The name of the Trocadero quarter is associated with the historical events that took place in this place, so there was once a Spanish fortress here, bearing the name Trocadero, and the French were able to take this fortress by storm in 1823, and in honor of this significant historical event for the French they named the area where it is today Chaillot Palace is located.

In the photo is the Trocadero Palace, destroyed to make way for the construction of another palace - Chaillot.

The building was built in the twentieth century; the reason for the construction of the structure was the World Exhibition, which was to be held in 1937. During this period, various architectural projects were actively implemented: the authorities wanted to surprise guests with the pomp and grandeur of the city.

The main architect of the palace building was Jacques Carlu, his main assistants were Louis-Hippolyte Boileau and Leon Azema. It was no coincidence that the choice fell on these architects, since at one time they became winners of the Grand Prix in Rome.

The territory chosen for development was not empty - there was a rather ugly palace built in 1878 on it. The first thing the project managers had to do was to order the building to be demolished and clear space for the construction of a new structure. The work was carried out at a fast pace, and the project was delivered exactly on schedule.

The building of the Chaillot Palace is an architectural monument of the 30s; it is made in a laconic, rather austere style, characteristic of the typical architecture of the thirties of the last century. The style is strict, laconic. The color scheme of the external walls of the palace is pale, light beige. Characterized by clear lines and regular geometric shapes. Sandstone of golden shades was used to cover the facades; the construction of the internal structure was carried out using massive stone blocks.

The windows of the palace are high, emphasizing the simplicity and at the same time majesty of the structure. Architects attribute the building to the neoclassical style.

The palace consists of two massive buildings, made in the form of arcs, facing one another. The shape of the building when viewed from above resembles a semicircle divided by a terraced area. The size of the site is sixty meters, in the middle of it there are bronze statues. I must say that best view You can see the Eiffel Tower from the palace terrace.

An extensive aquarium was created under the palace on the site of former quarries. During its history, the CineAqua aquarium was closed twice for restoration (in 1937 and from 1985 to 2006), and only in mid-2006 its state-of-the-art halls opened their doors to visitors.

On this moment the aquarium is one of the ten best in the world. His collection includes representatives of underwater flora and fauna of different latitudes globe(sharks, rays, carp, tropical fish species). Scientific and popular science films about undersea world and its features. The total number of representatives of marine animals, according to the latest data, was 15 thousand.

The Chaillot Palace itself, as well as the park area, have repeatedly become the main characters during the filming of films, so in 1959 several scenes were filmed on the territory of the palace for the film “The Four Hundred Blows”.

In 2007, the film “Siko” was filmed here, and the film “French Kiss” (1995) was filmed here. This is far from full list films filmed both on the territory and in the Chaillot Palace itself.

In addition, the films of European and American directors who captured the Chaillot Palace in the frames of their films: “The Four Hundred Blows”, “28 Weeks Later” and “Rush Hour 3” also gained worldwide fame.

Together with cinema, the palace has repeatedly become the hero of fiction; Emile Zola mentions the palace in his work “Page of Love”. Fans of the science fiction writer H.G. Wells probably remember his work “The World Set Free,” which contains memories of the palace. Also, Marcel Proust in his novel “In Search of Lost Time” does not ignore the Chaillot Palace.

Location

The Palais de Chaillot is located at:

  • 1 Place du Trocadero et du 11 Novembre, 75116 Paris, France.

It is marked on all guidebooks and tourist routes.

Location of the Chaillot Palace on the map of Paris:

Story
The Palais de Chaillot in Paris was built in 1937 for the International Paris Exhibition. On this site, before the construction of the palace, there was a pleasure house with terraced gardens built for Catherine de Medici, then a monastery, then the eastern Trocadero palace. However, as fate would have it, none of these buildings became the favorite of the Parisians, so it was decided to clear this place for the construction of a new palace. The project of the new palace was worked on by L. Boileau, L. Azema and J. Carl.

Modernity
The attractiveness of the location of the Palais de Chaillot in Paris is that it is literally next to Eiffel Tower and tourists do not have to travel far to explore it. There is a lot to see in the Palace, because today it houses the National Maritime Museum, the Museum of Humanity and the Museum of Architecture. The site of the former quarries of Paris is now occupied by the wonderful Cinémathèque Française aquarium.
The palace in Paris became the location where the action of such films as “French Kiss” (1995), “The Four Hundred Blows” (1959), “28 Weeks Later” (2007), “Siko” (2007), “Rush Hour 3” ( 2007) and many others.

Architecture
The Chaillot Palace consists of two huge pavilions diverging in arcs on both sides. Co observation deck The palace, which is located between two pavilions, offers a magnificent view of Paris, the Seine and the most advantageous view of the Eiffel Tower. This is where the Trocadero Gardens begin, conceived in 1878 on the occasion of the same International Paris Exhibition. The idea of the Trocadero belongs to the engineer Alfan. The gardens are located on a hill and frame two wings of the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. The gardens are lavishly decorated with numerous stairs and streams framed by picturesque stones. Here you can see the largest fountains in Paris.

Trocadero Gardens
In the center of the garden is the monumental De Varsovi fountain, which was designed by the architect Expert. De Varsovy is the most grandiose and beautiful water structure not only in Paris, but also in France of the twentieth century. 20 inclined cannons shoot 50-meter water jets, which form 56 sheaves of water, the path of which ends in eight water stairs.
Along the edges of the observation deck above the pool there are statues of “Man” and “Woman”.
Modern gardens The Trocadero consists of two English-style gardens. An artificial picturesque river meanders along the hill, forming quiet backwaters and miniature cascades.

Neighborhood
Hotels located near the palace in Paris are in constant demand among tourists, even though the prices for rooms in them are noticeably higher. Hotels in the surrounding area of Chaillot have varying levels of comfort and service, but this has little effect on their prices, which are invariably high. Cozy and neat hostels such as Convention Montparnasse or Le Faubourg are popular among regular visitors to the city.

Amazing views of the sights of Paris, found here literally at every step, have been captured by more than one generation of photographers and artists. Fragments of the Palace and garden are often found on canvases, postcards and photographs from different times.

Everyone who has visited Paris at least once has been here. Even those who bypass tourist areas and who have neglected, for example, the local obligatory “fun” - climbing. It is from Trocadéro Square that a beautiful and world-famous view of the “Iron Lady” of Paris opens.

I, like numerous tourists, of course, visited here on my first visit, but learned more about it later, when I became interested in history.

The square is so named in honor of the victory of the French army during the siege of the Spanish Fort Trocadero in 1823. Beautiful view opens onto the Eiffel Tower due to the fact that the square is located on the very high point Trocadero hill. And in its center there is a statue of the Marshal of France, General Foch, depicted on a dashing horse.

On Trocadéro Square, two buildings open up in front of you, between which there is a lovely view of the Eiffel Tower. And, as often happens, the sight of her makes us dizzy, and we completely forget about the world around us. However, let's pay attention to the Palais de Chaillot, for which the square is also famous.

Palace of Chaillot

In fact, the history of the palace began a long time ago. Even during the time of Catherine de Medici. Even then, in the 16th century, she chose Trocadero Hill for construction country house, which was subsequently acquired by Marshal of France François Bassompierre, who was later sent to the Bastille for 12 years by Richelieu. He was able to leave prison only after the death of the almighty cardinal.

In 1651, Queen Henrietta of England purchased the castle to found the Visitation monastery, where many people came noble ladies.

The fate of the long-suffering building on Trocadero Hill does not end there. Subsequently, the monastery is razed to the ground to rebuild the palace that Napoleon dreams of building for his son, the King of Rome. But this dream was shattered by the fall of the Empire. Even Trocadéro Square itself, until 1978, was named after the son of Napoleon I, Charles Joseph Bonaparte - King of Rome Square. And only in the second half of the century it was renamed in honor of the hill on which it was located.

This is what the design of Napoleon's Roman Palace looked like.

As a result, the building was commissioned for the World Exhibition in 1878 by the architect Gabriel Davu. He created Big hall, with two wings and two towers. The structure contained Byzantine elements and was called "Moorish". The facade of this palace was decorated with 22 “sculptures of power” in the form of various animals, each of which symbolized one of the most influential countries of that era. There were both, and Russia, and. etc. Aristide Cavelle-Coll built a large organ in concert hall building. It became the first musical instrument in France that is still in working order today. The building was unpopular for a long time, in which we see similarities with the Eiffel Tower, which also did not please the residents of Paris in the first years of its existence. The palace, with its simple and unornate architecture in the Art Nouveau style, seemed unattractive to sophisticated French people.

As a result, the palace stood until 1937, the date when today's Palais de Chaillot was built for the International Exhibition of Art and Technology. The designers of the new palace were Louis-Hippolyte Boileau, Jacques Carlu and Azema. Some elements that were reminiscent of the old were retained, such as the two wings in the shape of a wide arc.

Also, a new building was erected on the foundation of the old one. And the statues that decorated the halls of the former were preserved and sent to other palaces or museums in Paris. We can find some of these sculptures near the Musée d'Orsay.

Thus, we still observe a certain continuity through the centuries. However, instead of building a central hall, it was decided to leave the wide esplanade, famous today for its views of the Eiffel Tower.

Today this esplanade has officially been renamed the “Human Rights Esplanade”. Why suddenly? The fact is that in 1948, at the Chaillot Palace, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Palace Museums

Today the palace is home to several museums. There are two, which are located in the south wing. These are the National Maritime Museum of France, which is a naval museum, and the Museum of Man. The nautical museum displays many different exhibits that belonged to King Louis XV. The history of the French navy is told here using the example of ship models and their equipment. One of the most interesting exhibits is the boat on which the ashes of Emperor Napoleon I were transported from St. Helena to Paris for burial.

The Museum of Man is known as the museum of ethnology, and through its many collections and exhibitions, scientists strive to understand humanity and human nature. Some of the collections from this museum recently moved to the Branly Museum. However, not all exhibits have left their usual halls, so the Museum of Man is still worth a visit, in my opinion.

The last one, which opened not so long ago, in 2007, is called the Museum of Architectural Heritage of France. Architecture from the Middle Ages to the present day is presented here.

In addition to the museums, the Palais de Chaillot building houses the National Theater of Chaillot, where you can watch productions of mainly classical plays by various authors.

True, all the plays are performed in French, so without knowing the language, visiting the theater may not make sense. It is interesting because it is located in the basement in an underground hall. And it was in this very theater in 1977 that Vysotsky played Hamlet during a tour of the Taganka Theater.

Anything to add?

Located on the right bank of the Seine, on the same axis with the Military Academy and the esplanade of the Champs de Mars. In the Middle Ages, a fortress stood on the site of the Chaillot Palace.

History of the palace

The Palais de Chaillot was built in 1878 before the World Exhibition. The extensive building stood for more than 60 years and was extensively renovated before the next World Trade Forum was held in 1937. The architects of the Palais de Chaillot were Carlu, Boileau and Azema. The palace consists of two arched wings, each of which is 195 meters long. From the terrace of the Palais de Chaillot there is a beautiful view of the Eiffel Tower, the Champs de Mars and the Military Academy. Today the palace building houses an extensive museum complex.

In the eastern wing of the palace there is an exhibition of monumental art. The western wing houses Maritime Museum, which was moved here from the Louvre. On display in this museum is a model of the ship “Pretty Woman”, on board of which Napoleon’s ashes were delivered to France. The Museum of Man, which displays ethnographic and anthropological collections, is worthy of attention. This museum is famous for its unique documents on the origins of man.

Another interesting one museum at the Palais de Chaillot is the Cinema Museum with a huge collection of exhibits telling about the history of cinema. Just below the level of the palace, in the depths of the hill that goes down to the Seine, there is an underground hall National Theater Chateau, the stage of which is located directly under the Seine. The interiors of the theater are also decorated with decorative paintings by Maurice Denis, Friez, Dufy and Bonnard.

Garden of the Palace of Chaillot was also reconstructed after the 1937 World's Fair. The exhibition area is decorated with powerful fountains, which are the largest fountains in Paris. This garden has an aquarium containing all types of fish found in the rivers and lakes of France.

The subject of our attention, the Chaillot Palace, made in the neoclassical style, is located in the seventh capital of France - Paris. On the opposite bank of the river. The Trocadero quarter is located on the Seine, where the majestic Eiffel Tower stands. This is an elevated piece of land on the north bank of the Seine.

The quarter owes its name to a historical event - the capture of a fortress that previously belonged to the Spaniards. Although it belongs geographically to the seventh administrative district Paris: stands apart. You can get here by crossing the Seine along one of three bridges, all of them are unique, of amazing beauty with their own history:

  1. Pont Alma - originates near the entrance to the Paris sewers.
  2. The Pont Debilly is a modern pedestrian crossing that starts from the Quai Branly Museum. Walking along it, you will find yourself in front of the famous modern Tokyo Palace.
