However, they managed to penetrate the battle formations of the Red Army only 2-3 kilometers, after which a counterattack by the 52nd Infantry Division followed. The second German offensive on Murmansk on September 8, 1941 also ended in failure.
As of the early 1980s, more than 1,500 soldiers and commanders of the Red Army were buried here. Since then, burials of the remains found by search teams have been carried out repeatedly. In total, more than 6,000 defenders were buried in mass graves along the Murmansk-Pechenga road Arctic.
