Canary Islands - Lanzarote from A to Z: hotels, beaches, sea, entertainment and excursions. Canary Islands - Lanzarote from A to Z: hotels, beaches, sea, entertainment and excursions Volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua

The Canary Islands have long been rightfully considered a luxury holiday destination. The islands are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and consist of 7 large and several small islands.

Volcano Island

The fourth largest island of the Canary archipelago Lanzarote is called the "island of volcanoes". It is composed like a bizarre mosaic of unique multi-tiered caves, beaches, vineyard plantations, cacti and, of course, the sun. Scientists suggest that the island is approximately 15 million years old. It is the easternmost island of the Canary archipelago, located approximately 125 km from the coast of Africa and 1000 km from the Iberian Peninsula.

The island got its name from the Genoese merchant Lancelotto Malocello, who arrived on the island in the 14th century. The coastline of the island stretches for 213 km, of which 10 km are covered with sand, and the rest is a rocky coast. The beach is located at 16.5 km. Extravagant mountain ranges were formed after numerous eruptions and lava flows that spread along the slopes, giving them bizarre shapes.

The demon is the emblem of the island. This is explained by the fact that the first inhabitants of the island perceived the volcanic eruptions as the work of the devil. The largest recorded eruptions occurred between 1730 and 1736.

Over 2,053 days of eruptions, lava covered ¼ of the surface of the entire island, including the most fertile soil, and buried 11 villages. The island was virtually devoid of forest cover and only succulents and lichens managed to take root on Lanzarote. A drought that affected the island in 1768 and a lack of rain during the winter led to the emigration of the population to America and Cuba.

The next volcanic eruption occurred in 1824, but it was less destructive than the main one. But it also led to an exodus of the indigenous population. Today the island is home to about 140,000 inhabitants, 73.9% of whom are Spanish.

The flight to the Canary Islands is quite long and not every parent wants to tire out their kids. A good alternative is a holiday on mainland Spain. tells our review.

Capital of the island Arrecife owes its name to a mountain reef, which is why Aressife is translated from Spanish as “reef”. The streets of the city reflect the unique maritime character and literally breathe history.

The first mention of Arrecife dates back to the 15th century, when this city was still a small fishing settlement. Black volcanic reefs, behind which the boats were hidden, protected the fishermen from sudden pirate attacks. In the 16th century the settlement began to actively grow, and the first church was erected on its territory, dedicated to the first bishop of San Ginés.

The city became the capital in 1852 and major industries such as tourism and agriculture are actively developing on its territory.

In Arrecife there is the city beach of Reducto, the castle of San Jose, built in the 17th century. and which today houses a collection of modern art, as well as the Castle of San Gabriel.

The tallest building on the entire island – Gran Hotel Arrecife located in the city next to the harbour. The city has several shopping centers and a main street shopping district.

Of course, it is not the capital of the island that is attractive to tourists, but resort centers:

  • Costa Teguise;
  • Puerto del Carmen, in the suburbs of which the resort village of Puerto Calero is located;
  • A new tourist center in the south is Playa Blanca.

PUERTO DEL CARMEN

The tourist center is located on the southeastern coast of the island and stretches along the ocean for 7 km.

You can get to Puero del Carmen from the airport by bus. The Arrecife Bus company provides regular transport services.
The ticket price is insignificant - approximately 1.50 €.

You can also use the services of a competing company, Bono Bus, whose travel to the oldest resort will cost €1.20.

By purchasing Bono Bus magnetic cards, you will be able to save 20% on travel.

Taxis are available for visitors. The fare depends on the time of day. So from 6:00 to 22:00 you can get to Puerto del Carmen for approximately 15 €, from 22:00 to 6:00 – for 18 €.

In just 20 years, the once small resort village has turned into a resort town, welcoming 30,000 tourists annually. A significant part of the city is occupied by natural spacious sandy beaches.

Beaches of Puerto del Carmen

Playa Grande or Playa Blanca

Ideal for family holidays with children, since it is covered with golden sand, there are no winds, the ocean waters are calm and the shore is flat. Its length is 900m, maximum width is 100m. The beach offers rental of umbrellas and sun loungers, showers and a wide range of water activities.

Playa de los Pocillos

The golden sand beach is located just above ocean level, so the tides leave small “lakes”. Previously, sea salt was extracted here using the old method of evaporation in the sun.

This is the longest and widest beach of the resort. Its length is 1,600m, maximum width is 170m (at low tides it can reach 200m). Due to the winds, it is not so attractive for families with children. On its territory there is a rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, showers, but there are no water activities here.

Playa Matagorda

The beach, covered with golden sand, gradually starts from Playa de los Pocillos and ends at the Beatriz Playa hotel. It is also windy, its length is 1,000m, and its maximum width is 60m. Umbrellas, sun loungers and showers are provided for vacationers. There are no water activities.

Playa Fariones and Playa Chica

They are not intended for beach lovers, as entry into the water here is hampered by rocks. But this is a favorite place for divers. There is a diving center that trains mainly beginner divers. The length of the beach is 140m, width is 25m. The beach, covered with light sand and stones, does not have sun loungers with umbrellas or water activities, but the shower works properly.

Attractions, entertainment and shopping in Puerto del Carmen

The resort area has many restaurants, including fish restaurants, offering exquisite Canarian cuisine, bars that entertain visitors every evening with simple show programs, discos and casinos. The port offers exciting boat trips or fishing in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Around the harbor is the “Old Town”, which has retained the atmosphere of a fishing village.

In the evening, tourists stroll along Avenida de las Playas, the main thoroughfare of the resort. There are many small retail outlets here, offering mainly beach products and souvenirs.

But the resort town also has more significant stores, as well as branded boutiques of Diesel, Lacoste, etc. The largest new shopping center on the entire island, Biosfera Plaza, is located in Puerto del Carmen.

In the evening you can visit the Music Hall Tavern - an eccentric cabaret with a vulgar but funny program. The bulk of visitors are tourists from Foggy Albion.

In the second half of May, international triathlon competitions are held annually in Puerto del Carmen. The marching athletes arriving on the island to compete in cross-country, cycling and swimming are solemnly greeted by numerous spectators on Avenida de las Playas. An important sporting event is covered in all local media.

At the end of July, Fiesta de Carmen is celebrated on a large scale - a holiday honoring the city's heavenly patroness. The city is festively decorated with garlands, colorful streamers, flags and balls.

The fun lasts until the morning, introducing numerous tourists to traditional folklore performances, dances and other entertainment. For this holiday, fishing boats are festively decorated so that at the climax they go out into the ocean in a long line. At the end of the holiday, city residents pray for good catches next year.

Puerto del Carmen Hotels

There are few hotels in the vast resort area. Mostly apartments are offered, of which there are over 200.

  • ClubHotel Riu Paraiso Lanzarote.

Among the 3-star hotels you can stay in:

COSTA TEGUISE

Second most important tourist center located in the east of the island.

From Lanzarote Airport you can get to the resort in just 15 minutes by bus (ticket price 1.15 €, travel by Bono Bus costs 0.92 €) or taxi (from 6.00 to 22.00 - 20 €, from 22.00 to 6.00 – 24€).

The resort has no history of turning a fishing village into a beautiful town. It was created artificially on an uninhabited stretch of coast about 40 years ago. The coast is always windy, so Costa Teguise has become a favorite place for windsurfers and kiters.

Beaches of Costa Teguise

There are 5 beaches in Costa Teguise:

Las Cucharas

In Spanish, the name translates to “spoons.” The length of the beach, covered with fine light sand, is 700 m, width – 60 m. On the beach, guests can rent umbrellas and sun loungers, and shower.

There are no water activities, so for the experience of walking on the ocean and catching exotic fish, you will have to go to nearby Puerto del Carmen or its suburb - Puerto Calero. The beach is favored by windsurfers, as the moderate wind never stops blowing.

But near the Melia Salinas hotel the wind is calmer, so the waves are calmer, and on the wider beach beach lovers are already basking in the sun.

Playa de los Charcos

Windy beach with fine light sand. Entry into the ocean waters is difficult due to rocks. But the beach, 310m long and 30m wide, is protected from waves. There are water activities, umbrellas with sun loungers and showers.

El Jabillo

The length of the rocky beach in some places is 180m, width – 20m. The waves here are low. The Grand Teguise Playa Hotel is located next to the beach. There is no entertainment or shower here, only sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent.

Playa Bastian

It differs from the others in having darker sand. There are few vacationers here, since entry into the ocean is difficult due to the rocky descent. The length of the western beach is 300m, its maximum width is 35m.

Playa Ancla

A small, cute and cozy beach with a length of 120 m and a width of 30 m, visited mainly by guests of nearby hotels. There are no water activities, showers or even rental of umbrellas and sun loungers. Nearby is the residence of the King of Spain.

Sights and activities of Costa Teguise

The center of Costa Teguise is concentrated around Pueblo Marinero, a decorative fishing village designed by Cesar Manrique. Also, according to Manrique’s design, ordered by King Hussein of Jordan, one of the four residences of the King of Spain, La Mareta, was built. It was given by Hussein to the Spanish King Juan Carlos as a wedding gift.

La Mareta is a rather modest building, on the territory of which there is a helipad. The residence is carefully guarded, and curious tourists are not allowed access here.

Costva Teguise has numerous bars and restaurants, and once a week on Fridays there is a market where they sell clothes, cheap jewelry and souvenirs. Those interested can take specially organized flights from Costa Teguise to the huge market in the city of Teguise, which takes place on Sundays.

At the market you can buy original handmade souvenirs folk craftsmen. After shopping in the administrative capital of the coast, you can stroll around the city - the old capital of the island with a centuries-old history.

The settlement was named Teguise in honor of the daughter of the last native king who lived in the 15th century. One of the streets of the city is called “Bloody” in memory of the events when most of the inhabitants were brutally killed in one of the many pirate raids.

Also, the fortress on Mount Castillo de Santa Barbara is named after its owner, who was canonized for the fact that, without giving the pirates the place of refuge of her servants, she accepted martyrdom. She is the patroness of the city, and Spanish Catholics always commemorate her day in churches.

Among the interesting objects is the Spinoza Palace, which was originally the residence of the Governor General, and then passed to later owners - merchants from Genoa.

The palace now operates as a museum, and its richly decorated interior impresses visitors. It is also worth visiting one of the oldest churches in the Canary Islands, the Church of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, and then strolling along the stone-paved streets with numerous attractions.

– plan your vacation time correctly to get maximum pleasure on vacation.

About Canarian cuisine with an abundance of the freshest seafood and vegetables.

The most popular resort in Tenerife is Playa de las Americas. We talk about the history of the resort, hotels, beaches, shopping and entertainment.

But there is still a lot of entertainment in the Costa Teguise resort itself. This and a wonderful course for golf fans, which became the first on the entire island of Lanzarote.

This and an aquarium that attracts visitors with a glass tunnel with sharks and 33 separate aquariums, the last of which is an almost didactic visual of how human waste pollutes the ocean. Filled with a variety of garbage, it makes people think about a more careful attitude towards nature.

The largest aquarium with a volume of 400,000 liters allows you to scuba dive Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 to 14:00, swim with a 2-meter cat shark and with other inhabitants of the ocean.

Experienced instructors provide detailed instructions, and the dive itself takes 20 minutes. The pleasure is not cheap - approximately 130 €.

For those who did not find enough water activities in Costa Teguise, you can go to Aquapark Costa Teguise.

There is entertainment for visitors of all ages, but the organizers especially focused on entertainment for children.

So, in Zona Infantil - “Children's Zone” you can frolic on the huge inflatable “Castle of Games” (Castillo de Juegos) and have fun sliding down colorful slides of a wide variety of colors and shapes in El lago infantil - “Lake for Children”.

"Children's Park" (Ocio Infantil) is painted with all kinds of funny caricatures and is equipped with an innumerable number of trampolines.

Adults can compete in car races at the 8 sendas (“8 tracks”) attraction, appreciate the steep turns of the Turbolancha diapositiva tubular high-speed tube, and extreme sports enthusiasts can feel the rush of adrenaline into the blood after descending from the Kamikaze slide.

The water park is open year-round from 10:00 to 18:00, but it is not recommended for children to visit in winter, since the pools are not equipped with water heating systems. Entrance is free for children under 2 years old, tickets for children under 12 years old will cost 16 €, adults – 22.5 €.

Beaches of Playa Blanca

Near the new elegant and promising resort are Playas de Papagayo – the most beautiful wild beaches of the island. Picturesque landscapes around bays with emerald water and light, fine-grained sand attract local residents from all over the island.

Playas de Papagayo is a chain of beaches under such names as Playa del Congrio, Playa del Pozo (closest to Playa Blanca), Playa de Papagayo, Playa de la Cera, etc.

If fate has given you the opportunity to come on holiday to Lanzarote, then you should definitely visit the north of the island, where a special microclimate has developed that has turned the area into the greenest place on the island – the Valley of a Thousand Palm Groves.

The Grove has unique fire palms with leaves resembling flames, as well as beautiful tropical plants. In the crater of the volcano there are two grottoes, the cave of Los Jameos del Agua and de Los Verdes.

Worked in Jameo del Agua again great master Cesar Manrique, building steps into the cave and places for visitors from the remains of lava. The rest of the interior is decorated with cacti and green ferns, creating a fantastic setting for the place.

Tourists also visit La Geria, where they are given the opportunity to taste sweet wines produced from grapes that grow in fields with solidified lava.
Only in the Canary Islands is it possible taste real malvasia.

The sun and sandy beaches, the whisper of the Atlantic Ocean and the fresh sea breeze create a unique holiday in Lanzarote and encourage you to return to the island again...

Attractions Lanzarote

The island itself is an attraction. As a result of numerous lava eruptions, it is completely devoid of plant life, but three hundred volcanic peaks and colored fields of solidified lava make such a strong impression that you can be sure that you will not forget this place in your entire life.

You can fully enjoy these views in the Timanfaya National Reserve, which is located in the western part of the island.

A must-see is the Cueva de los Verdes cave. Formed as a result of an eruption and having a depth of 6 km, it is a unique natural monument. And in one of its halls there is a concert hall - the natural acoustics amaze the imagination of visitors.

Attractions Lanzarote

In the western part of the island is the main attraction - the Timanfaya National Park (Parque nacional de Timanfaya). Its unusual landscapes delight every visitor. A must-see on the program is a visit to the unique El Diablo restaurant, which is located at the top of an active volcano, where delicious dishes are prepared on a volcanic grill.

Lake Charco de los Clicos

South of the village of El Golfo there is an amazing lake of an unnatural acid green color - Charco de los Clicos. Like frozen waves, it is surrounded by bizarre rocks. On the black pebble beach there are tourists keen on searching for an olive-green semi-precious stone - olivine (peridot).

Volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua

The Jameos del Agua volcanic cave complex is an extraordinary landscape that consists of underground passages and grottoes. This complex has become an excursion site thanks to the initiative of the artist Cesar Manrique. The first cave with a luxurious tropical garden and an artificial pond is called Jameo Grande. A little further on is Jameos del Agua, a concert cave with unique acoustics and the entrance to a crater called Jameo de la Cazuela. The unique atmosphere of Lanzarote is radically different from the tropical paradise that reigns on other islands of the Canary archipelago. Its volcanic landscapes evoke strong associations of being on another planet or in a fantasy world inhabited by unknown inhabitants. And the majority Lanzarote attractions only enhance the initial impressions.
The most famous place on the island is Timanfaya - a national park that amazes tourists with lunar-Martian landscapes and an incredible number of volcanoes located in a small area. Few people will be indifferent to lunch in a restaurant above the crater of the volcano and the fire show put on for visitors. The legacy of long-standing eruptions are the inimitable galleries of the underground caves of Los Verdes and Jameos, the bizarre shapes of which frighten and fascinate. The skill of the legendary architect Cesar Manrique turned one of them into a unique natural-architectural complex with an artificial lagoon and an underground concert hall. No less interesting are the master’s other creations: the Mirador del Rio observation deck, a luxurious cactus garden and the architect’s former house, harmoniously integrated into the volcanic landscape.
