking at the photos, it feels like I've been to at least three different places.

Most people come to Saint-Tropez to go to bed late and wake up late. This is a city of fun, parties and noisy bars, which became popular after the release of the film “And God Created Woman” with Brigitte Bardot.

In Saint-Tropez you can see and photograph the 18th century church Eglise Notre-Dame de l'Assomption. Its yellow and pink bell tower is depicted on most postcards in the souvenir shops of Saint-Tropez. The church stands out in size against the background of small and low houses, but it seemed to me that in the photographs it looks better than in reality.

In October, the city hosts a Porsche parade, famous throughout Europe. On it you can see rare models of cars in which stylish European grandparents drive. The dates of the festival are indicated on the official website.

Port Grimaud was built in the sixties of the last century. Land in the swamps was of no interest to developers, but one ambitious French architect found a way out and designed a city on the water. Twenty small islands, fourteen bridges and private boats near every house - this is the whole of Grimaud. You can only travel here on foot or by boat along the canals, which is why the city is called French Venice.

Some yachts in Port Grimaud seem larger than at home. Source: Olesya Kuznetsova / shutterstock.com

Toulon is located 150 kilometers from Nice, almost at the very end of the western part of the Cote d'Azur. The navy is based there, so sometimes you can see not only yachts, but also rugged warships. By French standards, this is a large city.

Toulon seemed unpredictable to me. There are many small streets and alleys in the old center, and each time I didn’t know what would be around the corner. Sometimes a small and unremarkable street ended in a beautiful square with a fountain and restaurants.

Toulon is located between the forest and the azure sea. You can look at the city from above from Mount Faron, 584 meters high. The site can be reached from the center by bus number 40 or funicular, which is located one and a half kilometers from the railway station. A round-trip ticket for the funicular will cost 12 € (864 RUR).

In the city center the beaches are small and crowded. For sea and sand, it’s worth going to Murion, an area in the east of the city. There are beautiful beaches and many fish restaurants.

Also in Toulon, I was impressed by the Royal Tower - a round fort built in the 16th century. When you get up there, you feel like you’re at a Fort Boyard game and Passepartout is walking around somewhere nearby. The walls of the tower offer views of the sea and the bay.

🏖️ Beaches

Every city and village has many different beaches: rocky, pebble, sandy, paid and free. Everywhere there is clear, azure water and incredible views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Spending a day on a private beach in the center of Nice costs 20 € (1440 RUR). IN tourist cities You can rent a sun lounger for 6 € (432 RUR). The distance between them is twenty centimeters, and there are hundreds of people on the beach. It’s hard for me to imagine that you can have a good rest in such an environment, so I always went only to free beaches. They almost always have showers and changing cabins.

Karras Beach 5 km long and located near the center of Nice. In the free part of the beach you can sunbathe on your towel. There is also a volleyball field there. There are a lot of people, but I still felt comfortable relaxing there.

The entire shore is pebble - it is better to swim in special swimming slippers. The sea is immediately deep, the water is clean and refreshing.

Beach along the Croisette In Cannes, almost everything is paid. But at the beginning and end of the embankment there are places for those who just want to lie on their towel.

The shore is sandy, the water is cool. I liked this beach more in the evening at sunset, when the sun falls below the horizon and illuminates the coast with orange light.

Beach of Juan-les-Pins cozy and calm, although located 20 minutes from Cannes. About the proximity of one of the most expensive cities in the world only yachts visible on the horizon resemble.

The town is small and nothing special except sandy and clean beach, it doesn't have it. On weekdays it is comfortable and not crowded, but in the evening the beach is noisy: young people throw parties on the coast.

On Pampelonne beach south of Saint-Tropez there is soft fine sand and a warm, clear sea. But you won’t be able to be alone there: people go to Pampelonne for parties and meetings. Some places are favored by nudists, and the cafes and restaurants there are expensive. I don't like bars and noisy places, so the beach was interesting to me only during the day.

Billionaires Bay Beach small and picturesque, surrounded by rocks and trees. The water is clear and refreshing, and the shore and bottom are rocky. It is better to come to the beach in the morning to have time to enjoy the tranquility.

On the island of Sainte-Marguerite They were holding a man in an iron mask. On local beaches you can go for the whole day: walk along the cedar alleys and visit the beaches in different parts islands. The coastline is rocky, in some places the water has washed out beautiful caves in the rocks. You can also see yachts from the island: there are more of them in the sea than seagulls in the sky.

There is a ferry from Cannes to the island; the journey will take 15-20 minutes. The ticket costs 14 € (1008 RUR) in both directions. It can be purchased in advance on the carrier’s website.

💸 Money

The currency of France is the euro. You can pay by card in restaurants and shops. If you want to leave a tip, tell the waiter the amount and he will add it to the bill. To buy coffee at a beach cafe or a souvenir, it is better to have cash with you.

🚌 Transport

Trains. Trains and electric trains run along the Cote d'Azur. There are train stations in Nice, Cannes, Toulon and Antibes. The most favorable prices- on the regional train TER. It takes an hour and a half to travel from Nice to Toulon, and the ticket costs an average of 15 € (1080 RUR). From Nice to Menton, a city on the border with Italy, it is only 40 minutes. The journey will cost an average of 5 € (360 RUR).

Tickets are sold at station ticket offices, vending machines or on the official website of French railways. Cheaper train tickets can be purchased on the Vigou website. For example, a ticket from Nice to Toulon is on average 30% cheaper and costs 10 € (720 RUR). Payment is accepted only from bank cards European Union. European friends helped me buy a ticket.

Bus. It is better to travel short distances between cities by bus. For example, from Nice to Cannes you can take bus number 200 for 1.5 € (108 RUR). He stops at different cities, including Juan-les-Pins and Antibes. The driver sells the tickets. Travel time is an hour and a half if there are no traffic jams.

In cities I always walk, but you can also get around by city bus. Usually a ticket costs 1.5-2 € (110-146 RUR).

In summer, booking a car is expensive: an economy class car will cost 90-100 € (6480 -7200 R) per day. If you book in advance, you can find a car for 20-30 € (1440 -2160 R). Picking up a car at city offices is usually 20-30% cheaper than at the airport.

🏨 Housing

I usually look for hotels or apartments on Booking, Agoda and Air BBC. On the Cote d'Azur, the most options are on Air BBC. Prices are lower if you book in advance. A few days before arrival good options may not be.

The cost of apartments and hotels in Nice, Cannes and Saint-Tropez is more expensive than in less popular cities. For example, in Nice a small hotel room is not coastline costs at least 70 € (5040 R) per day, in Saint-Tropez - 120 € (8640 R). In Juan-les-Pins, an apartment near the beach will cost 45 € (3240 RUR), a hotel in the center of Toulon - 58 € (4176 RUR).

🐟 Food

Cafes and restaurants. The busier the street, the more expensive the food. In Cannes, on the central streets of the old city, pasta costs 20 € (1440 RUR), a glass of wine - from 5 € (360 RUR). In less touristic cities like Antibes, prices are 5-10% lower.

To save money, you can order food to go. I like to buy hot pizza fresh from the oven, drinks from the supermarket and eat in the park. Such a lunch costs a maximum of 13 € (936 RUR).

Many restaurants in France offer set lunches. They cost from 15 € (1080 RUR). For this money you can eat an appetizer, main course and dessert.

The shops. Fresh, already sliced meat for steak costs 4 € (288 R), three frozen pizzas - 3 € (216 R), fresh sushi - 6 € (432 R). On average, I spent 20-30 € for a trip to the store to buy wine ( 1440 -2160 R). There was enough food for two days. Standard stores: Carrefour, Casino, Lidl.

National products. The traditional socca pancake is made from chickpea flour in the oven and costs 3 € (216 RUR). I didn’t really like it and found it tasteless, but for the sake of experimentation, you can try it. It should only be eaten hot.

Rose wine is considered traditional in Provence. It is drunk as an aperitif or between meals. In a supermarket, a bottle of wine costs 3-4 € (216 -288 R) and more.

In almost any restaurant on the Cote d'Azur you can order tuna salad Niçoise. In hot weather you don't want anything else. A Niçoise usually costs 15 € (1080 - 360 R), chocolate for 1-3 € (72 -216 R).

Lavender is a symbol of French Provence, which includes the Cote d'Azur. There are many shops in cities that sell everything made from lavender. I once bought lavender tea and since then I can’t imagine how I could leave Provence without it. A pack of tea bags costs about 6 € (432 RUR).

Cicadas look like large flies that chirp loudly. You can hear them especially in the evening in parks. They are also a symbol of the Côte d'Azur, so for friends who collect magnets, you can bring one in the shape of a cicada. The magnet will cost 3-5 € (216
