The M-4 Don highway is the result of the work of the GIPRODORNII Institute, which is engaged in scientific design research in the field of road construction. The construction of the road was carried out in the second half of the last century (from 1959 to 1966).

The route was classified as a road of the 3rd technical category, with parameters of 7 m wide and two lanes. Initially, the M-4 Don highway was not designed for heavy traffic.

Starting from the 80s, the need arose to create an additional section of the road in the Moscow region (Domodedovo area), and therefore a section of 18.4 km was built. On the eve of the new millennium, the expansion of the route continued. In just one year (from 1999 to 2000), the M-4 Don became 135 km longer (including due to regional highways in Moscow and Tula), and the number of lanes increased to four to eight.

Important! As a result, today the route smoothly turns into Lipetskaya Street in Moscow. Such transformations of the M-4 Don made it possible to reduce the traffic load on the Kashirskoye Highway section of the road, which is now used mostly as a bypass route for cars from other regions of the country.

The route was also distinguished by the fact that one of its bypass sections in the Lipetsk region (near the village of Khlevnoe), built back in 1998, subsequently became the first in the country to charge a toll for travel along it. And although the length of this road was only 20 km, it became the first on the list of toll roads in Russia.

Since the 2000s, large-scale construction aimed at developing the highway, creating roadways separated from each other, as well as intersections with other routes through the construction of multi-level highways, has continued to gain momentum. The night lighting system is being actively put into operation.

From 2009 to 2011, several bypass roads were built (the cities of Bogoroditsk, Efremov, Yelets, etc.), which made it possible to endure intensive traffic outside populated areas.

After control of the road passed to the state-owned company in 2010, it, together with partners (association of carriers, media) initiated a check of the condition of the route and the level of service on the road. As a result, it was found that half of the infrastructure did not meet the comfort requirements, and a third did not meet the legal standards. The history of the introduction of toll sections on the M-4 Don highway.

Reference! October 1999 - A Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation is issued regarding the establishment of the first toll section of the M-4 Don highway. The road surface itself and the infrastructure facilities around it were repaired: the road became wider and smoother, it was fully equipped with a lighting system at night; rest areas and express lanes began to comply with the provisions of the law.

A multi-level traffic interchange, which allows you to change to additional branches of the main road, was built at 461 km. A section of the bypass road between the settlements of Zadonsk and the village. Khlevnoye (from 417 to 464 km), which increased the total length of the route, became a toll road at the end of 2010.

In the spring of 2013, a general Toll Point (TCP) appeared. They installed it at 71 km of the route for a section of 20 km (from 51 to 71 km). Subsequently, this segment became 52 km longer.

In 2013, sections of the road from 225 to 260 km gradually became tolled; from 330.8 to 414.7 km and from 287 to 321 km - a bypass route is being created around the city of Efremov.

2015 – new sections of the highway appear, for which drivers must pay. After a major overhaul of the bypass road around Voronezh, the section from 492 to 517 km became tolled. In the same year, all car owners began to pay for travel along the section of the route from 544 to 633 km.

2016 brought new changes. Now it was impossible to drive for free along 93-211 km of the Moscow-Tula road, and another 571-544 km in the Voronezh region (a bypass section of the highway was built here around the villages of Novaya Usman and Rogachevka).
In the Rostov region, tolls on the M-4 Don highway (from 1091 to 1119 km) were introduced at the end of 2017.

Attention! All toll sections of the route are equipped with special systems for collecting money for travel: open or mixed type. The vast majority of areas use an open system, which means that the driver pays once when passing through the toll point.

He no longer pays (regardless of the time frame) if he only moves without leaving the boundaries of the paid zone. And only on the Lipetsk section of the road (414-464 km) a different payment system is used: here drivers pay for travel when crossing the toll point, but the validity of the payment is limited to 12 hours. If the car stays within the boundaries of the toll zone for longer, then the fee is paid again when leaving the territory. The length of stay in a paid area is determined on the basis of a check issued to the driver upon entry.

For convenience and safety of traffic, all toll sections are equipped with stationary facilities telephone communication, with the help of which, in the event of an emergency, you can contact emergency services.

On toll roads there is no system of traffic lights and adjacent side roads, and oncoming traffic flows are separated from each other. This allows drivers to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.

They are equipped with toll roads and an automatic control system, the functioning of which is ensured by the work of various technical equipment. means - video cameras, weather stations, etc. This allows you to quickly receive information about the situation on the road depending on the weather, lighting, and emergency situations.

Reference! The collected data makes it possible to quickly make decisions to eliminate any problems on the highway, with the involvement of the appropriate assistance services. Information important for ensuring normal traffic flow is posted for drivers on the road special. scoreboard

The establishment of tolls is under the jurisdiction of the Government of the Russian Federation, which acts on the basis of Article 36 of the Federal Law of November 8, 2007 N257-FZ.

The M4 Don highway is a strategic artery connecting the central part of the country with southern region. The road is equipped with 7 toll sections. Before your trip, you need to find out ways to bypass areas with traffic jams, the price of travel on toll roads, as well as alternative ways to bypass them.

The road, excluding the section near Losevo, has at least 4 lanes. IN Krasnodar region There are several kilometers of 3-lane highway. 7 main sites for this period is not the final number. It is planned to open several toll collection points in the Rostov region, with the Krasnodar Territory next in line.

Overview of toll areas

If some areas are equipped and have good conditions for travel, then sections in the Voronezh region, with incomprehensible payment points and poor quality of roads, cause confusion among motorists. As Avtodor says, each toll section has the ability to bypass on a toll road. Is this so, let's try to figure it out.

Moscow section from 21 to 93 km

This is the first section with a length of 72 km, starting immediately after the Moscow ring road and ending near the village of Sitne-Shchelkanovo.

One of the main routes to bypass this particular section is the Kashirskoye Highway and the exit to the highway is already at the end toll road. The disadvantage of this route is the heavy congestion of the route and traffic jams due to repair work.

Section of the route from 91 to 211 km

This period passes through 2 regions - Moscow and Tula. The end is near the village of Dedilovo.

The 119 km section of the highway also has several detour options. Having reached the village of Sitne - Shchelkanovo along Kashirka, at the fork in the road we turn towards the village of Stupino. Near the railway crossing we turn onto Pobeda Avenue and again go out onto Kashirka. We move on along it. At the village of Dedilovo you can again exit to the M4 and drive 14 km to the next toll booth.

Road section from 225 to 260 km

This road goes around the town of Bogoroditsk. Its length is 35 km. It starts from the village of Sukhanovka and ends at the village of Alekseevka. A detour is not a very good option, but when driving along the Kashirskoye Highway it is one of the main options. Along Kashirka we get to Zendikovo. Here at the fork we go to the Voronezh highway, or we continue along the previous path. The second path is longer, it is better to go along it in dry weather.

This section also includes the bypass of the city of Efremov. The toll section starts from 287 and goes to 322, the length is more than 34 km. This period begins at the village of Dry Rafts and goes to the village. Pushkari. Alternative paths some. You can continue driving along the Voronezh highway and Kashirskoye highway. But there is a route to bypass all of the listed areas, without winding along busy highways and streets. We present it below.

An alternative way to bypass the first 3 toll sections

On this route there are fewer resting places and motels with canteens. But on the expressway this route is even faster than the M4. This is Simferopol highway, M2 highway. The speed limit on the free highway is 110 km/h. Paradoxical but true. You can move along this route and bypass almost all toll sections, but it is better to get off on the M4 near the town of Yelets and then drive along the main highway.

Another plus is that there are no speed limits of 30–40 km/h as on alternative roads.

To get there, you need to exit the Moscow Ring Road at the M2 Highway Crimea sign or follow the sign for Simferopol. We pass Tula, turn onto Efremov, here we go onto the old highway and can go around Yelets, as well as a toll detour near Zadonsk. In front of Efremov there will be a traffic sign for a toll highway, an alternative. After the junction, turn right, cross the bridge and at the traffic police post, turn right onto an alternative section of the detour.

As a result, it turns out to pass, on a good road, at least 4 toll sections, increasing the length of the route to Yelets by 7 km.

A section of the bypass of Yelets, Lipetsk region.

The length of the route is more than 83 km, starts from 330, lasts up to 414 km. The beginning and end are located near two tracts. From Shumsky Verkh to Ozerki near Livenskaya. Here you can take a detour along the old M4 highway. But traffic jams often occur in Yelets on the bridge over the Don. But there is no better way to get around this detour, as well as the next piece. This road can take you to Voronezh.

Detour from Zadonsk and the village of Khlevnoye

The 50 km long road starts from 414 and ends at 464 km. You can move along the old Moscow highway after Yelets, along main road. We pass the city of Zadonsk, then several small villages follow one after another. There are terrible speed bumps here and a speed limit of 30 km/h almost along the entire route. Therefore, we recommend not to kill the suspension, but to pay and drive along the toll section with ease. Especially if you have a transponder.

Next, the payment points come almost one after another. If the Voronezh bypass is a new section with good coverage, then the road from 544 to 633 km, with a length of 89 km, is just a piece old highway with places with high ruts. In addition, further away there is a piece of road near the village of Losevo with constant traffic jams. Therefore, we advise you to bypass it immediately after Voronezh. In case of traffic jams, you can bypass the toll sections on Usman and Rogachevka by turning at the sign towards the urban settlement. Liski and, moving through Kamenka and the city of Rossosh. At the same time, the traffic jam is bypassed and the exit to the M4 occurs near the Rostov region.

Thus, you can bypass all toll sections of the DON highway, but the detour is not always the most the best option, especially on bad roads and with speed limits. It might be better to purchase a transponder for 1 thousand rubles, travel on a toll road, without queues, with a 20% discount.

Every time I return from traveling to the sea, I write about what the road was like, what condition the route is in this moment time, what has changed since the last time. I pay attention to gas stations, places to rest and have a snack, and hotels for an overnight stay. I will not change this tradition even now. Before moving on to the story about our vacation, I’ll show you how we drove along the M4 Don highway to the sea, and I’ll briefly tell you about the most important thing.
Our trip south by car took place in June 2016. All the way I collected receipts from gas stations, toll booths, cafes, etc. How much something costs, payment time... Such things are quickly forgotten. You won’t have time to get to your destination, you’ve already forgotten everything. After all, the main thing in a trip is not numbers, but emotions.
In this article I will show you M4 highway, I'll do it emphasis on toll sections (number, fare, location), I’ll tell you where we refueled, where we ate, where we spent the night. People ask me about this all the time. So it's relevant.

I’ll end the article with a story about hotels on the Don highway, where you can stay overnight on the way to the south. It is based on statistics of the most popular hotels among travelers, which I have as a Booking partner.
Here's the plan. So, let's go!
First, I will show our path in photographs. So I will introduce you to the track and its condition. You'll know what to expect. :)

Toll sections of the road on the M4 highway

I heard on TV that in August 2016, the next, eighth, toll section of the M4 highway opened. Judging by our experience, as of June 2016 there were already nine of them. In my “piggy bank” there are 7 checks + 1 check we forgot to take + 1 section we drove on a free road.
Yes, Kostya decided to be a researcher and find out what these free bypass roads are. Alternative, as they are called. I was categorically against it - there are a thousand kilometers ahead, I have no time for experiments. As a result, we only drove around the first toll section from Moscow. The detour is quite good. Although it is two-strip, the fabric is normal.

The road quality on this bypass section is normal.

The next time we left the road following the “free travel” sign, we immediately returned back - the normal road ended... Kostya didn’t want to experiment anymore, fortunately...

Total: at this point in time there are 10 toll sections on the M4. We passed at eight. We paid about 550 rubles.

Gas station on the M4

Still in Moscow We refueled at a Shell gas station (41 liters for 1,680 rubles). Gasoline turned out to be bad. The car constantly stalled. There was one more time during the entire 3.5 week trip when we refueled at Shell, and the problem was the same. Here's your favorite dressing...
The rest of the time on the way south we refueled at Lukoil, and everything was fine:

  • Gas station "Lukoil" at 720 km. in the Voronezh region 38 l. - 1,437 rub.
  • Gas station "Lukoil" in st. Kushchevskaya 28 l. - 1,119 rub.

The new Lukoil complex in Kushchevskaya (1145 km, on the right) consists of a hotel, shopping center, restaurant, service station and gas station.

In total, on the way to the south we refueled for 4,240 rubles. (I'm rounding). This gasoline was enough for us to get from Moscow to Anapa, drive there for a week and then get to Gelendzhik.
In Gelendzhik we refueled again at Lukoil (43 liters for 1,705 rubles). And the next time was in Sochi a week later...

Toilets on the M4

Along the route there are often brick toilets of the “hole in the floor” type - and free-standing ones, most often near bus stops public transport and in large recreation areas.

These toilets are mostly dirty. In order not to drag all this into the car later, I recommend choosing gas stations for sanitary stops. In any case, the toilets there are much cleaner, and you can wash your hands and drink coffee in a cafe.
If you are coming from Moscow, stop somewhere at a large gas station in the Moscow region (Shell, Gazpromneft, etc.). In the Tula region there is a huge problem with gas stations where there are toilets, and in the Lipetsk region, in general, too. Skip the Moscow region, then wait for the Voronezh region. By the way, the same applies to the return journey. Don’t count too much on the Tula and Lipetsk regions! On the forest too. This is the wrong route.

Where to eat on the M4

We have a tradition - we always stop at the new generation Lukoil gas station in the Voronezh region at 720 km. (there are gas stations on both sides of the highway!). These are not just gas stations - these are modern complexes with a cafe, toilets, a store, children's playgrounds (both indoors and outdoors) and so on.

Cafe "Meridian"

Hotels on the M4 highway

There are plenty of hotels on the M4 highway. These are simple motels for truckers, and more or less decent hotels. What can you advise those who haven’t thought about where to spend the night on the way to the sea? It's best to avoid cheap motels right next to the road. Choose hotels that are at least a little far from the highway and have a closed area. An example of such a hotel remote from the territory is the "Rose of the Winds" (almost on the border of the Voronezh and Rostov regions).

If you are not an extreme sports enthusiast by nature, book your hotel room in advance. Don't know what time you will arrive at your hotel? This doesn't matter at all. You know the day. Check-in - at any time of the day.

Analyzed booking statistics by city and hotel. Most often, the following cities and towns are chosen for an overnight stop on the way south (M4 highway):

  • Voronezh,
  • Millerovo,
  • Mines,
  • Red ear,
  • Kovalevka,
  • Aksai,
  • Rostov-on-Don,
  • Mayakovsky,
  • Kushchevskaya.

The choice depends on where people started from. It is more convenient for Muscovites to stay in Rostov and its neighborhood. For St. Petersburg residents - in Voronezh. Tula - in the Krasnodar region. There are, of course, personal preferences, but everything is individual.
Now the most popular hotels based on the results of May, June and July 2016. The list is very different from what I would recommend to you. I suspect that the majority of hotels are popular due to economic preferences (the same "Alfa" in Rostov) and a smaller part - due to comfort and coziness (for example, the Rodina Hotel in Mayakovsky). What to choose - decide for yourself.

We always stop overnight. We don’t take risks, we don’t strain ourselves. Driving without rest is not about us. It’s not about us to go into the unknown, looking for where to stop for the night along the way. We spend the night in pre-booked, verified hotels where relaxing holiday and good food.
We never force ourselves. We get up at a comfortable time and drive at a calm speed. And we enjoy the driving process. Yes, it's a long way. About 1,600 kilometers. But on a highway like the M4, it’s not at all scary. Great track God grant that there be more like this!

And Krasnodar. In general, today the condition of the M4 Don highway is good. Over the past ten years, it has changed significantly, and many of the problems that motorists complained about have been resolved. The situation on the M-4 highway is now generally favorable. The only downside is its large length.

Features and characteristics of the M-4 highway

The route stretches in the meridional direction from Moscow to Dzhubga ( Black Sea coast), and the last section - Dzhubga - Novorossiysk - runs along the sea in a northwestern direction. The total length of the route is 1540 kilometers.

The intensity of vehicle traffic on the M-4 is growing every year. In 2016, 68.7 million vehicles traveled along it. A year earlier there were 30 percent fewer of them. The increase in congestion on this highway can be explained by the increase in popularity Black Sea resorts V last years. Other (additional) reasons may be: growing motorization in the country and rising prices for passenger train tickets.

According to the European classification, the M-4 Don highway belongs to different areas. The section from Moscow to Krasnodar is listed as E 115. The section from Krasnodar to Dzhubga is marked with the code number E 592, and from Dzhubga to Novorossiysk - with the code number E 97. From Novoshakhtinsk to Pavlovskaya there is a section of the route E 50.

In and in some places in the south the route is listed as a highway, and in the rest of the territory - as a highway.

History of the route

Previously, the M-4 highway was called route No. 5 and connected Moscow and Rostov-on-Don. It was built in 1959-1967 as a third category road. It was 7 meters wide and had 2 traffic lanes. Part of the road line had already existed since the 2nd half of the 19th century.

It was introduced immediately after the collapse of the USSR. Then it was given the name M-4 "Don". Now this route is a kind of continuation of Lipetskaya Street in Moscow. Previously, it ran along the Old Kashirskoye Highway, but now this highway does not belong to the Don highway and is used for regional transport.

Active development of the M-4 highway has been carried out over the past 15 years. It now has divided lanes and difficult intersections with other highways, as well as bypasses in many cities. Part of the route is now toll. There are such sites in the Tula, Lipetsk and Moscow regions.

Reconstruction of certain sections of the road has been carried out in recent years. Today the condition of the M4 Don highway is good.

Features of traffic on the highway

"Don" is one of the most exploited in Russia. This is due to her geographical significance. A large number of both automobile and freight transport travel along the highway. In summer the traffic flow is especially dense. Vacationers go to the resorts of southern Russia and Crimea, and trucks transport agricultural products from the south. Traffic jams often form in the south of the Voronezh region, as well as near toll points in places where the highway is toll. This is especially true for the Moscow region.

Sometimes the weather becomes the movement. This often happens on passes. Krasnodar region, where in winter time Heavy snowfall and ice are typical. Less frequently, such problems arise in other areas. Sometimes transport is idle for several days. This was noted at the end of 2009 in the Rostov region - due to snowfall.

Another reason for traffic jams is the narrowing of the highway from four lanes to two.

State of the M4 Don highway today

The route passes through several areas. The highway begins in the Moscow region. There is a toll road here. The quality of the canvas here is good. From Moscow itself it has 8 lanes, and after Vidnoye - 6. After 71 km - from 4 to 6 lanes and very good quality road surface.

Next on the motorist’s route is the Lipetsk region. The highway is also mostly toll, there are 4 lanes, the quality of the road is excellent.

Next comes the Voronezh region. There are mainly 4 lanes, but on the section 632-700 km there are two, and traffic jams are common in this area. The quality of the canvas varies from poor to excellent. There are 6 lanes on the Voronezh bypass. This and one other section of the route are toll roads.

The next region is Rostov. The M-4 highway here has 4 lanes. The quality of the canvas up to Kamensk-Shakhtinsky is good, although there are some coating defects on the right side. South of Kamensk and up to Bataysk the road condition is not very good. This also applies to bridges and overpasses. Two areas are unfavorable: near Kamensk and near Bataysk. South of Bataysk, the quality of the road is good, but there is 1 unfavorable section (from the Open market).

In the Krasnodar Territory, the highway has from 4 to 6 lanes with good to excellent coverage. One section of the route is under reconstruction. South of the city Hot key and to Novorossiysk the road has a large number of dangerous sections. Basically it is two-lane. The situation on the M-4 highway in this section greatly depends on weather conditions.

Conclusion

Thus, we come to the conclusion that today the condition of the M4 Don highway is good.

The M4 Don highway consists of toll sections with at different prices travel All tariffs with prices are collected in this article and are relevant for today. The last reduction in prices for travel on toll sections of the Don highway occurred on October 1, 2018; in the future, the data will be kept up to date and changed in a timely manner.

In addition to the current tariffs, below are also visual maps of the sections of roads to which they apply. The information presented allows you to accurately determine the costs that will have to be included in the total cost of the trip to the south if you plan to go on vacation by car to Georgia, Crimea or to the resorts of the Krasnodar Territory, such as Sochi, Anapa and Gelendzhik.

Map of all toll areas and their detours

The presented "paper" version has a high resolution with zoom and more current information.

Even if you don't mind the current cost of toll roads, detours can still come in handy. The fact is that in the summer, due to the ongoing repair of roads and their periodic narrowing, in some places there are traffic jams on the M4, stretching for tens of kilometers. In this case, there are 3 options:

  1. Stand in a traffic jam for several hours and breathe exhaust fumes.
  2. Trying to avoid traffic on the side of the road or driving into a ditch in a neighboring field.
  3. Turn off in advance and calmly drive along secondary roads.
