Digor Gorge. Mountain Digoria. Geographical characteristics of the Digor Gorge

Photo: Alanya National Park

One of the most beautiful corners of the Caucasus is the Digor Gorge in North Ossetia. People come here to learn mountaineering. In addition to natural hits, there are castles-fortresses and ancient burial grounds. In these parts you can practice alpine skiing, water and cycling tourism.

Reserved Alanya

In North Ossetia there is historical region, which is called Digoria. It is located in the west of the republic, on the northern slope of the Main Caucasus Range. The area along the banks of the Urukh River has been inhabited since ancient times. It got its name from the ethnic group of Ossetians who called themselves Digorians. It is in these places that national park“Alania”. The Digor Gorge can be called one of his hits.

The protected area appeared in 1998. It includes not only beautiful mountain landscapes, but also man-made attractions - ancient human sites and battle towers. Since the entire area is surrounded mountain ranges, you can get here by one and only road. She walks along the valley of the Urukh River. Most high point Mount Wilpata is considered a reserve. Its height is 4646 meters.

A dense hydrographic network is formed by over 70 rivers and streams. The area is famous for its waterfalls. Some are over a hundred meters high! Digoria has many lakes of glacial origin with the purest water. The most famous include Fastagskoye, Mikelay, Gularskie and Donisarskie lakes. There are also those that appear in the summer when glaciers melt, and then disappear without a trace.

The climate in these parts is quite comfortable. It is determined by the mountains, which protect from the wind. Winter is mild. average temperature January is only -3.2°. Summer is long and not hot. The average July temperature is +20.4°. During this period, heavy rains and thunderstorms are possible. Precipitation in this area is mainly supplied by the Caspian Sea. The mild climate has attracted people here for a long time.

A visit to the past

In the valley of the Urukh River there are many historical monuments. The mountain village of Galiat is considered a man-made miracle. The houses here are built on flat mountain tops with steep cliffs. They are very reminiscent medieval castles in the mountainous part of Europe. On the territory of the Alanya National Park, small fortresses, crypts, towers and rocks with petroglyphs have been preserved. Entire mountain villages are under protection. In the Digor Gorge there is the famous “ City of dead" - Donifars.

In the villages of Matsuta, Dzinaga and Fasnal there are medieval above-ground crypts. They are towers. Alanian catacomb burial grounds are known in the village of Kumbulta. These burials are stone niches lined with cobblestones. In the village of Dunta, interesting are the cirt monuments that were installed in cemeteries. Some have well-preserved images of people and drawings. And the tallest residential, watchtowers and combat towers can be seen in the villages of Galiat, Makhchesk, Kamata and Uakats.

On the territory of the Alania Nature Reserve, many sanctuaries associated with pagan cults have been preserved. These include Lezgor, Sattai-obau, Gabon, Faron and others. The most famous sanctuary is Digori Izad. It is located in a rock grotto near the village of Zadalesk. Archaeologists have discovered aurochs, deer, bison and chamois, which people once sacrificed to the gods.

Among the remarkable natural sites of Digoria it is worth noting mineral springs. The water in them is completely clear and highly saturated with carbon dioxide. In fact, it is natural carbonation. IN national park there is even an alpine swamp! It sounds very unusual, because swamps are associated with lowlands. From beautiful places The Akhsinta Canyon should be noted. There is a bridge across it, which is nicknamed “Devil’s”. From the crossing there is a magnificent view of the Urukh River.

How to get there

By train or plane you should travel or fly to Vladikavkaz or Mineralnye Vody. From here minibuses go to the village of Chikola. Travel around Digoria usually begins from here.

The trip to the Digor Gorge had been planned for a long time, but on this particular day we weren’t going to go, we had completely different plans... But, probably, the stars aligned that way, and in the morning, over a cup of coffee, we decide - we’re going!
The weather was pleasant, a sunny autumn day + good mood and we were on our way.
I want to say right away that I didn’t like it - there are no signs to attractions, it was difficult to find where to eat (there are practically no cafes), and the lack of gas stations (you must take gasoline with you).
In the meantime, we are passing through Kabardino-Balkaria

We're going to Ossetia

We drive to Figator as our final destination, the village of Dzinaga. We have some little information along the route, but we didn’t think that the objects were not marked anywhere for tourists and we would have to look for them at random... and this is a waste of time (((.
We reach the tunnel, a little before reaching it, there is a turn to the right - this path leads to the Devil's Bridge, which spans the Urukh River.

The place is called Akhsinta Canyon, and if you drive across the bridge, the road will lead to the Didinag (flower) tract, to hay meadows. The height of the canyon is about 70 meters

We drive past the bronze monument to Uastrji. Its weight is 13 tons, height 6 meters + cliff 30 meters.

Not far from the monument there is a men's sanctuary, there is a legend about how it appeared -
Hundreds of years ago, a lone traveler was traveling along a narrow road. Suddenly the cart almost fell into a cliff, but miraculously the man remained alive, as if some unknown force prevented him from falling to the bottom of the ravine. In gratitude to Saint Uastirdzhi, this sanctuary was erected, which has already been renewed several times

And all around are mountains, sun and clean air!

The place where the great prayer festival takes place

On the opposite bank, high in the mountains, we see the remains of towers and decide to turn off. The turnoff is approximately five km away. from the tunnel and leads to the remains of the villages of Lezgir, Donifars, to the Satayi Obao crypt and to the necropolis.

Climbing upward, we come across an archaeological expedition that has been traveling to these places for about 20 years and is excavating the settlement of Saouar. On a plot of only 70 sq.m. A powerful production center has been discovered, including 5 pottery workshops, 2 metallurgical complexes for smelting ferrous metal and bronze, a bone-carving complex and a charcoal burner's workshop! The age of the village is 2-4 centuries. BC!
The guys had already preserved the excavations until next year and the most interesting things were already covered and packed, but we still clicked the camera as a souvenir

We rise even higher to the ruins of the village of Donifars

A little to the side is the village of Lezgor

Donifarsko-Lezgorsky necropolis

A little history. the village of Lezgor is one of the most ancient villages in mountainous Digoria; in 1886 there were 58 households in it. Residents abandoned it in 1927 after a mudflow, which brought many casualties and destruction. The village was part of Donifar society and an important strategic point. From here the attacks of the Digor feudal lords were repelled. Residents of Lezgor and other Donifar villages never submitted to the local nobility.
The village of Donifars is the only completely Muslim village in Ossetia.
Donifarsko-Lezgorsky necropolis - a large number of stone crypts and stone steles. It is not as famous as the city of the Dead in Dargavs, but is much larger in area and includes tombs different types. Presumably, burials were made from the 5th to the 18th centuries.

Above the village of Zadalessk, on the edge of the cliff, the Sedanovs’ tower is visible

Along the road Tsyrt is a roadside stone in memory of a deceased person

In front of the Dzinaga camp site, on a stone, is a rather tattered portrait of Stalin.

We pass the tourist center and enter the village of Dzinaga

In general, we have completed our plan, it is already three o’clock in the afternoon, and we are terribly hungry))). Unfortunately, there are no cafes; at the camp site we were told that vacationers cook for themselves, because... the season is closed...
And only after returning to the village of Matsuta, right before entering the reserve, we found a shop where we were fed delicious Ossetian pies of enormous size. A master class on making them was held for me, so I hope that on winter evenings we will eat Ossetian pies at home and remember sunny Ossetia)))

We didn’t see much, so there will be a goal to return...

After a 10-minute drive, the next stop is at the foot of Mount Daldzagati Kubus, along which another mountain village of Makhchesk is located.

The main local attraction is the Abisalovs' battle tower, about 30 meters high. These are certainly not the Great Pyramids of Giza, but you must agree that erecting a structure the size of a good 10-story building on a hill in the Middle Ages was not the easiest task.

This tower was built by the descendants of the famous warrior Badel, who came to Digoria from Madjar during the Golden Horde and, possessing a then outlandish firearms, hired to guard local residents from enemies. Later, however, Badel himself became a local feudal lord.

There are several more towers here. This is a new building.

Towers and crypts, the ruins of a Belgian plant built in 1893, and the Fasnalskaya State District Power Plant flash by.

Closer to noon, our minibus climbed to a 2-kilometer altitude and we drove into Kamunta - the highest mountain village in North Ossetia. The first settlements appeared here in the 13th century BC; now the population is 16 people. The village is located on a mountain, although in comparison with the mountains surrounding it, it is not a mountain, but rather a hill.

From here to the south the Tseysky ridge rises like a wall. This grandiose eight-kilometer wall, more than 4000 m high, bears a number of pointed peaks.

On the left is Tseykhoh hiding in the clouds, on the far right is the snow-covered beauty Wilpata, one of three highest peaks on the territory of North Ossetia, above it only Kazbek and.

Here it is Wilpata (4648 m.) on the right, on the left Songuti (4460 m.).

In the center is the eastern branch of the Songuti glacier, on the right is Ularg (4320 m), on the left is Oniani Peak (4200 m).

Tsey-Khokh (4260 m.) and Tur-Khokh (4110 m.)

Songutidon Gorge. There are still a lot of peaks and peaks here, I won’t even try to guess them))

At the bottom at the confluence of Songutidon and Dargon-Kom is the mountain village of Dunta.

And this is perhaps Sadonkhoh and Spartak-Tseysky

Along these roads you can get to the passes leading to the Tseyskoye Gorge.

The village is not located at the very top of the mountain; above the village there are still some ruins, perhaps the ruins of houses, or perhaps an ancient cemetery.

A communications complex was installed at the very top several years ago. The climb here is a little steep, but quite easy, but not everyone makes it to the top. In this light, I don’t understand people who travel for many hours to no one knows where, and then are afraid to tear off their butts, to move away from the minibus in order to enjoy all the beauties, but there is so much to enjoy!

In the east of the great Chinese wall stands the Kion chain of the Rocky Range, with heights up to 3.5 km above sea level.

Below on the slopes of the ridge is Galiat, or rather what remains of what was once the largest settlement in these places.

Even from here, from Kamunta, you can see how majestic the village once was. Today, surprisingly, several residential buildings remain among all these ruins.

In the west there is another ridge - Storfars, whose peaks are not so rocky.

There are also ruins here, this is Khonsar. If you look closely in the lower left corner you can see 2 crypts of the Kulaev family. Compared to them, the rest of the ruins look simply gigantic.

At the top, at the very edge, or rather even beyond the edge, a small rock stands alone, like a wall made of brick. This is Kuydzapparan - "Dog Rock".

From here, the person condemned to death was thrown down by close relatives; this was considered more humane than execution, and moreover, the presence of an executioner was not required.

It’s quite easy to get to the middle tier, although it’s already behind a cliff, you can climb to the top, but I didn’t try, I didn’t have much time.

Here the top just drops down. The edge of the cliff is so densely overgrown with grass that you have to approach very carefully, because... It’s not at all clear where the solid surface is and where the free flight zone is.

View to the north - Eastern Digoria in all its glory.

You can even see the tower in Makhchesk.

This is Uallagkom, Fasnal-Galiat Gorge.

When I first saw the sign "Wallagcom" I didn't really like the name. “UalLagKom” seemed very similar in spelling structure to “Gulag,” but no, these words have absolutely nothing in common with each other. Translated, Uallagcom means upper distant gorge.

After spending an hour in Kamunta, we head back. Before reaching Matsuta, we turn right into the mountains to make another stop in the village of Nizhny Zadalesk.

Here is the house-museum of Zadaleski Nana. During Tamerlane's campaign, she gathered orphaned children, took them from the deserted plains of Alanya to the mountains, and here, in Zadalesk, raised and educated the future of Digoria. According to local patterns, she is equated to a saint.

Urukh flows below, and above the river along a narrow cornice among the rocks there is a road carved along which cars drive.

Conditions for recreation in the Digor Gorge are varied. At different altitudes above sea level there are dry mountain steppes, wet forests, alpine meadows, forest-steppe zone, lakes, glaciers, streams, waterfalls.

There are opportunities for hiking ecological trails, you can get busy educational tourism, making excursions through different landscapes with their historical, cultural and architectural monuments, and engaging in water slalom.

Who needs to be closer to the benefits of civilization, perhaps it makes sense to consider

Currently, you can relax here mainly in the warm months. In winter, during the season of heavy snowfall, the recreation areas do not function, but the landscapes here at this time of year are beautiful in their own way, and it will be interesting to see these places also in the winter months.

This is just a small part of what is possible to visit and see in one of the wild gorges of the Caucasus.

Entry

When entering the Digor Gorge, the main thing is not to overshoot the Urukh Akhsinta Canyon (also called the Digor Gorge). There is a major road bridge there (in common parlance, Devil's). The bridge offers a stunning view - a height of 80 meters above the Urukh River, stop if you are not afraid. Akhsinta Canyon is the main entrance to mountain Digoria. Good asphalt is laid up to the village of Matsuta, but further on there is a dirt road.

There are many beautiful places here. Here and there are ancient buildings or ruins. It is clear that people have been living in these remote places for a long time. You can note the Three Sisters waterfalls, which look especially spectacular from afar. Three streams fall from the rocks at a distance of 150-200 meters from each other. The source of the waterfall is located on the Taymazi glacier. Therefore they official name"Taymazinsky waterfalls".

They produce unforgettable impression height of fall and beauty. Below, streams of water break against stepped stone pyramids. Over the years, water has carved out many depressions in the stones, which are a real decoration of each of the waterfalls. Water falls into these depressions and after a moment splashes out of them in fountains. Excellent route to the waterfalls walking trail. But the waterfalls freeze in the cold season.
