Finally found time to update the blog. This time we want to talk about winter holidays in Slovakia, where we in full force (with children 6 and 8 years old) spent an amazingly cool week in February 2017.

Last year we went skiing for the first time in Zakopane (Poland), so this winter we wanted to ski on them instead of on the ski lifts, which is what we mostly have to do during training.

Since we are not yet up to the red routes (and are unlikely to ever be), one of the main parameters when choosing a direction was the presence of a large number of blue routes.

The Low Tatras are well suited in this regard. Because tourists are waiting here:

  • 19 km - blue routes,
  • 18 km - red,
  • 7 km - black.

Below I’ll tell you more about all the blue slopes that you can ride on with the whole family.

Map of trails in Jasna in 2017

Trip planning

We have only one winter transport for now - a car. Because for a family of 4 people, this is much more economical than flying and renting a car on the spot. Of course, you can relax at ski resorts without wheels, but then you need to do it right on the slopes, and living there costs a lot of money. The two of you can still afford it, but with children you have to get out of it. We got to Slovakia for 14 hours of pure driving, with a couple of stops and arrived for lunch at 21:30.

Choosing housing

The next point is choosing a place to stay. We haven’t vacationed in cool hotels for a long time, since we can only afford to do this until our children are under 4 years old and we don’t have to pay extra for them. Initially we were planning to rent an apartment with a separate bedroom, but ended up in a private house :) Renting our house cost us 530 euros for 8 nights, but it had 8 beds, two toilets and one shower cabin. Great option for family travel!

As for the choice of housing, we can distinguish three zones of accommodation in the Jasna resort.

The most expensive zone- living on the slopes. We didn't even look at it. There are few hotels, no family rooms, and if there are, then everything is in one room for exorbitant money. But, if you don’t have a car and have money, then it’s quite possible to live right next to the ski lifts. Luckily you don't have anything to lose. There is absolutely nothing to do in Liptovsky Mikulas, and you can get to the Tatralandia water park by bus, which runs regularly throughout the day.

The second zone is located at the entrance to the mountain in the Demyanovskaya Valley (on the map locality Pavcina Lehota). Along the entire climb (about 10 km) there are hotels, apartments and guest houses. The choice is very large and, apparently, much more than what is offered. It may make sense to look on Airbnb, since there are more private traders there. The main advantage is the free skybus, which takes you to the slopes and brings you back. It is absolutely not necessary to have a car. You can eat either where you live or on the slopes. There is more than enough choice of places.

The disadvantages are obvious:

  • not cheap,
  • it is difficult to find large apartments at an adequate price,
  • There are no big stores, and private ones are tourist rackets.

And finally, the third zone is Liptovsky Mikulas. It’s a rather sprawling city with its own non-tourist life. But for tourists there are essentially only two points of interest: shopping mall Tesco and the Tatralandia water park, where you can regain the strength lost on the mountain slopes :) Housing prices in Liptovsky Mikulas are much lower than near the slope, because for the most part it is either private sector, or apartments. No hotels were spotted in the city, but they probably exist. We chose accommodation in Ilanovo, which is 4 minutes by car from the city center. With the money saved by being close to the slopes, you can buy sky passes and rent skis for the whole family.

In general, when choosing accommodation, you should not be afraid of distances on the map. There is also a shuttle from the city to the slopes, but without a car it will be hellishly inconvenient. In the city, I would recommend accommodation only with your own transport. Without it, it is better to settle in the second zone.

Skypasses

Let me start with the fact that I was initially unpleasantly surprised by the prices for Skypasses, which are much, much more expensive than in neighboring Poland. But it’s cheaper than in Austria or Italy. So there wasn't much choice. You can’t go to Bulgaria by car :)

It turned out that we didn’t know how to ski 🙂 Because when we saw the first real descent on the blue piste, we freaked out 🙂 Out of fear, everyone got into trouble and even managed to get a knee injury. The girls decided to go through all the difficult sections with skis in their hands, and the male half went down on skis with grief. As it turned out later, on the fifth route there are several sections that cannot be called steep. Something between the red and blue tracks. But the difficulty was rather in the traffic that reigned on the slopes on Sunday.

In short, we decided not to joke with the knee and decided that the adrenaline would be enough for the first time. We left our skis in the car and went to explore route No. 10. Seeing that there were many flat sections there, we were delighted and decided that we would only ride there.

Day two (mastery school)

On the second day we found out that there were other slopes. Since Travelina’s knee was in an acute condition, we decided to go to the track in Zavazna Poruba. Then we realized that we had to first come here and improve our skills, and then rush into the mountains.

In fact, there is quite a long, gentle training slope with the possibility of complicating it to any level. The best part is that prices for ski lifts are two times lower than in Jasna. As it turned out later, prices in the Low Tatras are artificially high, and small centers like this one work for locals.

The children had fun riding during the lesson, and dad tried to learn how to turn on a steeper slope (with varying degrees of success).

In short, the day flew by.

Day Three (Route No. 10)

We came to this track with confidence that we would conquer it. And so it happened... but only for children :) Parents were never able to complete the route without at least one fall.

The course is actually very easy with two difficult (for a green beginner) places. First you need to go through a 180 degree turn on the slope, and then turn 90 degrees onto a piece of the red track (10A). What adds to the difficulty is that by midday the track breaks up in difficult sections and you have to go around or crash into piles of snow that accumulate when the steep skiers slow down.

Day four (familiarity with route No. 13 and ascent to Chopok)

On the fourth day, we decided to check out the “devil’s dozen” track, but after two exits we realized that we had outgrown it and we were no longer interested in riding in a straight line. This route is good for training, but it is very popular and you always have to queue for a long time at the lift (10-15 minutes). On other lifts everything goes much more vigorously.

By the way, blue route No. 13 is the only one where evening skiing takes place in Jasna under artificial light. We simply didn’t have enough energy and time to experience what it was like for ourselves.

After some riding at training, it was decided to go on an assault on route No. 10, but the result remained the same. The children rode without falling and without fear, Travelina only managed one 180-degree turn, and I continued to fall at the junction with the red section :)

Having attacked enough, we decided to leave our skis in the car and climb to Chopok, from where a stunning view of the Low Tatras opens.

Day five (conquering route No. 5)

Having gained experience and shouting “Banzai”, I still managed to drag my family onto the “terrible” route No. 5. And, lo and behold! The first time everyone went down without any special incidents. At that moment we all realized that after all, we could now call ourselves a ski family and we could go skiing.

After a couple of training descents, we climbed to the upper section of this route, but there again came a “reinsurance” moment, because the beginning passes along a gentle part of the red slope. Having calmed down and exhaled, we all descended in single file and rolled to the very bottom, sometimes stopping to wait for each other and catch our breath.

If I were alone, I would definitely ski the full route. But I can understand the children who were a little scared in some places. Therefore more full route We didn’t skate, limiting ourselves to its lower part.

Top point of route 5

Day six (last)

The last day in the mountains we decided to ride all our routes, and for me personally it was important not to fall asleep on the “top ten”. Everything worked out! For the entire day, only 2 falls were recorded for the entire family.

They wanted to finish “family rides 2017” with a descent from the very beginning of the fifth route, but after 7 descents there was simply no strength left for another climb. And riding against a backdrop of fatigue and trembling legs is not a good idea.

Day seven (Demanovskaya cave)

On the last day we decided to see the main local attraction - Demanovskaya Cave. Completing it in a group takes a little over an hour. The impressions are very interesting, but I would not say that without visiting it you will miss something serious in your life (especially if you have already been to such caves). The children were interested, but objectively there was not enough language support in Russian or English.

Thank you! Very interesting and informative! We are going to Slovakia this year. Tell me, is it possible to rent ski suits there?
