Sights of Siem Reap. Siem reap cambodia travel vacation tourism. Introduction to Khmer culture

With the development of tourism, a tourist infrastructure began to be created in Siem Reap. Today the city has hotels of various levels and price categories, and 6 km from Siem Reap is located international Airport, the largest in Cambodia.
I visited Cambodia and Siem Reap with my wife in 2011, the country left a very vivid impression.

How to get to Siem Reap

To buy an air ticket at the best price, it is best to use air ticket search systems that include greatest number airlines and ticketing agencies.

How to get to Siem Reap from Phnom Penh (Phnom Penh)

Getting from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is not difficult. The easiest way to do this is by bus; travel time is about 6 hours. Phnom Penh does not have a single carrier to Siem Reap; many companies perform this function. You can buy bus tickets to Siem Reap at hotels and guest houses or travel agencies.
There is also an option along the Tonle Sap River, but it is less convenient, but more romantic.

How to get to Siem Reap from Thailand

Many travelers and tourists, while in Thailand, combine a visit to this country with a trip to Cambodia. In most cases, people enter Siem Reap from Pattaya and Bangkok.

How to get to Siem Reap from Bangkok
1.Air flight, in principle you can fly for around $100. The flight time is about an hour, well, add the road to the airport and you have to be at the airport 2 hours before departure.
2.Taxi prices start at about 3,000 baht and the journey takes about 4 hours.
3. Bus tickets can be bought, for example, on Khao San Road, at any of the travel agencies, of which there are a lot. Alternatively, you can take a government bus from Mo Chit station. Buses depart every half hour, tickets are sold on the ground floor of the station (inside the building) in booth No. 23. The fare is 212 baht. (subject to change).
Road from the border to Siem Reap
From Thailand you will be taken to the border town on the Thai side of Aranyaprathet, on the Cambodian side there will be the city of Poipet. From Aranyaprathet to the Cambodian border you can take a tuk-tuk, the price is about 100-150 baht. There is also a shuttle bus going to the border with the inscription “free”, in quotes. All they need from you, just like tuk-tukers, but they will also take money from you, is to take you to agencies that issue a visa for a certain fee. After passing the checkpoint, you will be “put” on a free bus, which will take you to the bus terminal, from where you will travel the last 160 km to Siem Reap for about $10.
There is an option get from the border to Siem Reap by taxi, the price in 2013 was $30-35, but you'll have to bargain hard.

How to get from Pattaya to Siem Reap
Here are three main ways to do this.
1. By taxi - the easiest way and the most expensive.
2.Order a transfer from a Pattaya travel agency. The price is approximately 500 baht for 2011. Travel time is 3-4 hours. In my opinion, this is the best way: price, comfort and effort. A minibus picks you up directly from your hotel.
3. By bus, which departs from the bus station on North Road near Sukhumvit Road. Bus passing from Bangkok ticket price 250 baht. The ticket can be purchased in advance. The bus takes you to the town of Aranyaprathet, bordering Cambodia.
Personally, I ordered a transfer from an agency where a Russian guy worked and he gave us the whole schedule of how and where to go at the border.

We got to Siem Reap from Pattaya by ordering a transfer from one of the travel agencies. On the way we were taken to this cafe. where they offer to obtain a visa to Cambodia “without problems,” but the price is several times higher. In fact, there are no special problems when obtaining a visa at the Cambodian border.

How to get to Siem Reap from Vietnam

Siem Reap can be reached by plane from the main cities of Vietnam without transfers. While in Ho Chi Minh City, you can also get to Siem Reap by bus, the journey will take 12-14 hours. Most likely there will be two transfers at the Vietnam-Cambodia border and in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh. Tickets can be purchased from Ho Chi Minh City travel agencies.

Attractions, things to see and do in Siem Reap

The main attraction of Siem Reap, of course, is Angkor, which is located 6 km from the city itself.

In addition to Angkor, the city has a number of other places worth visiting.
Siem Reap has several interesting temples, which Buddhists call Wat.
is a large and very beautiful temple, which is located almost in the center of Siem Reap.

On the walls at Wat Preah Prom Rath are paintings depicting the life of Buddha.

Reclining Buddha statue at Wat Preah Prom Rath.

This is one of the oldest and most revered temples in the city; paintings from the 19th century have been preserved on its walls.

Wat Bo is one of the oldest and most revered temples in the city. The wat was created in the 18th century and has 19th century paintings on its walls.

12 km. from Siem Reap on a mountain 140 meters high there are ancient ruins of a temple built by Yashovaraman I around the 10th century.

Staircase to Prosat Phnom Kraom.

Ruins of Phnom Krom

Next to the ruins there is a very picturesque small Buddhist temple, and from the mountain itself there are beautiful views of the entire area.

Phnom Kraom Mountain offers views of the entire area.

On Phnom Kraom, you can order a table with champagne or something stronger, which will sit right on the grass, and you will watch the sunset in such a romantic atmosphere.

Angkor National Museum The museum tells the history of Khmer culture and civilization. The museum is very modern and interactive, it has eight halls, each dedicated to a different topic. Opening hours: daily from 8:30 to 18:00. Entrance fee is $12.

Cambodia Cultural Village In this theme park-museum, you can get acquainted with the life and life of numerous peoples of Campoja since ancient times. In fact, there are 11 villages in the park belonging to individual cultures living in the Kingdom of Cambodia. In each of the villages you can watch traditional performances, including wedding ceremonies, acrobatic and dance shows, elephant shows, as well as the traditional Apsara dance. There's even a museum here wax figures, telling about historical events and famous personalities, from ancient times to the present. On the territory of the village there is traditional restaurant. The opening hours of the cultural village are from 9:00 to 21:00. Admission is $11, free for children.

War Museum (Siem Reap War Museum) On the Road from Siem Reap to the airport there is a military museum. Under open air Large exhibits are on display - tanks, helicopters, airplanes, many of which are already overgrown with grass and are not in very good condition. Some of the equipment was most likely moved here after it was hit. Entry to the museum costs $3.

Crocodile farm. Just like in Siem Reap itself you can buy products from crocodile skin, only an order of magnitude more expensive. Sellers explain this by guaranteeing that they do not have counterfeits.

Apart from a souvenir shop and enclosures with crocodiles, there is nothing else on the farm.

Siem Reap hotels where to stay

Today in Siem Reap there is a large selection of accommodation, for every taste and budget, from 5 to 200 $ per night. To choose a hotel or guest house in the city, it is better to use hotel search systems, which include the largest number of booking agencies. You can use the hotel search form on the website; it includes more than 100 hotel reservation systems, including well-known leaders in this segment booking.com and agoda.com. Before booking a hotel, check its location and what amenities are available.

And in this hotel we lived in a room for two with all amenities, for only $7 per night.

A coconut tree grew right in front of our window.

Transport

In Siem Reap public transport, as such, there is no such thing. Transport is provided in the form of tuk-tuks and taxis. As elsewhere in Asia, you should bargain, the price can really be reduced several times. A trip within the city will cost 0.5-1 dollar. Most places in the city itself are not difficult to reach on foot, since the city is not big at all. Many hotels rent bicycles from $1 to $5 per day, and some are even free. But don't forget about the heat; if you go cycling, take enough water with you.
For sightseeing it is better to rent vehicle for a day or several days. In 2011, I hired a driver in a Japanese car with air conditioning for 3 days and he took us not only to the sights, but also everywhere we wanted, for $95 (for some reason he didn’t bargain). Later I learned that renting a car with a driver for the whole day starts from $25.

Let's be honest with each other and with Cambodia: if there were no such powerful attraction of Siem Reap as Angkor, no one would know about this town. But although for inspection ancient capital One day is enough; many tourists stay in Siem Reap for a longer period. And so that they would not die of boredom, the Khmers quickly invented new attractions in Siem Reap. Many of them are very worthy of attention.
What to do in Siem Reap: attractions and excursions

Yes, I was also very surprised when I found out that the attractions of Siem Reap exist))) Moreover, you can easily find what to do in Siem Reap if you have a day free from visiting Angkor. Or even two. And our article will help you with this.

Siem Reap attractions: what to see and do

The good thing about Siem Reap’s attractions is that you can get to them all quickly and for just $1. Well, or a maximum of two - this is the tariff of local taxi drivers. And in general, prices in Siem Reap are quite low.

The downside is that many of the attractions of Siem Reap are, so to speak, somewhat exaggerated and made in a hurry just to get your money. Therefore, out of all the options for what to do and see in Siem Reap, we have selected seven of the most interesting. But before moving on to their description, we advise you to read our other useful articles about Cambodia:

So, entertainment and attractions of Siem Reap: where to go in a city where there is nowhere to go?

1. Pottery master class

    official site

If you don’t know what to do in Siem Reap, be sure to take a master class at the ceramics school! And you will take with you not only pleasant memories, but also pleasant crafts.

2. Khmer Circus

There are no clowns or trained dogs here. The circus in Siem Reap is more of a theater where acrobats, jugglers and other circus artists will show you scenes from Khmer myths and legends, as well as from the life of ordinary people. Performances start every day at 19:30, adult tickets start from $18, children's tickets start from $10.

  • Khmer Circus in Siem Reap, official site

3. Cooking master class

Almost every reputable cafe in Siem Reap offers a master class on cooking Khmer cuisine, as is always stated on the sign on the gate. In our opinion, Khmer cuisine is even closer to Europeans than Thai: at least not a single Amok or Lok Lak forced us to order a double portion of juice or tea to quench the fire in our mouths. And in Thailand this happened often. average price one-hour culinary master class in Siem Reap – $20.

Here are the websites of several Siem Reap restaurants that offer cooking classes:

Khmer cuisine is no less tasty than Thai, and not as spicy. And the ingredients for many dishes - such as - can be found in Russia.

4. Khmer boxing

The official name of this martial art is Kun Khmer. In general, it is very similar to, but it has its own aspects. One of the best boxing stadiums in the country, CTN Angkor Arena, is located in Siem Reap. Fights with the participation of the country's best athletes take place twice a week: on Mondays (starts at 17:30) and Wednesdays (starts at 15:30). The start time of the show may change, check on the official website. Entrance ticket price starts from $15.

5. Siem Reap Museums

If you are a history buff, including very recent history, then these Siem Reap attractions are at your service.

There are three museums in the city. Foremost - Angkor National Museum(Angkor National Museum) where you can see archaeological artifacts and learn the history of Angkor, including through a multimedia presentation. Admission is $12 plus $2 for photography and video.

Many attractions in Siem Reap, including National Museum Angkor are located in the very center of the city.

Siem Reap Military Museum(War Museum) will show you different types weapons that were used during the wars in Cambodia at the end of the 20th century. Including (well, what would we do without them) a Kalashnikov assault rifle and a T-34 tank. Admission is $5.

Anti-Personnel Mine Museum(Cambodia Land Mine Museum) is an eerie place and at the same time a charitable organization, where you will see mines, bombs and other means of genocide of their own people - a favorite pastime of people who, until recently, were in power in this country.

  • Angkor National Museum, official site

6. Old Market

The market is like a market))) On the one hand, there is an opinion that prices there are too high. On the other hand, there is nowhere else to buy souvenirs from Siem Reap. Therefore, if you want to take a piece of Cambodia (made in China) with you, this is the place for you.

7. Pub Street

What to do on this short but pretty street is clear from its name))) Draft beer here is probably the cheapest in Siem Reap. But it’s worth coming here not even for a drink, but for a pleasant, peaceful atmosphere at the end of a hard day spent sightseeing in Siem Reap.

Sights of Siem Reap: Pub Street is somewhat similar to Bangkok's Khao San. Only the backpackers here no longer have backpacks and are not yet trading. It’s also very hot there, so in the photo I’m actively cooling down. What did you think?)))

There are no direct flights from Russia to Siem Reap, but from neighboring cities (Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City) you can either fly by plane (several airlines fly to the city) or by bus. If you are interested in how to get to the cities listed in brackets, follow the corresponding links.

From Thailand to Siem Reap

There are several ways to get from Bangkok to Cambodia. The most convenient way to travel is by train throughout Thailand and by bus in Cambodia. In Bangkok, take the train from Hual Lamphong Station to Aranyaprathet, near the Cambodian border. You can get directly to the border Poipet by motorbike, tuk-tuk or bus (the most cheap option). It’s easier to take a taxi from Poipet to Siem Reap - prices in Cambodia are unusually low. But for those who want to save money, there are also buses.

From Vietnam to Siem Reap

Royal Khmer Airlines planes fly from Hanoi to Siem Reap, and Vietnam Airlines planes also fly from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. From Ho Chi Minh City you can get to Siem Reap by land through the capital of Cambodia: there is a 6-hour bus to Phnom Penh, departing from the station located on Pham Ngu Lao Street.

From Laos to Siem Reap

From the capital of Laos - Vientiane - you can fly through the Laotian city of Pakse to Siem Reap on Lao Airlines. You can also travel along the same route, but by land, but this will be done with an overnight transfer in a bus with sleeping berths (the so-called “Sleeping bus”).

From Cambodian cities to Siem Reap

They run between provincial capitals intercity buses- This is perhaps the best option to get from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. Buses running between these cities are quite comfortable and inexpensive - a trip will cost about $5.

Ferries also run from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap, crossing Cambodia's main lake, Tonle Sap. True, the downside here is both the high cost (about $25) and non-compliance with safety standards and, as a result, terrible overcrowding of the ferries. There is a ferry from Battambang to Siem Reap, although this option is not as convenient as traveling along the same route by land.

Siem Reap (Cambodia) – picturesque city, located in the north-west of the country in province of the same name, famous for Angkor - the center of the ancient Khmer Empire. With the opening of this attraction at the end of the 19th century, tourism began to develop in the city, and the first hotel was opened back in 1923.

Today Siem Reap is the fastest growing city in Cambodia with modern hotels and ancient architectural monuments. Siem Reap is the most popular city countries - more than a million travelers visit it every year.

There's more to see in Siem Reap than just Angkor, as it has a rich past, embraces several religions, and is a budget shopping destination. What you need to know about holidays in Siem Reap? We'll tell you in this article.

Advice! Cambodia has enough low prices for all entertainment and services, so in order not to waste time looking for exchangers, take with you plenty of small bills in denominations up to $10.

Climate Features

As in all of Cambodia, the temperature here does not drop below 25 degrees Celsius even at night. The hottest month is April, the coldest period (during the day the air warms up to 31°C) is from October to December.

It is worth planning a trip to Siem Reap (Cambodia) taking into account the characteristics of the tropical monsoon climate, because the heavy rainy season begins here from July to September.

Despite the massive reduction in prices, foreigners rarely come here during this period.

The optimal time to travel to Siem Reap is winter. From November to April, the dry season begins in Cambodia, which is also high, but at the end of autumn there is still precipitation, and in spring the air temperature rises too high.

Comfortable housing: where and how much?

Accommodation prices are reasonable throughout Cambodia, and even though Siem Reap is tourist city, here you can rent a room in a two-star hotel for $15 per night. Cheap hotels(for example, Baby Elephant Boutique, Mingalar Inn, Parklane Hotel) are located in the southern part of the city, where there are few attractions, but many tourists and cafes.

Parklane Hotel

All hotels have wireless Internet, Breakfast is usually for an additional fee. True, having lunch at one of the establishments located nearby will be much more profitable.

Important! Even though there are several hostels in Siem Reap, it is not worth checking into them. Often in such hostels the prices practically do not differ from hotel prices, and from comfortable conditions only the bed remains shared room and amenities on the floor.

Where to go for gourmets?

Fish Amok

Khmer cuisine is considered one of the most delicious in all of Asia. It was formed under the influence neighboring countries, especially China, India and Vietnam, but there is still a lot of interesting and unusual things left in it. So, every traveler who wants to experience all the delights of Siem Reap cuisine should try:

  1. Amok – fish/chicken/shrimp in banana leaves, marinated in a sauce of spices and coconut milk. Served with rice.
  2. Khmer curry. Soup with vegetables, meat and spices.
  3. Lock varnish. Pieces of fried chicken or beef with a salad of onions, cucumbers and tomatoes.

Street food here is represented by soups with dumplings, noodles or vegetables ($1-3). In addition, Siem Reap has a lot of rice and seafood; these are the dishes that are usually included in business lunches in all cafes.

Sights of Siem Reap

Founded by a sapper soldier, this museum is home to several dozen cleared mines that were found in different parts of Cambodia. There are no long excursions or complicated stories, everything is extremely simple: a mine or its unique photo, data on how it was going to be used and the consequences it could lead to.

  • The museum is open on weekends from 7:30 to 17:30.
  • Entrance fee is $5 per person.
  • The attraction is located within the Angkor National Park, 7 km south of the Banteay Srei Temple.

Nearby there is a small store with cheap souvenirs in the form of cartridges, weapons, helmets, etc.

War Museum

This open-air war museum is also connected to Cambodia's sad past. An attraction that impresses with its realism and conveys all the events of the 20th century in Siem Reap. Presented here combat aircraft, tanks, helicopters, conventional and edged weapons, shells and other war-related objects. But what's more impressive about this museum are the photos of Siem Reap and the rest of Cambodia from that period that you won't see anywhere else in the world.

The War Museum is a must see for every traveler who wants to better understand Cambodia.

  • Entry price – $5
  • Located 15 minutes walk from the center.
  • Open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.

Interesting to know! The ticket price includes guide services, photo and video shooting, and the opportunity to hold a weapon.

Phnom Kulen National Park National Park)

Love beautiful nature? Then be sure to visit this park. It is here that the waterfalls known throughout Cambodia are located, and it is here that the Khmer Empire was born 1,100 years ago.

The national park contains several attractions of Siem Reap:

  • Reclining Buddha statue (8 meters). This place is considered sacred to local population. For many years, Cambodians have been going here for pilgrimage, and even the need to climb to the top of the cliff (approximately 500 meters high) does not prevent them from observing this tradition;
  • Ruins of a Khmer temple - remains of a terrace ancient building stored in national park several centuries;
  • The Siem Reap River, on both sides of which there are a thousand sculptures of Lingam and Yoni, which in Shaivism symbolize the feminine and masculine principles.

Important! You can swim in the river and waterfalls (in certain areas), so don't forget to take a change of clothes with you.

The park is located outside of Siem Reap - a 48 km drive, so it is better to book a taxi or excursion at the hotel in advance.

If you dream of going back in time, you can throw away the blueprint for a fantastic car and just go to temple complex Bayon. Situated in the center of Angkor, it has been and remains a mystery since the 12th century AD.

Fifty-four towers cascade into the sky. On each of them there are 4 faces (four images of King Jayarvarman VII), absolutely identical to each other. Depending on the time of day and sunlight, the mood of these faces changes, and with them the atmosphere of this place.

To take a photo with the Bayon Temple in the background, you need to try very hard, especially if you arrive in the morning, because this is the time when tourists come here to watch the sunrise at Angkor Wat. We advise you to visit this attraction in the afternoon.

On a note! There are no shops with water or food on the territory of the complex or near it - collect everything you need in advance.

This temple is sacred place for Saivite Cambodians. Despite the fact that it was built over a thousand years ago, it is still in good condition today. The temple is located a little away from other temples and is surrounded on all sides by the jungle, so there are fewer people here and there is the silence that is necessary to visit this attraction.

Royal Park Siem Reap is not the most outstanding attraction in Cambodia, but if you have time, come here just for a walk. It is decorated with several dozen sculptures, two lakes and many different trees. They sell delicious ice cream here, which you can enjoy while sitting in the cool shade on one of the small benches.

The main street of Siem Reap, a place where life is continuous and fun is endless. Even if you're not a fan nightlife and noisy gatherings, you will be interested in visiting one of the colorful cafes located on Pub street.

In addition to catering establishments, there are beauty salons, massage rooms, discos and many shops. By the way, one of the features of this street in the daytime is a large number of traders of tasty and inexpensive food.

Carefully! Do not take a lot of money with you, not so much because it can be stolen, but because of the small price of alcoholic drinks and snacks - from 25 cents/liter.

Angkor Night Market

Cambodia is an ideal country for budget shopping. At least for local markets and there are no expensive brands or designer items, it is full of quality clothes, shoes, souvenirs, jewelry and spices. Despite the name, the Angkor Night Market is open during the day. Remember, the main rule of such places is not to be shy about bargaining, this will help reduce your costs by two to three times.

Interesting to know! According to travelers, it is better to buy souvenirs and other things in Siem Reap, and not in other areas of Cambodia, since prices are the lowest here.

How to get there: all options

By plane

Despite the fact that Siem Reap has an international airport located 7 km from the city, you can only fly here from nearby Asian countries (Korea, Thailand, China, Vietnam) and the capital of Cambodia - Phnom Penh. We have identified three of the most convenient and profitable routes to Siem Reap for domestic travelers.

Compare accommodation prices using this form

The route from Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam)

The distance between cities is about 500 km. Every day 5 or more planes fly in this direction, travel time is 1 hour without transfers, tickets cost about $120.

There are no direct buses on this route. For 8-17 dollars you can get to the capital of Cambodia and transfer to one of the suitable buses.

How to get from Bangkok (Thailand) to Siem Reap

An expensive but fast way is to fly from Suvarnabhumi. The flight takes about an hour, tickets cost from $130. More a budget option– flights from Donmuang. AirAsia planes fly from here two or three times a day; travel time does not change, unlike the price ($80).

Two buses leave from Mo Chit bus station every day at 8 and 9 am. The trip takes about 6 hours (due to delays at the border) and costs $22 per person. The price includes lunch. From Ekkamai East Terminal, the route operates every two hours between 06:30 and 16:30. Travel time is 7-8 hours, cost is $6.

In addition, buses go from and to Suvarnabhumi Airport. They depart every two hours (from 7 am to 5 pm) and cost $6 per person. The trip takes 5 hours.

You can also get from Bangkok to Siem Reap by taxi, but only to the Cambodian border. The price is 50-60 dollars, travel time is 2.5 hours. From there you can get to your destination by local taxi ($20-30) or bus.

Road from the capital of Cambodia

  1. Excellent connections between cities bus service, several dozen cars ply this route every day. Tickets cost from 8 to 15 dollars, you can buy them either at the bus station/stop or in advance on the Internet (bookmebus.com), there is no difference in price. The drive takes about 6 hours.
  2. You can also cover the 230 km between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap by plane - it will take about $100 and 45 minutes.
  3. A taxi will be more comfortable and faster, but more expensive than a bus. You can catch a car anywhere, the cost depends on your bargaining ability and the arrogance of the driver (from 60 to 100 dollars).
  4. You can also get to Siem Reap by “Kiwi” - a car or minibus from the company of the same name, which transports small groups of tourists (up to 16 people). This method of transportation will cost you $40-50.

Public transport in Siem Reap

The city's transport infrastructure is not very developed. Local residents mostly travel on foot or ride small scooters. Travelers can use the following modes of transport:

  • Knock Knock. This small motorcycle with sidecar is considered a budget version of a taxi. You can catch him in every area, but this is much easier to do than to fight off persistent drivers offering their services. There is no fixed price for such transport, so bargaining is not encouraged local residents, may be quite appropriate;
  • Taxi. The cost of one trip within the city is about 7 dollars. It is better to order a car at the hotel, but catching a free car on the street is also not very difficult. If you want to visit all the attractions of Siem Reap, rent a taxi for the whole day. The cost of such a service is only $25;
  • Bike. It can be rented in almost every hotel for about $0.6 per hour ( daily rental cheaper). But be careful: if you are going to visit attractions, do not leave your bike unattended - it could be stolen.

Note! Motorcycles and dirt bikes are prohibited in Siem Reap.

Siem Reap (Cambodia) is a colorful place with a rich historical past and impressive sights. Discover the culture of this country. Have a nice trip!

Siem Reap was once a small village that specialized in trade and fish. Now the local government is doing everything possible to expand and improve living conditions. Today, many hotels have been built in Siem Reap, entertainment centers and parks, but to see real Khmer life, you need to go to the villages on the outskirts. You should also definitely go to Tonle Sap Lake, where there is a unique opportunity to visit floating villages and get acquainted with the way of life of the population. Everyone will be happy to show how they make a living by fishing, what they eat and where their family members sleep. If you like the tourist, he will definitely be invited to dinner. This unique walk will leave behind a lot of impressions and emotions.

Curiosity made me go on a journey from the comfort of Thailand to the unknown and even a little scary Cambodia. And a burning desire to see with my own eyes the grandiose temple complex of Angkor. In a word, I wanted something exotic that would be more exotic than Thailand.

And so, on an unbearably hot April Thai morning, my friend and I boarded a minibus that was supposed to take us to the border with Cambodia. We didn’t know what awaited us in Siem Reap, and what our Cambodian three days would be like.

The first strong shock awaited us immediately after our passport was stamped and released from the border zone. We set foot on Cambodian soil, and were immediately attacked by a cloud of local children, small or small. Little earners followed the tourists in the hope of getting their “one dollar”, and the tourists, in turn, rushed to quickly get into a taxi in order to finally get to their hotel and wash off the road dust.

tour cost

My friend and I, without any fear as tourists, traveled independently from Pattaya on a city bus to Cambodia and at the same time having practically no knowledge English language! The trip took us 3 days.

In Pattaya at the North Station we bought tickets for regular bus for 600 baht (1 ticket - 300 baht) to the border with Cambodia (the border town in Cambodia is Poipet). Since the bus stopped a couple of kilometers from the border, we had to hire a local tuk-tuk (motorcycle with sidecar), paying 120 baht. We applied for the visa directly in Poipet, in visa center. We brought photographs for the visa with us. The visa cost $20, plus they charged us an additional 100 baht, supposedly for helping us fill out the forms. After crossing the border we arrived at free bus to the mini station from which minibuses depart to Siam Reap. Then we got to Siam Reap by minibus and paid $5 per person for the trip. The minibus driver entered Siam Reap and dropped us off on some street where we could immediately hire a tuk-tuk to move around the city and to the temples, so we did that and found a tuk-tuk driver named Pi. Pi took us to several hotels, we chose the one we liked the most and stayed in it. In two days in double room in a hotel with a pool and Wi-Fi we paid 44 dollars, this is a very reasonable price! We went back by direct tourist bus Siam Reap - Pattaya, ticket price was 27 dollars.

The most famous excursion in Cambodia is the large temple complex of Ankor.

Tickets were purchased immediately before entering. Thought out convenient system, there is a 1 day ticket, a 3 day ticket and a 7 day ticket. We purchased a ticket for 3 days, paying $40 per person. Because old City Anchor is located a few kilometers from the city of Siem Reap, and the territory of the temple complex is huge (about 30 km2); we immediately found a guide in a tuk-tuk in Siem Reap. We were very lucky with him, he knew a little Russian, helped us find a hotel, buy back bus tickets, and accompanied us around the temple complex. For all this we paid 45 dollars. In the evening he took us to the hotel, the next day he took us to most of the temples (at the same time, he carefully planned the route and we did not intersect with the main flow of tourists), and the next morning we visited the remaining temples with him and he took us by bus to Pattaya.

Food and products

The most popular product in Cambodia is drinking water. The water that flows in the water supply is disgusting to wash with, let alone drink! A 0.5 liter bottle of non-carbonated water costs from 1 to 5 dollars. Depending on the place of purchase.

For a small pizza in a hotel cafe we paid about 3 dollars. Basically food reasonable prices, and there is a huge choice of where to eat. It is very convenient in supermarkets that you can pay at the checkout counters in both US dollars and local money.

Souvenirs and other goods

We haggled for a long time at the market and were able to buy decent T-shirts for 2-3 dollars. I bought a warm scarf for $4. Quite cheap.
