Transcarpathia (Uzhgorod is considered its capital) is an unforgettable region with picturesque landscapes that attract tourists not only from all over Ukraine, but also from all over the world. This is a region with world famous mineral springs, center for horticulture and viticulture. This part of Ukraine is called “green gold”. After all, only here there are so many forests, gardens and vineyards. Only in Transcarpathia are there mountains of unprecedented beauty and mountain valleys, rich in healing mineral springs. And among all this splendor is located the great and ancient Uzhgorod - a city that is interesting in history, its formation and attractions.

A city with a history exceeding a thousand years

The manuscript of the Hungarian chronicler Shimon Kezai indicates that Uzhgorod was founded in 872. The current name of the city indicates that it is a settlement located above the Uzh River. The history of Uzhgorod is as big as the city itself. This is one of the most ancient settlements in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. He is his historical and regional center. City history dates back more than 1100 years. On the site of modern Uzhgorod, the first settlements existed in ancient times. The most famous among them were those that belonged to the Slavs.

History in detail

Historically, over the course of many centuries, three urban centers emerged - Castle Hill, Radvanka and Gorjany. The ancient map of Uzhgorod is an excellent evidence of this fact. A little later, the advantage gradually passed to a more fortified area on Castle Hill. In the ninth century, the fortified castle town turned into an early feudal town-settlement, headed by Prince Laborets. In 903, the Hungarian tribes, led by the leaders Almos and Arpad, stormed the Gungvar fortification for four days. The legendary Prince Laborets held the defense there along with his warriors. Since the forces were unequal, the prince was defeated, and the settlement itself was burned. But after some time, the new owners reconstructed the town. But in 1806, Uzhgorod again succumbed to the attack of Khan Kutesk. He was not destined to take the city.

In the early 40s of the 12th century, Uzhgorod was burned again. Built in 1248 new town in a new location (modern Goryany district). In 1290, Uzhgorod came under the control of the Ugric chancellor Obo Omodey. At the beginning of the 14th century the city was again heavily destroyed. And in 1312 it passed into the hands of Petro Pete. In the 80s of the same century, the first school opened in Uzhgorod.

The influence of the 19th-20th centuries on the formation of Uzhgorod

Before the beginning XIX century the city was under the influence of various dynasties and rulers. During this time, it was destroyed and reborn several times. He experienced times of decline and prosperity. Here the real one grew up and slowly but surely developed. The 19th and 20th centuries had a great influence on its formation. Uzhgorod, whose sights can tell a lot about this time, succumbed to an extraordinary economic scale in the 19th century. Capitalism began to develop throughout the Transcarpathian territory, although the first factories appeared within the framework of feudalism, so the area of the city increased several times. Already in 1837 there were 36 streets in Uzhgorod.

The Ugric Revolution, which occurred in the mid-19th century, had the greatest impact on Uzhgorod among all political incidents. In the 60s, the first printing house with Ukrainian font was opened here. A few years later, a sawmill and furniture factory were established there.

The First World War slightly reduced the pace of development of the city. In 1919, the settlement became part of the Czechoslovak Republic. It was during this period that the city acquired its modern architectural perfection. In 1938, Uzhgorod was transferred to Hungary, and during fascism it turned into a military camp for the Hungarian army. The Second World War did not cause significant damage to the city, but greatly changed its population. After the end of hostilities, Uzhgorod begins to acquire its modern features.

The city's attractions

A city like Uzhgorod is simply teeming with various historical sites, architectural masterpieces, unique streets and all kinds of museums. Uzhgorod, whose sights cannot leave anyone indifferent, boasts the Roman Catholic Church of St. Yuri (George). This architectural monument was erected in XVII century. It was built by Y. Druget on the site of a Lutheran church, which he himself destroyed. M. Bercheni - the heir of Druget - was engaged in the continuation construction work. On the bell tower of the building there is a clock that has been working continuously for more than a century and a half.

Another attraction that is known to every art lover is the art museum (Zhupanat House). This building dates back to the beginning of the 19th century. It is made in the style of classicism and was originally intended to house the zhupanat (city authorities). Since the late 70s of the last century, there has been a museum named after J. Bokshay here.

The largest of the attractions

Ukraine, Uzhgorod in particular, is famous for its castles. Every city in this country has its own royal palace, which every resident of the state can be proud of. In Uzhgorod, this attraction is special, because it has survived more than one century and managed to see a lot of interesting and extraordinary things. The first memories of the castle date back to the ninth century. During this period, it looked like a wooden fortification. At the end of the tenth and beginning of the eleventh centuries, a stone castle was built in the city. It was this building that did not succumb to the attack of Khan Kutesk. like the city itself, it passed from hand to hand. It was destroyed several times, but each new ruler reconstructed it and made his own changes to it. It was under the control of the Hungarians, the Italians, and the fascists. He endured a lot, but managed to survive and now towers over Uzhgorod as a symbol of power, authority and indestructibility.

Castle legends

Uzhgorod, whose sights are shrouded in legends, quietly whispers myths to its tourists, and maybe real stories associated with a particular building. But the local castle is considered the “leader” in terms of the number of rumored institutions. One of them says that in the eastern part of the castle there used to be a cemetery where Drughet, Bercheni and others were buried. And in the southern part of the building, the Drugets at one time built a monastery for the monks of the Order of St. Paul. But this monastery was destroyed a long time ago. On the site of both the monastery and the cemetery today there is the Transcarpathian Skansen Museum. And if there is a ghost, then most likely it appears here first, and then begins to wander throughout the rest of the territory.

Castle sculpture

The castle courtyard is decorated with a sculpture of a wild bird - turul. Uzhgorod, whose sights have their own characteristic features, is proud of this masterpiece. After all, for the Hungarians this bird was a kind of heroic symbol. At the beginning of the last century, an obelisk was erected on the site of this monument, the height of which reaches 18 meters. It is decorated with a turul cast from bronze. After the Second World War, the monument was dismantled, but in the late 80s it was restored again. The sculpture of the turul itself was transferred to the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore.

Don't forget us

Uzhgorod is one of the most ancient cities Ukraine, but he is forever young. He treats all his guests hospitably and loves to welcome them to his territory. This is a kind of “window to Europe”. He withstood a lot, managed to recover from wounds that seemed incompatible with life, and today he gives his guests warmth, beauty, peace and good mood.

Obviously, under the influence of the nearby village of Uzhok (from glory, meadow) and the Uzhoksky pass named after the village; simultaneously Hungarian the name of the river Ung was replaced Slovak Uh. With the incorporation of the city in 1945 G. The name Uzhgorod remains part of Ukraine, and the river on which it is located on the territory of Ukraine receives the name Uzh, consistent with the name of the city, thanks to which now Uzhgorod is - "city on the Uzh River" (and not on the Ug River, as was the case in 1918-1945) .

Population

The population of the city as of December 1, 2015 is 113,604 permanent residents, 115,164 people are the current population.

The population of Uzhgorod grew unevenly. By the beginning of the 90s of the 20th century, the number of residents of the city, together with its outskirts, reached a maximum level of 150 thousand people. However, in subsequent years there was a depopulation of the population. The table shows data from censuses and researchers' estimates.

Main ethnic groups (according to the 2001 census):

During the entry into the Austrian kingdom of the Habsburgs, the economy of Uzhgorod grew, and the left bank of the river was built up. Since 1793, a sawmill operated with the help of an overhead water wheel and a mill with 8 stones began operating. The production of bricks, tiles, and beer was established in the city center. Manufactories opened: a cloth factory, a match factory and a fulling factory, and the first printing house began operating.

Industry

In the local economy, industry continues to occupy a leading role, however, the breakdown of union production ties and the economic crisis have negatively affected the development of the industry. Most of the city's industrial enterprises, in particular such enterprises as the Turbogaz plant, Uzhgorodpribor, Bolshevik, Elektrodvigatel, Tisa Production Association, and the Uzhgorod Plywood and Furniture Plant have lost their production potential. If in 1990, 20.6 thousand people worked at industrial enterprises in the city, then today, taking into account small enterprises and enterprises with foreign investment, there are about 7.0 thousand people. In terms of production volumes, the city's industrial complex has not yet reached the level of 1990 (in 2004 - 75.7%). In terms of product sales volumes at comparable prices, the largest share is occupied by the following industries: production of electrical machines and equipment (28.3%), machinery and equipment (14.9%), furniture production (19.4%), light industry (17.8%). %), food industry (6.2%), production of wood and wood products (5.5%). The light and mechanical engineering industries work mainly on customer-provided raw materials. The main problems of the industry are the lack of investment, the lost domestic market, worn-out and obsolete equipment, and unfavorable tax policy. The enterprises that generate the largest volumes in the city and are budget-generating include Groklin-Karpaty LLC (sewing covers for car seats), Matyash and Matyash LLC, Convector Plant LLC (mechanical engineering), Uzhgorod Garment Factory OJSC ( light industry), JSC Skilur (beverage production), LLC FCA Ukraine (perfume industry). On the territory of the economic zone with a special regime for investment activity (which does not include the city of Uzhgorod itself, but the surrounding rural settlements of Minai, Rozovka, Solomonovo), there are enterprises with foreign investment: Jabil Serkit Ukraine Limited (production of components for electronics), Yazaki Ukraine "(production of circuit harnesses) and "Eurocar" (production of Skoda cars), which provide jobs to a significant number of the population of Uzhgorod and the Uzhgorod region.
