It was built as a comprehensive enterprise for the construction and equipping of warships that were needed for the Crusades in which the Republic of Venice took part. The Arsenal had two entrances: for workers by land, the second entrance was at sea for ships. As you can understand, this complex in those days played a leading role in a prosperous power. According to historical assumptions (but not a fact), starting from the 8th century, shipyards were built in Venice, of which there were many in the city at that time. However, at the beginning of the 12th century, most of these shipyards were considered unsafe, after which in 1104 construction began on a single centralized Arsenal, which has survived to this day. Now, of course, everything looks different than in the old days. But the building nevertheless retained its solidity. And it is one of the most important and interesting places in modern Venice.

To understand how difficult it is to find the Venetian Arsenal on your own, just look at the map. Therefore, I recommend taking an excursion there to avoid difficulties in searching. But this is a personal matter...

For lovers of history and thrills, I highly recommend visiting the cemetery at "Island of the Dead" San Michele. To get there, go to the Fondamente Nuove pier. It is more convenient to get to the pier from the Campo dei Santi Apostoli church (located in the city center). From there, walk past the Gesuitti church to the embankment, then turn right and you will go straight to the desired pier. The entire journey will take approximately 10 minutes. Then buy a ticket at the box office and take any of the river buses that go to the islands of Murano or Burano, get off at the island of San Michele. It's already easy to navigate the island. When you arrive at the cemetery, near the church, take the diagram from the gatekeeper. The graves are marked on this diagram famous people, including famous Russian people. For many centuries, Murano glassblowers guarded the secrets of their craft, so this area is still like a city within a city: there are all the necessary buildings: palaces, churches, hotels, etc. But the most visited place is still the Glass Museum (recommended for viewing - very interesting). You can watch the entire process of transforming a drop of colored glass into a real “miracle”. Also, it is in the souvenir shops of Murano, according to local residents, that you can purchase products made from real Murano glass. Although for some reason they are much more expensive here. In souvenir shops in other areas of Venice (but not in the center) you can easily find the same products, but at a much lower price.

For contrast, take an excursion to another island of Venice - Burano island. There are no attractions as such here at all. There is only the Church of San Martino with a high inclined bell tower. There is also clean air and a great atmosphere, which Burano owes to the bright multi-colored facades of its houses. Add to this a small number of tourists, and you get complete relaxation. Oh yes. You can visit the lace museum (for amateurs).

Unfortunately, Venice - a dying city. Every year it gradually, but more and more, sinks under water. This means only one thing. And the hour is not far when Venice may completely disappear from the world map. Of course, this will not happen in a year or two, but still. So it's time to visit this amazing place you still have it.

Walking through the streets of Murano is also a great pleasure - there are various glass sculptures that can be viewed absolutely free of charge. In the workshops you can look at the technology for making small figures. Having paid a nominal fee of 10 euros for 3 people, we saw the making of a wonderful horse, which one of the tourists bought for 40 euros. Prices for handmade products are quite high; a swan figurine, 10 centimeters high, cost 30 euros, and a keychain in the shape of a candy costs 10 euros.

The next day we went to the island of Burano, the journey to which took a little more than 40 minutes. The population of this magical place does not exceed 5 thousand people. The island has long been famous for its unique handmade lace. According to legend, when fishermen went to sea, their wives went outside and wove wonderful lace in front of the house to brighten up their longing for their soulmate. Further, the idea spread among the entire female population of the island. Young girls wove themselves a veil, and it was believed that the more complex and unique the pattern, the more successful the marriage would be. In this way, the brides “weaved their destiny.” There are many legends associated with the handmade wonders of this place.

Handmade products are simply amazing - some of them take months of work, they look very fabulous and delicate. For a small napkin they ask for about 150-300 euros, and a tablecloth will cost more than 700 euros. Most of all I liked the woven children's dresses that were sold by some craftswomen. True, their price is sky-high - from 500 euros for a tiny product.

Real works of art are displayed in the store at the lace museum, near the pier. The magnificent napkins, pillowcases, and tablecloths are simply breathtaking. For wealthy tourists, there is plenty to choose from - duvet covers, handmade lamp shades, robes and even bath towels. A certificate of authenticity is issued for each product.

Lace is not the only thing that has made Burano famous throughout the world. The architecture of this place is different from others bright colors and unique appearance house facades. Small residential houses, which are located on all sides of the lagoon, are decorated with bright colors. From the outside it looks simply magnificent, as if you were in a fairy tale.
