They received them because they are in different parts islands. They have their own history and characteristics, which makes them special among other airport complexes.

Yuzhny Airport

South Airport on the map of Tenerife is an air terminal complex in the south of the island. It was opened in 1978, under the Queen of Spain - Sofia. The airport was first named after her - Reine Sofia. Over time, it began to be called simply Yuzhny, and the former name is no longer used.

Airports on the map of Tenerife.

At the end of the 60s the island's authorities came to the conclusion that it was necessary to build new airport. Los Rodeos - old - could no longer cope with its functions, as bad weather they prevented it there.

In 1977 The terminal building and the command and control tower were already ready.

All major flights land here, as do regular flights from all over the world.

There is one air terminal on the territory of the complex, which consists of three floors. It is large and comfortable. Tourist offices and ATMs, restaurants and bars - you will find everything here. From Tenerife airports, to Canary Islands, Southern is the main and primary one.

Yuzhny Airport.

From the capital of the island - Santa Cruz de Tenerife - it is located 60 km. Closer to it is the resort of Playa de Las Americas - it is 20 km away. The most convenient way to get to them from the airport is by taxi. The trip will cost you at 30-35 euros.

For 3-4 euros you can take buses that depart from there to Severny Airport or the capital. Travel time will be 40 minutes.

Severny Airport

If we talk about how many airports there are in Tenerife, then Northern is the second most important and with passenger turnover. The closest city to it is Santa Cruz. It is a hub for flights to Europe or South America.

Its other name is Los Rodeos. This is the oldest airfield on the island. It is infamous for being the site of the world's largest disaster. In 1977, in March, two Boeings collided in the fog on the runway. 583 people died then.

In 1972 there was another big disaster, which was considered the largest in Spain, until another one happened - in '77.

Other major disaster happened in 1980. Then, due to a pilot error, the 727 crashed, taking lives with it. 146 people.

Severny Airport.

In 2003 opened new terminal. This is a large building, 4 floors. There was also parking nearby. By 2006 passenger turnover exceeded 4 million.

Its runway reaches 3,170 m.

The northern airport on the map of Tenerife is indicated as Tenerife Norte. It accepts flights between the islands, to Spain and from America.

It is smaller in size than Yuzhny, but is also well equipped. Its location is what doesn't add to its popularity. Bad weather conditions add problems to pilots when landing or starting to take off.

Another reason why it is not very comfortable is that he doesn't work at night. Yes and During the day it is often closed.

In one terminal you will find everything you need - from ATMs to cafes. There is also free wireless Internet.

Other resorts can be reached by taxi or bus. Ticket price for the last one - from 2.45 to 9.70 euros. A taxi is better and more convenient, as it will get you to the hotel you need faster.
