Map of the Carpathians

Uzhgorod is the administrative center of the Transcarpathian region. It is located in the foothills of the Carpathians and is located on the banks of the Uzh River (see map of the Uzhgorod region).

Archaeological finds indicate that the first people inhabited these regions during the Early Paleolithic period, which is more than 100 thousand years BC.

Uzhgorod is one of the oldest settlements. It has a rich historical past that dates back more than 1,100 years. Hungarian chronicles indicate that the creation of Uzhgorod took place somewhere in 872. Tribes first settled here before the 9th century. Then Uzhgorod was called Ungvar. The population settled down, and the settlement grew into a powerful fortress.

In the 9th century, the fortified castle town was transformed into a protected city-settlement; over time, it became the center of the Slavic principality. It was headed by Prince Laborets. Its borders were close to the Great Moravian Principality and the Bulgarian Kingdom.

Chronicles of the 12th century mention that at the end of the 9th century, Hungarian tribes discovered the town and the castle. Having a good army, they took possession of the city. Some even adhere to the version that the toponym “Hungary” (Hungary) originates from the name of Uzhgorod - Ungvar. In 1241, it was destroyed by fires started by the Tatars of Batu.

Another city grew up in that place (Unguivar). This happened in 1248. Another fortification and a church next to it were erected here.

When the Counts of Drugeth came to power, they contributed to the development of the city as a trade and economic center. Then the castle structure was reconstructed, new churches and wine cellars were built. The “Seal of the City of Uzhgorod” has even been preserved from those times. 1675". The seal has an image of the coat of arms. On it we see a shield with two grape vines, and on them are three leaves and two bunches of grapes. This image indicates the main occupation of the townspeople.

Uzhgorod of the 18th century is known for its magnificent fairs. Merchants from nearby territories and countries came here. It was during this period that many new wine cellars. A little later, the poor population began to populate the left bank of Uzhgorod.

The economic growth of the region began at the beginning of the 19th century. The territory of the settlement expanded, factories were built, new residents settled, and the city’s own governors appeared. At the end of the century, a woodworking shop began to operate and a railroad opened.

It is difficult to underestimate the destructive power of the First World War, which undermined the cultural, economic and other spheres of life of the inhabitants. Having not returned to the rut of life after the previous war, the Second World War became a second blow.

Currently (since 1991) Uzhgorod is the least populated city among existing regional centers Ukraine.
