Girona Airport (Aeroport de Girona - Costa Brava) (IATA GRO, ICAO: LEGE) - international Airport in northeastern Catalonia (Spain) 12 km from the city of Girona. At the time of writing, a visit to this airport was only in plans. Now we have been to Girone twice already. The first time in August 2009, on a flight from Bremen, the second time in April and May 2012, on flights from Tallinn. If I'm not mistaken, this is our eighth Ryanair airport and the tenth in Europe overall.
Girona Airport goes by different names, which can lead to confusion, especially when booking flights. In Spanish it is spelled Girona, but in Catalan it is written Gerona, so the names are used interchangeably. There are also other options, for example, Ryanair calls the airport Barcelona-Girona Airport. While other airlines call it Gerona-Costa Brava or Girona-Costa Brava.
The airport was built in 1965 and had a runway measuring 2,200 by 45 meters, as well as parking for nine medium-sized aircraft. Later, a power plant, a control tower and a weather station were built, as well as a one-story passenger terminal with an area of 2,600 square meters. m. On the airfield itself, a taxiway appeared, parallel to the runway.
It was classified first as administrative, that is, as local. In 1969, the aircraft parking area was further expanded and the taxiway was lengthened. In the same year, due to an increase in traffic volumes, construction of a new terminal began. In 1975, work began to expand and adapt the runway to accommodate large jet aircraft. In the early seventies, the number of charter flights initially increased sharply, but since 1978 most of them have been transferred to Barcelona Airport. This led to a decrease in air travel, especially after 1983.
Everything changed dramatically in the early 2000s, when Ryanair decided to make Girona Airport one of its hubs. This led to a sharp increase in passenger traffic. Over the next six years after the arrival of Ryanair, the number of passengers carried increased more than 10 times. Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport) is used by Ryanair for flights to Barcelona, as it is 92 km away north of the city. Barcelona can be reached directly by bus or taxi, or by train from railway station city of Girona.
Departure from Girona (Barcelona-Girona Airport)
Registration for internal and international flights is carried out on the lower level of the passenger terminal building, where 18 check-in counters are located. The airport terminal is not very large in size and is not difficult to navigate. Ryanair is the airport's flagship carrier and its check-in counters are visible from afar. The only caveat is that the electronic board does not indicate the boarding gate number, only the check-in counter.
Our flight (May 11, 2012) from Barcelona-Girona Airport to Tallinn was early (departure at 6.55) so the check-in area was relatively empty. To check luggage and hand luggage Check-in counters 1-4 are used for weight, on the left side of the terminal. There is no registration at these counters, but only electronic scales.
The visa-check procedure, mandatory for Russians, is carried out in a separate window on the right side of the terminal, next to check-in counter number 18.
After visa-check and baggage check-in, you need to go up the escalator to the next level of the terminal, where the checkpoints ("feel") are located before entering the departure area. Here you need to remember that the line to the security check area begins literally right behind the escalator. If you have free time before departure, it is more convenient to carry it out at the lower level of the terminal.
On the upper level from the escalator to the security check area there is only a queue of departing passengers, and you can sit behind the security check area, but there are not many places. Only one dutik was seen, and it was small. The number of the required (and let me remind you there are 10 or 12) gate for boarding appears on the board only 15-20 minutes before departure. If you go through the inspection too early, then there is nothing to do at the top and you constantly need to monitor the electronic scoreboard. We didn’t have such a problem, since the flight was early, we barely had time to go through all the procedures when boarding was announced. They didn’t even go into the dyutik.
At Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport) there was no weight check of hand luggage, but each (!!!) bag or suitcase was checked for size through the counter before being allowed to board. Let me remind you that if the size of hand luggage exceeds 55x35x25, i.e. If your suitcase or bag does not fit into the rack, you will have to pay for your luggage at a greatly (!) inflated rate, and even have to carry it to the plane yourself.
Arrival to Girona (Barcelona-Girona Airport)
Arriving at Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport) is simple and straightforward. The terminal is not big and everything happens very quickly.
Regardless of the flight, passengers arrive on the 0th floor of the passenger terminal building, where two baggage claim halls are located. Hall-1 serves domestic flights, flights from the UK and Ireland, as well as from countries included in the Schengen agreement. Our second visit (April 27, 2012) to Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport) was calculated taking into account car rental. The car was ordered in advance from the website of Ryanair, which in turn cooperates with HERTZ. The HERTZ office, like the offices of other renta-car companies, is located in the arrivals hall, visible literally immediately as you enter the terminal.
We had a booking voucher in hand and the entire registration procedure took literally a matter of minutes. To receive a car, the HERTZ Agent needs to present your license (we had international ones), a voucher and a bank card. A contract and car keys are given to you. At the time of booking, the cost of the rental, the cost of a tank of gasoline and the amount assigned for returning the car to a location other than where it was issued are debited from the account.
I will give the financial result of renting a car from HERTZ at Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport) - Barcelona. Renting an Opel Astra class car from HERTZ through Ryanair for two weeks cost €259.0. The amount charged for fuel is calculated as a full tank at a very inhumane price. In fact, instead of the Astra, we got a diesel Opel Meriva and for fuel we were charged 54 liters at €2.55. The amount for a return is not there - €17.70.
Even before the trip, having received a rental voucher from HERTZ and carefully read it, we were surprised to find that the declared cost of renting a car did not include CDW and TP insurance (analogous to our CASCO). We decided that we would talk about this on the spot, when we received the car at Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport)-Barcelona. The result of the negotiations on the spot surprised us even more - it turned out that for some unknown reason, it was impossible to pay for insurance on the spot, canceling the reserve and placing a new order was also impossible... Well, what was completely surprising was that the car was given to us without insurance. And no franchise blocks.
As a result, after returning the money written off for a tank of fuel, renting an Opel Meriva car for 14 days at the Girona-Girona Airport-Barcelona cost us only the same €259.0, i.e. less than twenty euros per day. And taking into account the fact that there was another person traveling with us and he compensated for 1/3 of the costs of both renting a car and gasoline, everything turned out very humanely. By the way, the refund of the written-off funds occurred quickly, no later than a week after the return of the car. What else can I say? Just one thing - fly Ryanair and use HERTZ services.
The cars of renta-car companies are waiting for their owners in a separate parking lot; to get there you need to go through a regular parking lot located closer to the passenger terminal of Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport). However, the HERTZ agent who registers the car will kindly tell you where to go.
Now a few words about returning the car. First, there are NO refueling stations in the area adjacent to Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport). You need to take care of replenishing the fuel tank in advance; the nearest REPSOL gas station is located on the N-II highway about five kilometers before the turn to the airport, in the direction of travel from Girona.
The second relates to HERTZ and perhaps to the time defined as "off season". More specifically, at the beginning of May 2012, the acceptance of the car at Barcelona-Girona Airport (Barcelona-Girona Airport) is carried out by a specially trained person who arrives at 11:00 a.m. (11:00 a.m.). How to get to and from Girona Airport

The trip will last 1 hour 10 minutes and departure times vary depending on flight arrivals. A round-trip ticket will cost 25 euros and can be purchased at the airport ticket office.
There are others bus routes from the airport: to Costa Bravo, Northern Costa Bravo and Girona. The last one takes only 25 minutes. A bus runs six times a day to Perpignan in France. From Girona airport it is also convenient to reach resort towns, such as Lloret de Mar, L'Estartit or Blanes. The border with France can be reached in 40 minutes from here, so the hub can serve as a point of arrival for tourists heading to the ski resorts of the Pyrenees or Andorra. The air hub is located near three major highways that lead in different directions.
Hotels and other facilities in the area of Girona Airport
At a distance of 2 to 5 kilometers from the air hub you can find restaurants, supermarkets, gas stations and car services. There are also hotels here, the prices of which are quite affordable. There is a hotel of its own at the airport and it is called Hotel Vilobi Park. You can spend a night here for 75-90 euros. The staff speaks English, but be patient and be prepared to communicate using gestures.
Other accommodation options: hotels, inns or small boarding houses are located at a distance of 1.5 kilometers or more from the air hub. Compact and convenient
The Costa Brava Airport building is two-level. On the first one there are check-in counters, on the second one there is a departure area. On small area there is everything - counters of travel agencies, offices of car rental companies, a first-aid post, bank branches, a VIP room.
You can drink coffee, snack on fresh buns and specialty pastries, or have a hearty meal at the 24-hour Caffriccio cafe, McDonald's and Subway (from 5 am to 11 am).

There are two duty-free shops at the airport terminal- Aldeasa with traditional alcoholic drinks, perfumes, cosmetics, jewelry and clothing and Divers with local goods, food and souvenirs.

Where we go?
From Girona-Costa Brava there are direct bus routes to Barcelona, Figueres, Blanes, Lloret de Mar, Tossa, Pineda, Calella, Perpignan (France) and Andorra.
There are two companies operating in the region - Sagales (Barcelona Bus) and Sarbus (Sarfa Bus). All stops are located next to the terminal, and there are signs with schedules there.

To Girona
To the city bus station every hour from 5:30 to 23:30 the bus is coming № 607 (one way ticket - 2.75, round trip - 5.25 euros, travel time - 29 minutes).
A trip on Sarfa Bus will be faster (15-20 minutes) and cheaper- 2.15, round trip - 4.1 euros. They depart from Palamos and call at Aeroport Girona at 01:15, 5:45, 09:15, 11:15, 16:45 and 8:45.

From the bus station or train station of Girona (they share one building on Placa d’Espanya) it is also convenient to get to Barcelona and the coastal towns.
To the train station and Barcelona airport
You can get to Barcelona at intervals of 1-1.5 hours by bus number 604 (Barcelona Bus). The first departs at 8:45, the last at 18:30, there are 2 flights at night - at 23:45 and at 0:15.

From the airport you can reach most coastal cities without transfers:

To Andorra
From Girona Costa Brava Airport to Andorra la Vella the road is shorter than from Barcelona. Novatel buses depart at 10:00 and 20:00 (journey time - 3 hours 30 minutes, ticket - 34 euros).

To Salou
You can only get to Salou by public transport with a transfer in Barcelona.

Direct buses from BUS Plana depart from morning to midnight with a 1-hour break to the resort of Salou from the second terminal. They do not go to the bus station, but make several stops near the metro stations Passeig de Gràcia 36, Maria Cristina, Palau Real. Duration of the trip - 1 hour 55 minutes, distance - 110 km, ticket - 14.95 euros.

The smartest thing to do is to go by train - from Barcelona Sants station they run at hourly intervals. It will be more convenient and faster - 1 hour 20 minutes, tickets - from 8.8 to 19.8 euros.

What is better - taxi or transfer?
It is customary to order a taxi in Spain by phone. If the trip is long, you will have to discuss the cost of waiting, tariff, return fee, and not every driver will agree to go, for example, from Tossa de Mar to Costa Brava airport.

Girona Airport is 103 km (64.2 miles) northeast of Barcelona, or 1 hour 20 minutes by train from Barcelona city centre.
Some low cost airlines mention Barcelona in the description of Girona airport to let you know that when you fly into such small airports, you will have the opportunity to get to your final destination - Barcelona.

Barcelona Bus
The Barcelona Bus is probably the most convenient way to transfer between Girona Airport and Barcelona city centre. The bus belongs to an independent company not directly related to Ryan Air. However, the Barcelona Bus schedule is designed in such a way that it coincides with the RyanAir flight schedule.
If you are relying on Barcelona Bus for transfer to Girona airport in time for departure, do not forget that Barcelona Bus and Ryan Air are different companies. Additional information on this issue.
The bus stops right outside the airport and will take you to Estació d" Autobusos Barcelona Nord(Barcelona main bus station) in the center of Barcelona. There you can change to metro to get to your desired location. The closest metro station to the bus station is metro Arc de Triomf (Red Line, L1). You will have to leave through the exit Sortida Napols. The metro station is located just 5 - 10 minutes walk from the bus station.
