About important historical milestones

The history of this hub is conventionally divided into two main points. The first is the date of its opening, the second is the reorganization in the form of an enterprise and obtaining the corresponding statuses, which were mentioned earlier.

Due to the outbreak of hostilities in World War II, the hub served as a military hub. Beginning in mid-July 1944, civil air travel resumed.

At the end of the war, it was decided to build a new air hub building. The construction process itself took place in 1949, and the building area is now used as a term for the arrival of passengers. Construction was finally completed in the fall of 1954.

The entire administrative staff was transferred to the new building; passenger service and related services were carried out here. The construction of the terminal area was carried out mainly by prisoners of war, and the main designers-architects were:

  • D. Burdin;
  • G. Yolkin.

The building itself is represented by 3 main buildings, where the 3rd floor is the central part with the arrival hall of zone A. In the two side parts, which also include the arrival halls of zones B and C, you can also see the flight schedule.

Online scoreboard of Vilnius airport:

The wraparound balcony is located on the second floor. The façade is decorated with arched niches with various sculptural elements. In the interior, both columns with ornaments and classical stucco molding have been perfectly preserved to this day. The building is classified as a cultural treasure of the country and is included in the appropriate register.

Almost since 1993, the building has been used as a terminal serving passengers. The airline actively cooperates with 25 major air carriers. This is facilitated by the equipment and capabilities of the air hub. IN this moment there are two runways with a length of 2.5 thousand meters and a width of 50 m.

The air pier is located 7 km from the center of the capital.

For 2018, namely, in the summer period from July to August inclusive, a suspension of activities is planned in connection with the reconstruction of the runway. The management of the air hub made this decision, citing the fact that the runway has been in service for 20 years and needs to be improved by replacing the coating, strengthening the base, improving the drainage system and installing new beacons. The estimated budget for these works is about 25 million euros. Negotiations are already underway with partner airlines to transfer flights to the city of Kaunas.

It is also planned to carry out work related to expanding the terminal area and updating baggage systems by 2020. It is possible that a multi-level parking lot will be built.

What to do if your flight is canceled

If a flight is canceled more than 24 hours before departure, passengers will be transferred to similar airline flights. The carrier bears the costs; the service is free for the passenger. If you are not satisfied with any of the options offered by the airline, most airlines can issue an “involuntary return.” Once confirmed by the airline, the money will be returned to your account. Sometimes this can take several weeks.

How to check in at the airport

Online check-in is available on most airline websites. Most often it opens 23 hours before the start of the flight. You can go through it no later than 1 hour before the plane departs.

To check in at the airport you will need:

    • identification document specified in the order,
    • birth certificate when flying with children,
    • printed itinerary receipt (optional).
  • What can you take on a plane?

Carry-on luggage is the items you will take with you into the cabin. Weight norm hand luggage can vary from 5 to 10 kg, and its size most often should not exceed the sum of three dimensions (length, width and height) from 115 to 203 cm (depending on the airline). A handbag is not considered hand luggage and is carried freely.

The bag you take with you on the plane should not contain knives, scissors, medicines, aerosols, or cosmetics. Alcohol from duty stores free can only be transported in sealed bags.

How to pay for luggage at the airport

If the weight of luggage exceeds the standards established by the airline (most often 20-23 kg), you need to pay for each kilogram of excess. In addition, many Russian and foreign airlines, as well as low-cost airlines, have tariffs that do not include free baggage allowance and must be paid separately as an additional service.

In this case, luggage must be checked in at the airport at a separate Drop-off check-in counter. If you are unable to print your boarding pass, you can obtain one at the airline's regular check-in counter, and check-in and check-in your luggage there.

Where to find out the arrival time if you are a greeter

You can find out the plane's arrival time on the airport's online board. The Tutu.ru website has an online display of the main Russian and foreign airports.

You can find out the exit number (gate) on the arrivals board at the airport. This number is located next to the incoming flight information.
