A sand spit miraculously appeared under her feet, along which she ran to her lover, as if fluttering above the water. Her movement was interrupted by a shot. The arrow pierced the chest of the princess, who fell into the water and drowned, turning the sea near the fisherman's boat red.

Problems of the Maiden's Braid in Marmaris

Turkish agencies are flagrantly violating Protocol 2 of the Barcelona Convention on the Mediterranean Sea. Thousands of tourists daily invade the protected area of the sea, disturbing the ecology and preventing the environment from recovering. Yachts crash the shore, the lack of a pier is a global problem. Local residents sadly state: If ten years ago tourists walked along the spit, barely covering their heels with water, now the water level has risen and is approximately knee-deep for an adult. In another ten years the water level will probably rise to waist level.

And this is not surprising, because the country, located at the junction of Asia and Europe, is so rich in attractions that everyone needs to see. A wonderful place is Kyz-Kumu spit near Marmaris.

Geographical location of Kyz-Kumu

Near Marmaris - a port city and one of the resorts on the southwestern side of Turkey, on the shore Mediterranean Sea, stands the small and peaceful village of Orhaniye. Here in the beautiful and picturesque bay, settled down quite mysterious place- Kyz-Kumu braid. Translated from Turkish, its name sounds like “Maiden Sand”, but the name “Maiden Braid” is more often used.
She is a long sand beach, contrary to logic, spreading not only along the sea, but going half a kilometer deep into the water surface. In fact, the narrow beach area was formed thanks to Mother Nature, namely, underwater currents that washed up sand and brownish-pinkish pebbles over a long period of time. Thus, a reddish sandbank appeared, creating a path leading into the sea.
The depth here is small, about 30 cm (ankle-deep), while on the sides the sea goes several kilometers down. Due to the fact that the sand spit actually divides the bay in half, swimming is allowed only on one side, where the sand borders the open sea. On the other hand, the water is not so clean; it contains silt and other contaminants. You can get there by taxi or yacht; there are also buses along the Marmaris - Orhaniye route.

Two sad legends about the Maiden's Braid

It’s no wonder that there are legends about the town of Kyz-Kumu...! The first says that there once lived a princess of extraordinary beauty. Once, evil pirates tried to kidnap the beauty, but she managed to escape. The girl collected a lot of sand into the hem of her dress and, while running away, threw small handfuls at her feet to create a saving path. But the sand soon ran out, and as a result, the girl drowned in the sea, never finishing the sandy road.
The second tells an equally amazing love story. A beautiful young lady was in a hurry to meet her fisherman lover. In order not to take a detour, the girl decided to take a shortcut. Having collected sand into her hem, she decided to make a path across the sea. The beauty poured sand in front of her and ran along the sandy path. As a result, the sand ran out and the girl drowned. These amazing legends are dedicated to the Kyz-Kumu spit and give this place its name.

Sad facts

Marmaris is located in a unique natural place, at the junction of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas. Marmaris itself is the pearl of the Aegean Sea, but few people know that near Marmaris there are beautiful, picturesque, much less popular among tourists, picturesque places that we also recommend visiting.

27 kilometers southwest of Marmaris there is a villageOrk. The sea bay, located in Orhaniye, has a unique attraction, a sand spit along which you can almost cross from one side of the bay to the other, and the water level will be barely above your knees. Unfortunately, the spit breaks off before reaching the other shore. It’s deep on both sides of this spit, but walking along the spit, you will feel able to “walk on water as if on dry land.”

There is a belief that if you make a wish to reach the end of the sand spit and return back, then it will certainly come true. We hope that this is exactly what will happen for you. The sand spit is called Kyz Kumu, which can be translated as Maiden Sand or Maiden Spit.

According to legend, this braid was made by a girl, collecting sand into her hem and pouring it out in front of her in order to meet her lover living on the other side. But there was not enough sand, and the girl was never able to reunite with her lover. In fact, the spit does not consist entirely of sand, but of small red pebbles mixed with sand, like crushed stone. Since the scythe is of reddish light, most of the legends associated with it have a gloomy shade, and often end in the death of the unfortunate girl. On the rocks nearby you can see the remains of stonework. In ancient times, the city of Bibass was located there. According to another legend, the daughter of King Bibass fell in love with a simple fisherman living on the opposite bank. At night, the girl went ashore, gave a sign to her lover with a torch, and he sailed to her on a boat. The girl's father found out about their meetings and the next night the girl was forcibly brought ashore where the guards lit a torch and gave a signal to lure the young man into a trap. In an effort to warn the young man, the girl threw herself into the water, and the sand rose under her feet and she ran along it as if on dry land, but before reaching the other shore, she was killed by one of the guards, shielding the young man, who sailed to this place on a boat, from then on. The braid has a reddish light, as if stained with the girl’s blood.

Whether this was actually the case is not known, but this unique natural phenomenon amazes the imagination and makes you believe in a miracle. Maiden's Spit is part of Hisaranu Bay, and its length is about 600 meters. Coming off the spit you can swim, it is deep on both sides. On the shore of the bay there are several well-equipped beaches with sun loungers, showers, cafes and restaurants. There is also a marina called Jennet Marina, which in Russian means paradise coast. There are several not too expensive comfortable hotels where you can stay overnight. Also, several pleasure yachts depart from the Kyz Kumu beach, conducting excursions around, which will invite you to enjoy boat trip within 6-7 hours. At the same time, you will be able to swim in the cleanest warm bays, eat fish for lunch and in the evening return to Marmaris by service bus.
