A fortress and balloons in Kamenets-Podolsky, an Austrian holiday in Chernivtsi or leaf fall in the Sofievsky Arboretum. We have selected three cities in Ukraine where it is best to go in the fall.

Kamenets-Podolsky inspires

The ancient architecture of Kamenets-Podolsky creates a special atmosphere of the city at any time of the year. But it is in the fall that thousands of tourists come to the city to fly in a hot air balloon.

Every year since 1998, Kamenets-Podilskyi hosts balloon festival. And if at first less than 10 balloons took part in it, now there are several dozen of them. The venue was chosen for a reason. It was here in the 18th century that a person flew in a hot air balloon for the first time in Ukraine. During the festival, professional athletes compete for the title of champion of Ukraine in balloon flights. Watching this action is exciting. Well, after the winner is determined, everyone can fly. Just imagine - you rise above the picturesque canyon of the Smotrich River and the ancient fortress at an altitude of 200 meters!

If you've never flown on such a transport before, don't worry. An instructor will accompany you on this air journey - he knows exactly how to operate this thing correctly. If you want to take part in such an adventure, you need to hurry - the aeronautics festival will be held from October 4 to 8.

It is better to book your flight in advance (for example, or). The price of an air tour is on average from UAH 2900 (€ 93) per person. You can fly at sunrise at 05:30 or at sunset at 18:00, but flights at these times will cost more.

Kamenets-Podolsky will not limit itself to one festival in October. Almost simultaneously with this event, on October 7-8, the city will host the Oktoberfest beer and good mood festival. The program includes a wide variety of beers, traditional beer snacks, fun games and performances by rock bands.

In your free time from entertainment, be sure to stroll through the old town and feel the medieval atmosphere in the Kamenets-Podolsk fortress.

Chernivtsi is fun

Chernivtsi celebrates its 609th anniversary this year. The city's birthday is traditionally celebrated in the first week of October. In 2017, this date is October 7.

Even on weekdays the city looks elegant thanks to its architecture (it’s not for nothing that it’s called little Vienna!), but on holidays Chernivtsi is completely unrecognizable. Fairs with food and souvenirs open in the center, artists exhibit their works, local artists and musicians dance and sing, animators entertain guests, and interactive zones operate. The program of events can be found in the online poster of the city of Chernivtsi.

When you are in the city, go for a walk along the pedestrian street named after. Olga Kobylyanskaya, walk through Cathedral Square, St. Mary's Square, where magnificent views open up, along the Central Square near the Town Hall. Once at the Town Hall at 12:00, listen - at the top of the tower, a trumpeter in a Bukovinian costume plays the anthem of Chernivtsi - the melodic “Marichka”.

And don't forget to go to Chernivtsi National University (Kotsyubinskogo str., 2) . Previously, the former residence of the metropolitans of Bukovina. The university is considered one of the most outstanding works of European architecture, and the building complex is listed world heritage UNESCO. Be sure to walk along the ancient corridors of the academic buildings, look into the Metropolitan and Seminary buildings, and take a walk through the arboretum. You can even feel like a student and join the lecture for a while.

Uman inspires

Everyone goes to Uman to take a walk in the Sofievsky Arboretum. At least 500 thousand people visit Sofiyivka every year.

The arboretum in Sofievka is a man-made monument to world gardening art. Back in the 16th century, it was founded for his wife Sofia by Count Pototsky, who owned the city of Uman. 800 serfs worked on the construction of the park. Some of them even died from hard physical work.

Fountains, grottoes, caves, unique trees, shrubs, flowers, antique sculptures - Sofiyivka stretches over 180 hectares (or 250 football fields). Now imagine how it all looks in the fall! Best time for autumn walks in the park - early to mid-October.

If it's not too cold, go for a boat ride on the "underwater river Styx". You will find yourself in a cave and swim in a tunnel for almost a quarter of a kilometer. Through small holes in the stones, the sun's rays penetrate inside, and it looks impressive.

The arboretum is open every day from Tuesday to Sunday inclusive. Opening hours are from 9:00 to 18:00. Entrance fee - 25-40 UAH. You will find “Sofievka” at the address: st. Kyiv 12-a. The park is open from April 15 to November 15.

Additional Information

Castle or Turkish Bridge connecting the fortress and the Old Town.

Kamenets-Podolsky owes its attractiveness largely to its geographical location. The old part of the city is comfortably located on a huge cliff in the center of the loop canyon formed by the bend of the Smotrich River.

Over the course of its existence, the old town has accumulated a large number of architectural monuments and other interesting things.

Queue for entrance tickets to the fortress.

Since City Day and the balloon festival were held at the same time, people gathered in the city great amount of people. It was necessary to work hard to find housing.

Therefore, if you are planning to visit this a beautiful city In the midst of some festival or holiday, I recommend taking care of accommodation for the night in advance.

Fortress diagram.

The fortress is very ancient, almost the same as Kamenets-Podolsky itself.

I will not list its entire history, about which hundreds of articles have been written. But in almost every one of them, there is one interesting legend about the fortress. When, in 1621, the Turkish Khan Osman, approaching with his army close to the walls of the fortress, with the intention of capturing it, he asked the guards: “Who strengthened this fortress like that?” “God himself,” the guards answered the khan. “Then let God take it,” replied Osman, and turned his army in the opposite direction.

We will limit ourselves to this.

Medieval cannon.

Castle well.

Wheel for raising water.

In one of the towers of the fortress, still sitting in indefinite imprisonment, is the famous Ukrainian peasant, leader of the peasant movement in Podolia in 1813 - 1835 - Ustim Yakimovich Karmelyuk.

Interior of Karmelyuk's cell.

For his actions during his life, Ataman Karmelyuk was repeatedly imprisoned in one of the towers of the Kamenets-Podolsk fortress.

In a pottery workshop, anyone can feel like a master and, after taking a short master class from a real potter, make a clay souvenir as a souvenir.

Potter's wheel.

What comes out of a piece of ordinary clay.

The entire courtyard of the fortress is paved with cobblestones.

As usual, there are various attractions and entertainment for tourists: you can do archery, visit an exhibition of medieval weapons, go down to the cellars of the casemates, take part in various medieval amusements, buy something as a souvenir in one of the souvenir shops, or just climb into your fun along the fortress walls and corridors.

It must be said that all towers and fortress walls are equipped with wooden stairs for the convenience and safety of visitors.

View of Kamenets-Podolsky.

From the fortress walls there are beautiful views of all the city surroundings.

Towers of the fortress.

St. George's Cathedral is visible in the opening of the loophole.

For the sake of good photos, many tourists try to climb higher and more extreme, even despite prohibiting signs.

What to do. Although people are not birds, they also love heights.

I don’t know about the whole day, but it will definitely take three or four hours to visit the fortress.

Everything about the food here is also well thought out.

In a small castle cafe, you will be offered: borscht, solyanka, shish kebab, baked potatoes and vegetables, amazing banosh, and other snacks.

You will be offered to wash down all these delicacies with knightly mead or medieval beer.

Everything is simple, but believe me, it’s quite tasty and not at all expensive.

There are so many people who want to have a snack in the fresh air that the griller simply has no time to rest.

Potatoes are prepared here according to a special recipe, having previously been wrapped in pork fat mesh.

The smells dissipate incredible; it’s simply impossible to pass by without ordering a portion of kebab.

Banosh (porridge made from corn grits) from a cauldron is also an excellent side dish for barbecue.

And here is the cauldron with borscht. The costumes of the waiters and cooks add even more flavor to the dinner.

After lunch, you should definitely go down to the casemates.

Here, wax figures will try to convey all the horror of the bygone times of this fortress.

Not Madame Tussauds, but the figures help transport you back in time.

You can get there by going down the stone stairs in the center of the Turkish Bridge.

A serious building.

Suspension bridge over Smotrich.

It’s interesting that ordinary modern people live among all these medieval buildings.

I love suspension bridges, you experience unusual sensations. Especially when it is suspended somewhere in the Himalayas.

On the way you come across the wooden Church of the Exaltation of the Cross; they say it was built without a single nail.

The climb is actually not as difficult as it might seem.

From the hill there are simply magical views of the fortress and surrounding area.

The Kamenets-Podolsk Fortress often serves as a backdrop for historical films; numerous thematic festivals and historical reconstructions are held here.

Look how well this couple got along. So, taking a blanket with you would be a great idea.

Homes of local residents.

By the way, it is always interesting to find out the correct name of the inhabitants of cities with complex names. For example, those who live in Kamenets-Podilskyi are called “Kamenets”.

The Cross of Concord is not an ancient monument. It was installed quite recently - in 2001.
