A stone path trampled to a shine leads to a most interesting object - a majestic grotto with overhanging blocks of rock. The acoustics inside are excellent, so Lev Sergeevich liked to organize festive dinners here with wine tastings and concerts of opera singers.

According to legend, Fyodor Chaliapin himself sang here, and his strong voice once broke a glass of wine. In this regard, the grotto is often called it. Chaliapin, and also Variety. Today you can see the recesses where bottles of champagne were stored, a stone well and the remains of a stage for celebrity performances.

Wonderful trip

Golitsyn's path and grotto - place extraordinary beauty, shrouded in secrets and interesting stories. Heading from the grotto to Cape Kapchik, you will walk along the Path of Unfaithful Wives - that’s what Muslims called this path in ancient times. The final destination of the route is the Through Grotto, which literally permeates the entire Cape Kapchik. Its length is 77 m, height – 20 m. Golitsyn equipped a hall here for receiving guests and holding ceremonial banquets. Currently, due to the danger of collapses, the entrance to the premises is closed by an iron door. At the end of the hike, tourists find themselves in a juniper grove. Centuries-old trees listed in the Red Book give a delightful aroma: the air is thoroughly saturated with phytoncides. It's so easy to breathe here!

Walks for singers and emperors in New World

Although the appearance of a mountain path, from where beautiful views open up and passing through unusual grottoes, is associated with the name of Prince L.S. Golitsyn, it existed before. Crimean Tatars they called it the road of the infidels. The prince made it easily passable, equipped it with stone stairs, observation platforms, and built storage facilities for his unique wines in the rocks, because he is the founder of the Winery in the New World.

Lev Sergeevich tried on the occasion of the imperial visit. While vacationing in Crimea in 1912, Nicholas II expressed a desire to visit a small village on his yacht “Standart”. The prince decided not only to treat the autocrat to wine (and the monarch knew a lot about drinking), but also to do it among the mountain beauties. For this purpose, the path that passed through one of the grottoes with stocks of aged champagne was strengthened and landscaped.

But not only the king was honored to walk here. Golitsyn had another favorite guest - Fyodor Chaliapin. He appreciated the beautiful views opening from here and the grottoes through which the path passes. The singer believed that the acoustics there were perfect. In 1927, the destruction severely damaged the Golitsyn Trail in the New World, but it remains passable without any equipment and attracts crowds of tourists every year.

Legends of the Golitsyn Trail

Like almost all historical places, the Golitsyn trail in the New World has long been overgrown with a mass of fairy tales and legends. Some guides who lead excursions here “in all seriousness” explain the origin of the original name “path of the infidels” with punishments for adultery. The Tatars themselves give a different explanation: there was a monastery in the mountains,
and along the path there were Christian pilgrims - “guiaurs”, “infidels” in Muslim terminology.

But most of the stories are told about the main rock cavity known as. Among other things, this fairy tale arose. At this point, the friends decided to play a joke on the prince, who boasted of his skills in determining the quality of champagne. Lev Sergeevich argued that when you open a bottle of a quality drink, the cork pops, but the wine does not splash, only white “smoke” appears.

On a hot day, the jokers thoroughly shook a bottle of champagne and invited the prince to evaluate the drink. Naturally, His Excellency not only bathed in wine himself, but also doused the wall of the grotto. And then it began to appear under the influence of wine medieval frescoes…. It is impossible to see them - it is claimed that time destroyed them. But it won’t hurt to remember the principle of quality control from Golitsyn!

Excursion along the Golitsyn trail

Interesting route starts literally from the village of Novy Svet itself. The Golitsyn trail climbs Mount Eagle, skirting the cape. Its total length is about 3 km. The main attraction on the way is the same Golitsyn grotto, where the champagne was aged and the prince himself popped the cork. It was dug into the stone by water, and in some places its height reaches 30 m. Its other name is Chaliapin’s grotto, since this was the place the singer preferred for informal concerts. He admired the acoustics, and the sound of the sea provided additional accompaniment.

Further, the trail leads to the cliffs of Mount Khoba-Kaya, where bizarre piles of rocks resemble some kind of fantastic kingdom. Some scientists believe that this stone labyrinth brands had a hand - ancient people of those who inhabited Crimea. When entering the path, it passes over an underwater cave, it is called “Legend”. There are no excursions here, but those who wish, armed with a flashlight and a strong rope, the end of which is held by a reliable friend on the shore, can try to examine it.

Almost the most amazing place- Through grotto. It owes its existence not to water, but to geological forces that displaced layers of limestone. Here they make the most beautiful photos on the Golitsyn path. The restless prince equipped the unique crevice with stairs to the sea and elegant forged doors. Prices for walking the Golitsyn Trail are a controversial issue. For now, tourists continue to be charged for walks without a guide, although on August 5, 2016, the environmental prosecutor’s office ruled that this is illegal.

How to get to the walking path?

People don’t go to the Golitsyn trail - they walk along it. It starts near the village bus station. The easiest way to get there is from, since minibuses go to the New World very often. You can also arrive by boat, including from Yalta and. For tourists vacationing directly in the New World, it is much easier to trust their own feet.

I would undoubtedly call the Golitsyn Trail in the resort village of Novy Svet one of the most interesting protected attractions foothills of Crimea. Carved out more than a hundred years ago on the northern slopes of Mount Koba-Kaya at an altitude of over thirty meters from the sea, today it is a picturesque walking route, for which no hiking experience is required, even families with small children can overcome it. I was attracted here by the stunningly beautiful landscapes, the clear blue sea, the majestic centuries-old mountains, and the fragrant smell of juniper.

We stopped in the New World on the road from Koktebel to Alushta; many people come while vacationing in Sudak.

Back in 1912, Prince Lev Golitsyn came up with this route to please Nicholas II, who planned a visit to Paradise - that was the name of the New World at that time. The Golitsyn trail was cut into the rocks in such a way as to demonstrate all the beauty of this place: rocks, bays, cape, juniper grove.

The Emperor liked this reception, and after tasting champagne wines, the production of which was also carried out by Prince Golitsyn, Nicholas II even said that life now seemed to him in a new light. They say that from that moment on the village was assigned modern name. Although, it seems to me that this is nothing more than a legend.

How to get to the Golitsyn trail

The Golitsyn trail can be accessed from two directions. From the western outskirts of Green Bay in the village of Novy Svet: if you look at the main beach of Novy Svet, you need to go to the right, focusing on the company store of the Novy Svet champagne wine factory.

The second option: go to the Golitsyn trail through a relict juniper grove; it is marked as such on the Yandex map.

Which option should you choose? The first option is more suitable for those who are vacationing in the village of Novy Svet. The second option, in my opinion, is more convenient for “visitors”. Firstly, you will be able to park or walk from the bus stop, and secondly, you will eventually get to the beach, the parking lot of pleasure boats, the factory, so you can continue your vacation in the New World.
The length of the route is small - only about five kilometers, and if desired, the path can easily be shortened; many tourists prefer, having reached the main attraction of the Golitsyn trail - the Chaliapin Grotto, to return back (if they choose the first option of entering the trail). As a result, several options for passing the trail emerged. The first is the longest - covering the entire distance: from the nondescript gate at the entrance to the very end - to the juniper grove, from where you can immediately go to the village of Novy Svet, or vice versa.

The second is the easiest, which I wrote about above - from the main entrance to the Golitsyn grotto and back.

And finally, the third option: take a boat and see the surroundings from the water. We haven’t tried this option, so I don’t know the details and options for stops along the way.

For me, walking the trail did not pose any physical challenges. Firstly, there is observation decks, where you can take a break and take colorful photographs, and secondly, the ascents and descents are not steep, some are even equipped with stairs hollowed out in the thickness of the stone, so I was not at all scared by the lack of railings and fences in some areas.

I would be much more worried about the scorching southern sun, since for most of the route there is absolutely nowhere to hide from it - don’t forget sunscreen, water and a cap. It's better to go in the morning or evening, as you'll get fried by lunchtime. I won’t even mention comfortable shoes. There is a beach along the way, so you can combine a walk with a swim.

What to see on the Golitsyn trail

The first on the list will be the one already mentioned by me Golitsyn's Grotto – iconic place And business card trails. This natural grotto of quite impressive size was carved here by sea waves many centuries ago.

It is believed that once upon a time there was a cave monastery on the site of the grotto, and at the beginning of the 20th century the enterprising Prince Golitsyn placed his wine library here, which is now reminiscent of the surviving works of engineering art - stone shelves in the form of arched niches, intended for storing bottles of champagne.
The excellent acoustics of the grotto prompted Golitsyn to install a stone stage here, on the stage of which famous singers of that time gave concerts. One of these performers was Fyodor Chaliapin, who allegedly broke a bottle of champagne with his powerful voice. There is no reliable data about this fact; many believe that Chaliapin was not on the Golitsyn path at all, but the grotto received his name.
I can’t ignore the most picturesque Blue or Robber Bay, located with east side from Cape Kapchik, almost in the center of the trail.

The bay is famous for the fact that such films as “Pirates of the 20th Century” and “Amphibian Man” were filmed on its shores. They say that next to this bay there is a very beautiful underwater cave, but there are practically no daredevils to go down into it. At the foot of the cape there is an unequipped beach; the entrance to the water is rocky, but many people swim.

The above-mentioned narrow and long coral cape Kapchik is another interesting object on the path. It reminds me of a sleeping dragon, whose head goes into the blue of the sea.

In the center there is a unique natural attraction - a long and deep through grotto. By order of Prince Golitsyn, stone stairs were cut into the grotto, allowing easy access to the sea, and a forged door was even installed at the entrance. Now, due to the constant movement of limestone rocks, there is a threat of collapse, and the grotto is closed to the public. So we pass the cape and move on.

The relict juniper grove is a balm for your lungs. There are benches here, you can relax under the shade of a tree and breathe deeply.

We walked at a waltz pace, taking short photo breaks, so we did it in a couple of hours. If you relax and swim, you can spend half a day on the Golitsyn trail. If possible, go to the trail at sunset along a short route so as not to be left here in complete darkness; however, some of the descents and ascents are not ideal.

But also in Crimea in general. Picturesque landscapes and fantastic views from the mountain tops can conquer any heart. We couldn’t resist either and decided to take a short excursion. Looking ahead, let's say that visiting the Golitsyn trail is definitely worth the time spent on it.

In general, the walk is not very long, only 3-4 kilometers, but you will have to walk through mountains and rocks, where at almost every corner you want to linger for a few minutes to admire the beauty of the surrounding nature, take a few photos, or just relax after a difficult climb. So our walk along the Golitsyn trail took us about half a day. And this despite the fact that we love to walk and are accustomed to various difficult roads.

What to take with you on a trip along the Golitsyn trail?

How to get to the Golitsyn trail?

In general, we have already discussed in great detail the beginning of the Golitsyn trail and Chaliapin’s grotto. We won’t waste time here, but will just briefly go over the main points.

Entrance on the Golitsin path paid, but is inexpensive (about 100 rubles). Early in the morning there are no guards and you can enter for free. The trail itself is quite different. There are both very convenient areas where steps are cut out and there are railings, as well as more difficult ones, although they are found quite rarely.

In the meantime, we are walking along the path and admiring the surrounding landscapes, let’s talk very briefly about history of this place. The history of the trail is very closely connected with history and begins in ancient times, when primitive tribes lived here. Then, in the Middle Ages, there were cave temples here. Unfortunately, the icons have not survived to this day, but back in the 1800s they were clearly visible.

And after 100 years, the history of the grotto begins anew. Prince Golitsyn decides to cut a convenient road to the grotto and orders a wine cellar to be placed here, combining it with concert hall. Then the path was cut into the rocks by Turkish workers, special viewing platforms were equipped, and a grotto was built. Many pop celebrities sang in it, and Fyodor Ivanovich Chaliapin even gave him his name.

Unfortunately, in 1927 the trail was very damaged by a powerful earthquake. They began to restore it only in 1980. But not as much of its former greatness remains as we would like. Now the Golitsyn trail is considered one of the most popular tourist routes New World and Crimea.

By the way, the Golitsyn trail is often called the path of fidelity. There is a section here (we, of course, will not walk along it) where the path goes at a slope of approximately 75-80 degrees, that is, almost vertical. They say that in ancient times a great king ruled here. He regularly went on military campaigns and brought new harems with him from each one. It was necessary to somehow get rid of the old concubines, and the king came up with a way: the tired wives had to walk along this path with a full jug of water on their heads. It was impossible to hold on to the stones or splash the water. It was believed that a girl who passed such a test was faithful to the king in his absence. They say that the bay below is one of the saltiest in Crimea - the result of bitter girlish tears.

My version of the legend about the Path of Fidelity

But for some reason I like it completely different legend. It is about a girl who has been waiting for her lover for many years. Protecting native land and his beloved, he was captured by cruel invaders. The brave knights promised to go and free the brave guy, and so they disappeared somewhere in distant countries for many months. And every day, morning and evening, she climbed the difficult path and peered into the boundless blue sea until her eyes hurt: what if a familiar sail appeared in the distance? What if her loved one returns home today?

The days turned into months, and those into years. Every day she continued to climb the difficult path. Once the first beauty in the village, she quickly grew old from hard work and inescapable melancholy. Her eyes dimmed and her skin lost its former tenderness. But still, just as resignedly, every day she climbed to the top of the rock and peered into the distance. And one day a miracle happened. With old, blinding eyes, she saw a familiar sail appearing over the horizon, ran up to the very top of the cliff and looked, looked, looked...

Her vision was once again as sharp as in her youth. She even managed to see him on the deck. He hasn't changed a bit. I just became a little haggard and lost weight, but that’s not scary, is it? Now she will never, ever let him go, she will feed him, warm him, take care of him...

If only you had seen how she ran to the pier. It seemed that even the fleet-footed wind could not overtake her today...

Fate really loves to give amazing gifts to those who deserve it... she came to the pier as young and beautiful as on the day they parted.

You will not find this legend anywhere else. To be honest, I just made it up. I don't like sad and scary stories.

The rocks on the Golitsyn trail are very different. Some are almost black, while others seem to be bleached by the sun.

Our goal is to get to Cape Kapchik. This is the cape that sticks out far into the sea and is connected to the mainland only by a narrow isthmus (it can be seen in the panorama above). There's a lot waiting for us along the way. beautiful scenery and panoramas.

On the way back we return from Cape Kapchik, but we turn not to the right (that’s where we came from), but to the left. This path is not only shorter, but also will take us straight to the city. The further road will be comfortable and pleasant, you will even find several benches to relax. We walked through the juniper grove with great pleasure. The smell there was indescribably delicious.

History of the Golitsyn Trail in the New World

The Golitsyn Trail is a legacy of the 20th century: it was built by Prince Lev Sergeevich Golitsyn in 1912 for the arrival of Nicholas II. He rightly decided that walking will allow the emperor to fully enjoy the beauty eastern Crimea, that’s why he ordered steps to be cut on the slope of Mount Koba-Kaya.

The estate of Prince Golitsyn was called Paradise. According to legend, it was Nicholas II who gave the village at the foot of the mountain a new name. After the walk, Lev Sergeevich invited the emperor to the table, where he treated him to champagne made from grapes grown on his estate. Nicholas II was so pleased with the drink that he said that he now sees everything in a new light. This is how the village received its current name!

Route of the Golitsyn trail

The Golitsyn trail in Crimea is carved on the cliffs of Mount Koba-Kaya - an ancient coral reef. The road immediately rises sharply, and the rocks hanging from above and the steep cliff just next to the path are breathtaking. But there is nothing to be afraid of: the stone parapet will not let you stumble. The higher you go, the more beautiful it looks resort village New World!

The first stop on the Golitsyn trail is the Chaliapin Grotto (also called the Variety Grotto or Golitsyn Grotto). This is a natural niche carved into the mountain by waves. The height of the grotto is about 30 m, the width is 17 m. This place has rich history: Back in the Middle Ages, there was a cave monastery here. Until the 19th century, the walls of the cave were decorated with frescoes, but they have not survived to this day. Prince Golitsyn ordered a wine library to be built in the grotto: stone arches remind of the stunning collection of the first Crimean winemaker. In the center of the cave there is a well with spring water, and in the deep center of the hall there is a stage where musicians gave performances and, according to legend, F.I. himself sang. Chaliapin! True, historians are still arguing whether the brilliant singer really visited the New World. That doesn’t stop the grotto and one of the streets in the village from bearing his name.

Next, the Golitsinskaya trail leads along the coast of the Blue Bay. It is also called Robbery, because pirate ships hid here during storms during the times of the ancient Hellenes. The path goes down to the very shore: the photo of the Golitsyn path shows that many travelers happily stop here to sunbathe and swim!

Further, the path passes along Cape Kapchik, which connects Razboinichya and Blue Bay. Here is also the Through Grotto - a 77-meter cave, laid along a tectonic fault. In this place you will be able to take unforgettable photos of the Golitsyn Trail - through the “view windows” you can see stunning views of the bays.

From Cape Kapchik there is a magnificent view of the Blue Bay and Tsarsky Beach - it was here that Nicholas II sunbathed. At this point the landscaped part of the Golitsyn trail ends. An excellent end to the walk would be to climb Cape Kapchik and return to the village through the juniper forest. The shady path and the amazing smell of trees, many of which are more than a hundred years old, will complement the excursion with its colors!
