Saint Martin Island reviews. Low-flying planes on Maho Beach, photos and videos Tours from the country

During the Great Geographical Discoveries many European countries acquired overseas territories and colonies. Some colonies subsequently achieved independence, but there are places that still remain “under the wing” (remember this phrase, it will be needed a little later) of the Europeans.

This happened with the island of Saint Martin. This small area sushi in the beautiful Caribbean Sea was divided between France and the Netherlands. And almost in half. The northern part of the island is the possession of France, the southern part belongs to the Netherlands. The name of the island is pronounced slightly differently by the French and the Dutch. Saint Martin for the French and Sint Maarten for the Dutch. Translated, both mean “St. Martin’s Island.”

We will not touch the island itself for now, we will only pay attention to that part of it that belongs to the Netherlands, or rather to West Coast this part. It is here that one of the most dangerous airports on the planet and one of most dangerous beaches peace. This is Princess Juliana Airport and Maho Beach, which is located right at the start of its runway.

It was Maho Beach that attracted our (and not only our) attention. It is located, as we have already said, in the western part of the island just north of Bergo Bay.

Maho Beach on the map

  • Geographic coordinates 18.039228, -63.120539
  • Distance from the capital of the Netherlands is about 7000 km
  • The nearest airport is across the fence from the beach

What is Maho Beach famous for?

The beach itself is unlikely to evoke strong emotions. It's only 300 meters sandy coast up to 20 meters wide. But its southern half... will also not cause any adrenaline, until a giant passenger airliner like a Boeing 767 or an Airbus A320. And a plane can fly over the beach at any time of the day or night. As you understand, planes flying over the beach are not an attraction for tourists. Flying over a small beach, the plane lands literally outside its fence.

This is where the phrase “under the wing” comes to mind. Tourists, basking on the sand, are literally “under the wing” of planes landing or taking off over Maho Beach.

The beach and the beginning of the landing strip are separated by a road and a mesh fence. The airport, located just behind the beach, has a fairly limited strip of only 2300 meters long and ends with Simpson Lagoon. This is a fairly short period for large aircraft. In addition, the runway is limited from the north and east by Simpson Lagoon, and from the south by the bay of the same name as the lagoon.

It turns out to be such a narrow tie, surrounded by water, which the plane should hit. He has to descend as much as possible to land at the very beginning of the runway. That's why planes fly over the beach, almost catching the heads of tourists with their landing gear, and that's why the airport is considered extremely difficult to pilot.

Maho Beach and spotters

It’s natural to see a plane landing or taking off over the beach, and almost at arm’s length, the dream of many extreme sports enthusiasts. They are also called spotters. These are the people who love to watch airplanes. And Maho Beach is the best place for this.

Here you can practically scratch the belly of a landing plane (well, if you jump well). Of course, this is a joke; the authorities do not really welcome such an activity. There are danger signs posted all over the beach area, which hardly stop anyone.

There are signs like this all over the beach, but that doesn’t stop anyone.

The famous Sunset Bar and Grill cafe is located near the beach. Until August 2015, a loudspeaker was installed here to warn of aircraft approach. On the beach you can see information boards where the schedule of aircraft landings and takeoffs is written.

Completely crazy tourists have the same crazy entertainment, something like “withstand the jet stream.” This is when a group of people tries to get caught in the strong current from a taking off plane and tries to resist. Some people succeed, while others fall off their feet, because the flow speed can reach 160 km/h.

We, as sane people, warn you, as sane people, under no circumstances try to repeat this. Games with death will not lead to good things. Moreover, there has already been clear confirmation of this. On July 12, 2017, a 57-year-old tourist from New Zealand was killed when Caribbean Airlines Flight 457 took off from Princess Juliana Airport. The jet stream from the plane strongly threw the woman onto the concrete, as a result of which she died. It’s not for nothing that warning signs are posted on the beach.

Relax on Maho Beach, swim in the gentle Caribbean Sea and sunbathe on the sand in the usual sense beach holiday You're unlikely to succeed. But you will definitely be able to tickle your nerves and get a killer dose of adrenaline.

For a classic beach holiday, head to the island of San Salvador. It is located 1350 km to the northwest. Well, if finances allow, then to the island of Laucala, located on the other side of the world, 13,000 kilometers from Saint Martin.

  1. The beach is popular not only among those who like to take selfies against the backdrop of a landing plane, but also among windsurfers and skinboarders due to the people who periodically appear here. big waves caused by jet streams from taking off aircraft
  2. Maho Beach is completely devoid flora, since this territory is constantly exposed to jet streams from aircraft
  3. In October 2008, Hurricane Omar blew away all the sand from the beach, leaving only bare rocks. The authorities had to bring sand here from other places and fill the beach again
  4. In September 2017, Hurricane Irma already tested the strength of Maho Beach

Beach Maho video

The famous host of the “Heads and Tails” program Anton Ptushkin in this video will show you what a beach with airplanes overhead is like.

Princess Juliana Airport in the Dutch part of the island of St. Maarten is one of the largest air hubs Caribbean region. Among the top ten dangerous airports peace. In the seventeenth century, the conquistadors laid siege for a long time, but were never able to take possession of the island, which was divided between the Netherlands and France according to the oldest treaty of 1648. By the way, the agreement still has de jure force. In 1942, an airfield was hastily built here, which is now international airport. Named after the Queen of the Netherlands, who visited here as Crown Princess in 1944, a year after the airport opened.

The runway is only 2,180 meters long - barely enough to large airliners. For heavy aircraft, such as a Boeing 747 or Airbus A340, this is not enough - but there are no other options for landing here. The pilots bring the plane to land directly above famous beach Maho Beach. That's why this place is so popular among plainspotters. Maho Beach - perfect place for a detailed look at low-flying aircraft. It’s hard to believe the authenticity of the pictures: giant airliners fly at an altitude of 10-20 meters above the vacationers. Despite the unusual take-off and landing conditions, not a single accident was recorded here.

Saint Martin Island is the smallest piece of land in the world with dual citizenship. The northern part is regulated by the French government, while the southern side is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. English language in use on both sides, Dutch is official language on the southern side, and French, respectively, on the northern half of the island. The island has two capitals - Marigot and Philipsburg. When they say Saint Martin, they mean French part islands, and St. Maarten (or Sint Maarten) is the Dutch part. There is also an airport on the French side of the island near Marigot, called Aéroport de Grand Case.

Terminal

The new four-story building offers all the services you need on the road. Air-conditioned premises, shops, pharmacies, ATMs, taxi and information counters. Wi-Fi is everywhere in the terminal.

You can land a plane at this unusual airport in the popular game - Microsoft flight simulator Flight Simulator X.B full version program this mission is called “Caribbean Landing”.

How to get there

Taxis drive tirelessly all over the island. Moving from the airport to the nearest city of Philipsburg will cost about $30.

Airport shuttles run throughout the island. They don't have numbers; the route is written on the bus itself. The island is small, any transport moves freely throughout the entire territory.

There are also hotel shuttles. Many hotels on the coast have their own shuttle service.

Saint Martin is the most unusual island in the Caribbean, there seems to be too much unique in this island, let’s start in order.

1. The island belongs to two countries at once, Northern part- France, southern - the Netherlands. But there are no borders on the island, there is only a symbolic pillar with which tourists take pictures. The French call the island "Saint Martin", the Dutch "Sint Maarten", sometimes we call it the island of Saint Martin. To get to the island you need a special visa, which can be obtained through visa centers two countries, you need to apply for a visa for the country where you will spend the most nights. The list of documents is no different from a regular Schengen visa, only the application form itself is slightly different.

2. Prostitution is legalized in Saint Martin, most of the brothels are located in Philipsburg, which is the capital of the southern part, where major port, where huge liners with tourists dock almost every day. Drugs are illegal, unlike in the Netherlands. The saleswoman in the supermarket was glad that we were from Russia, she said there are few Russians here, but there is one girl who works as a masseuse in the next building. I'm afraid to imagine what kind of massage she gives :)

3. The most unique airport in the world is also located here; we admit that many come to Saint Martin just because of it. The runway of Princess Juliana International Airport is famous for starting from Maho Beach, so planes land directly above the heads of tourists. Standing above a huge KLM Boeing is an extreme pleasure. The second entertainment is standing at the fence when planes take off, the main thing is to hold on tight :) I wrote about it earlier

4. Nice beaches. Everyone will really enjoy swimming on the island; the water is clear azure and there are no waves. I recommend Maho Beach with planes (in the season when there are no rocks) and the neighboring Mullet Bay Beach. In the French part nice beach is Orient Beach.

5. The entire island is a duty-free and Dute Free zone. Despite the fact that all the goods are imported (they only produce sauces), thanks to tax breaks, there are excellent supermarkets with decent names reasonable price. American beer, Brazilian couscous, Belgian ice cream, Canadian maple syrup and more. Prices for liter bottles of rum start at $6. We brought home something that is difficult to find in Perm, real Canadian maple syrup and so on. And what kind of Jamaican beer is there, because the island was an English colony, they brew incomparable ales!!!

6. Currency. The uniqueness is that on the island official currency on the Dutch side - guilders, but prices are also indicated in dollars, because most tourists are Americans. In the northern part, prices are indicated in euros, but you can also pay in dollars, and at the rate of 1 dollar = 1 euro :) Guilder exchange rate = 1.8 dollars. It is most profitable to travel to Saint Martin with American dollars.

7. Sunset bar & Grill. Returning to the topic of airplanes, the best way to see them is from a cafe on Maho Beach. Here good kitchen, and sometimes real Caribbean parties with live music. It’s fun when the next ship disembarks; absolutely all the tourists rush to this popular establishment. By the way, topless girls are serviced for free, topless boys are not serviced at all :)

8. Judging by the reviews, there are quite a lot of gay couples on the island of Saint Martin, who are guarded by a big black guy. They prefer secluded beaches, so be careful with your choice of swimming :)

Where to live?
The best area to live is Marina Simpson Bay. Firstly, close to the airport and Maho beaches with Mullet Bay. Secondly, good infrastructure. These are all steak and prime rib restaurants with live music. Good value hotel - around 100 dollars, the usual cost is 130-150 dollars per night. It is worth understanding that hotels usually do not include breakfast; the service is weaker than hotels in the Dominican Republic. Good hotel Sonesta Maho Beach overlooking Maho Beach and The Villas at Simpson Bay Resort& Marina. You can search for villas and apartments on the websites Abritel.fr and HomeAway.com homelidays Airbnb.com

View from our room window

The hotel is good, but those who are used to being licked, showing shows, animation, preparing food on an all-inclusive basis, making swans out of towels, etc. will be very disappointed. The rooms are luxurious, but there is no service.

What currency should I take with me?
It is most profitable to take American dollars with you. Large sums of money are not accepted in minibuses; it is best to take more small banknotes.
How to get around the island?

The whole island gets around in minibuses, you just have to raise your hand. There are a lot of rental companies, you can rent a Ford Mustang, a lot of beautiful American cars.

As with everything in the Caribbean, you have to be careful. There is a story on the Internet about how people were robbed right near the beach by stealing a rental car. It should be remembered that local population poor with all the ensuing consequences. At the same time, you shouldn’t see everyone as an enemy, local residents extremely positive and welcoming.

Beaches
The best beaches are located in the Dutch part of the island, for example, Mullet Bay. It is easy to find; if you are coming from the airport towards Maho, you should follow main road along the golf courses, then after the barrier the next turn towards the sea. Many minibuses go to this beach, if it is indicated on the sign, you can name it, and they will tell you when to get off.
The best beach is also called Maho beach; swimming under the planes is original. The main thing is that this does not happen during the off-season (for example, October-November), when instead of sand there are huge boulders on the beach. There are always a lot of people on Orient Beach, here active entertainment(water skiing, etc.), and on weekends there are parties in numerous restaurants. Not far from this beach is the small island of Pinel. Small boats can be used to cross

To find your beach, it is best to take a car and drive around them all :) The cost of sun loungers on the beaches of St. Maarten ranges from 8 to 15 dollars.

What else can you see in St. Maarten? In the French capital, in the city of Marigot, there is a market where you can buy spices and vanilla. And also have breakfast with croissants in French cafes

The only thing that is produced locally is hot sauces; everything else is imported. Seafood included. The cost of dinner is at European prices. For those who want to save money, it’s better to take rooms with a kitchen or apartments; supermarkets have excellent products, you won’t go to waste :)

We met the cheerful bartender Roger Lutz. who lives for two things: travel and cocktails. His dream is to open his own bartending school on the island. He thinks that the locals make crap cocktails (and that's true), his cocktails are incomparable. He lived for several years in countries such as South Africa, Iceland, Australia, and Japan. Like all Germans, he loves football, he supports Hamburg St. Pauli, this is a very interesting club, which is also supported by all antisocial sections of society (LGBTQ, hippies, punks, etc.), and he told how, standing on the fan stand, you can get drunk from smells of marijuana :) A cheerful guy who taught us how to make a real pina colada, we brought all the ingredients from the island, then every day we pampered ourselves at home with a wonderful cocktail. By the way, he told us that Bacardi is a garbage dump, any cheapest rum is better than Bacardi

Locals swear by lobster; the cost of dinner is quite at European prices.

It is not for nothing that the island has the unspoken status of being unique. Firstly, the territory of Saint Martin is peacefully divided between two states. Secondly, it is the smallest land on which two countries coexist on the planet. Thirdly, one of the most unusual airports the world is located right here. There are fifths, sevenths, tenths...

  • right above Maho beach, giant Boeings take off/land incredibly low;
  • the best beaches are Mullet Bay, Orient Beach and the same extreme Maho;

Tourists, despite two Euro-hosts, move freely throughout the island, freely crossing the conventional border-post. On a nudist beach, it’s easy to stumble upon a cooing gay couple, so homophobic travelers should avoid such places.

Nature of Saint Martin

The exotic charm of the Caribbean nature is fully revealed in Saint Martin, although the soil here is not very fertile. The territory is the rounded peak of a now inactive volcano. The entire perimeter of the island is surrounded by a scattering of picturesque coral plantations, which are easily accessible by swimming. The richness of the underwater kingdom will provide exciting diving and productive fishing (white and blue marlin, barracuda, wahoo, less often sea urchin, etc.).

Land-based chic is as good as underwater chic. On the miniature land there are palm trees, cacti, lush thickets of forests, and iridescent fields of cotton, vegetables, and reeds. Flower lovers are in ecstasy from the variety of buds, their aromas, shades, and sizes. The fauna is many times poorer than the flora and is represented mainly by feral livestock, birds and lizards.

The magnificent Saint Martin can be discovered every day, but never fully understood - the compact Caribbean island is so diverse. Ecotourists will certainly appreciate walks along Botanical Garden and a zoo, located on the Netherlands side. Also popular in the Dutch part of the island are excursions to nine churches, inspection of colonial-era buildings, the Monument to Her Majesty Wilhelmina, Forts Amsterdam and Willem, the Sint Maarten Museum, Dawn Beach, Cole Bay Hill Tower, Watney Square.

And the French possessions will not disappoint tourists eager for impressions, especially lovers of nightlife - this real paradise casinos, restaurants-bars, discos, beach parties, original music. The day can be devoted to visiting the elegant French buildings on the Rue de la République, going up to the ancient fortress of Saint-Louis, exploring the unique exhibitions at the Museum of Culture and History of Saint-Martin and the Loulou Gallery, taking pictures against the backdrop of the original building in which the Rue de la Court is located Liberte. Then run through the Marigot market, go to the Creole village of Colombier, take a tasting tour of the gastronomic capital of Grand Case, and relax your soul at the charming Butterfly Farm.

Here! I’ve been wanting to get here for a long time and “grab the plane by the tail.” This is not “photoshopped” - this is a real place. Cool!

Remember, we already discussed it...

There are quite a few things associated with the island of Saint Martin, located in the Caribbean Sea. interesting facts. Not only is he the smallest inhabited island in the world, it is also governed by two independent governments, France and the Netherlands, and at the same time! However, the main thing that St. is famous for is. Maarten, that when landing, the planes almost touch the beach and the tourists relaxing on it.

During the whole history Caribbean Islands , most of them were inhabited by Indians. St. Martin was no exception. Saint Martin's Island was the home of the Arawak Indians. Of course, as history says, the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus, but before European explorers reached St. Martin, Caribbean Indians attacked the island, capturing the local population, many of whom were killed. Most of the Arawak Indians were taken by the Caribbean as slaves. When Europeans arrived on the island, it was already under the control of aggressive Caribbean Indian warriors.

Columbus never visited Saint Martin Island, but history says that on November 11, 1493, Columbus saw the island and named it in honor of the feast of Saint Martin of Tours.

St. Martin, an island of 37 square miles, is the smallest landmass in the world, divided between two governments. Its dual owners are France and Holland.

And of course the island has two capitals, or administrative centers. This is Marigo - administrative center the French side, and the city of Philipsburg, the capital of the part of the island belonging to the Netherlands. The island will appeal to everyone. And for lovers of scuba diving, and those who like to travel on a yacht and those who just like to sunbathe. But we must remember that the rays of the Caribbean sun really burn the skin of the body, and therefore without sunscreen, doctors on the island strongly do not recommend sunbathing.

Also, if you are traveling to the island of St. Martin on vacation with children, then you need to carefully choose a beach, given that some of the island’s beaches are nudist. One of these official beaches is Cupecoy Beach, located on the Dutch side of St. Martin.

On the Dutch side, there are beautiful, long beaches with golden sand and green mountains, where you can sunbathe, play ball or Frisbee.

Down Beach is one of the best beaches, for scuba diving. Even when swimming not far from the shore, you can see beautiful exotic fish swimming calmly near the coral reefs.

Also, if a citizen arriving on the island has more than $11,000 with him, then he must report this to the customs service and fill out a declaration. If you intend to bring a dog or cat or any other animal with you to the island, then you must have a veterinarian’s certificate with you, no older than 6 months.

Saint Martin is located in the Atlantic time zone, which is equal to 4 hours Greenwich Mean Time (GMT-4).

Any foreigner wishing to work on St. Martin must have a work permit before arriving on the island. This must be organized by the employer wishing to employ a foreigner.

Princess Juliana Airport- one of the biggest transport hubs Caribbean region. It is among the ten most dangerous airports in the world. Located on the island of St. Martin. During World War II, an airfield was built on the island, which is now Princess Juliana International Airport. Takeoff/landing is of medium or high difficulty for the pilot, depending on weather conditions.

The end of the airport runway is located directly on seashore, close to Maho Beach, so that when approaching aircraft, they fly at an altitude of 10-20 meters above the heads of tourists relaxing on the beach beyond the end of the runway. The place is known as "Spotter's Paradise".

There is an international airport on the island. In 1942, during World War II, an airstrip was built on the island. In 1944, Crown Princess Juliana of the Netherlands visited the island and landed on this runway. A year later, the Dutch authorities opened a small airport on this site, which later grew into an international one.

Princess Juliana Airport, also known as Saint Martin International Airport, serves the Dutch part of the island of Saint Martin. In 2007, the airport served almost 1.7 million passengers and 104 thousand aircraft, which is its record to date.

The airport serves as the air hub for the Windward Islands and is the main gateway to the smaller Leeward Islands, including Anguilla, Saba, St. Bartholomew's Island and St. Eustatius Island.

Princess Juliana Airport is one of the most dangerous airports in the world, with high landing difficulties. It gained such fame due to the very low altitude when landing on the runway, and also because Maho Beach and the sea are practically adjacent to the runway. The History Channel ranked it as the 4th most dangerous airport in the world.

Despite the fact that Princess Juliana Airport has a high landing difficulty, two accidents have occurred here in its history. The first occurred on May 2, 1970, when McDonnell Douglas DC-9CF Flight 980 crashed into the sea near the beach. 22 people out of 57 died. The weather at that time did not allow landing the first time, the pilots decided to make several more attempts, but, alas, they ran out of fuel. Second - December 21, 1972 Air flight France De Havilland Canada Twin Otter took off from Guadeloupe but crashed into the sea on approach, killing all 11 passengers on board along with both pilots.

We can say that the island of St. Martin is more popular among photo tourists than among beach lovers. Almost everyone who comes to Princess Juliana Airport, after leaving the airport, does not go to the hotel, but goes straight to the beach to take a photo of themselves against the backdrop of a landing plane that flies overhead.

And here is the airport itself:

Saint Martin has only one airport, which annually receives tens of thousands of tourists from all over the world. The only feature of this airport is its short runway - only 2130 meters, which is not enough to land wide-body aircraft such as Boeing-747. The people of Saint Martin are certainly not happy about this fact, but somehow they need to welcome tourists.

So planes fly from Mainland in Saint Martin is literally over the heads of vacationers. The fact is that the territory of the airport named after. Princess Juliana begins just behind a thin strip of beach where locals and tourists lie under the scorching Caribbean sun. Some travel agencies They even offer special tours for those who want to view the huge area of the bottom of some Boeing while lying on the warm golden sand.
