Cultural complex of Lednice-Valtice. Czech Republic. Cultural complex of Lednice-Valtice – excursion to Lednice Lednice-Valtice

Far, far away in Alps, between Austria And Switzerland, is a picturesque principality, the size of which evokes an indulgent smile from any citizen of our vast country. However, having learned about the level of per capita income of this dwarf state, the condescending smile of a citizen of our country will be replaced in the blink of an eye by a bilious, envious grimace.

It's called the principality Liechtenstein. It is ruled by a dynasty of princes Liechtenstein, originating from XII century. In distant times Liechtenscheins owned large territories throughout Europe, on which they liked to build palaces and castles. Today we will talk about two such palaces.

Lednice- a small village that was given to the princes Liechtenstein V XIII century, when they were not yet princes, but were barons, and they were not entitled to such excesses. As we see, the barons lived well, enjoying such benefits as owning entire villages.

WITH XII centuries there stood a Gothic fortress, which was small and uncomfortable. Therefore, the new princes decided to rebuild it into a more luxurious and modern palace. As the fashion for various architectural styles changed, the appearance of the palace also changed. The palace acquired its modern appearance already in XIX century - neo-Gothic style Tudor.

As usual, near the palace there is a large green Park with a pond. A little to the north, where the pond ends, there is a minaret, tall 60 meters, which is the only one in Czech Republic.

There is a legend that they wanted to build a church on that place, but the developed spider of bureaucracy with its tentacles issued a ban on the allocation of additional land. In order to take revenge and shame the bureaucratic gentlemen, an Islamic minaret was built in a non-Islamic country. I don’t know how this could harm anyone, but such a legend exists.

If you leave the palace Lednice and walk south, you can find an alley running into the distance. After just 7 km we will come to another one, no less interesting village. Although various sources will correct me here. The village actually turned out to be a city. How could I?! Insulted as many as 3.5 thousand residents.

Valtice- a city that was donated to the same princes, and where they built their residence. The palace was rebuilt many times, and the architects settled on the Baroque style. Was the main place of residence of the family Liechtenstein, while behind Lednice the status of a summer residence was secured. Judging by the area of the adjacent parks, this is exactly the situation I would have assumed if I had not read it before.

Castle Valtice famous for its wine cellars. A network of labyrinths connects a dozen cellars where underground tours and drink tastings are held. For those who are sad and depressed, this is a great way to cheer up and have fun.

Liechtensteins received their titles by ardently supporting the dynasty Habsburgs who were one of the most influential dynasties in Europe. But nothing lasts forever under the sun. Habsburgs weakened and ended. The last of the line of dynasties was the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. All more or less educated people know that his murder in Sarajevo V 1914 year served as a formal reason for starting First World War. Oh these Habsburgs.

At the end of the war in 1918 broke up Austro-Hungarian Empire and a number of new states were formed. Among which - Czechoslovakia. On this territory we found ourselves Valtice And Lednice. Accordingly, all the princes lost their privileges and lands. And then Second World War these palaces were completely expropriated by the state.

Now there, of course, museum complexes available for visiting. They are located in South Moravia, near the city Brno, almost on the border with Austria. IN 1996 year Cultural complex Lednice-Valtice included in the list world heritage UNESCO.

Vast areas on both sides of Moravia's modern border with Austria were praised by generations of the Liechtenstein family during its 600 years of rule. One of the most influential families of the then Europe, in a very impressive manner, created here an elegant French garden and a beautiful English park, and also built here romantic buildings of many styles, as an example of the extravagance of the rich aristocracy.

The perfect combination of architecture, nature and good wine

Lednice Castle acquired its impressive neo-Gothic appearance thanks to reconstruction in the middle of the 19th century. At that time, the castle served as a summer meeting place for European nobility. The second of the castles - Valtice - was majestic residence Austrian and Moravian nobles from Liechtenstein. It is known not only for its beauty, but also for its ancient winemaking traditions. Grapes were brought here by the Roman legions of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, who considered the area suitable for growing wine. You can also experience not only a unique cultural experience, but also try a glass of fine Moravian wine at the local Wine Salon.

To the minaret? To the minaret!

The local park surrounding both castles is one of the most picturesque in Europe. Here you can find artificial landscapes with many ponds covered with water lilies, dense forests, meadows full of flowers and rare trees. For the pleasure and surprise of guests, Viennese architects incorporated romantic buildings into this landscape, which give the city a unique character. You can climb to the top of the 60 m high minaret, which offers an unforgettable view of the entire complex, have a pleasant picnic at the Rendezvous hunting castle, or take a boat ride to the ruins of Janova Castle. If you like cycling, you can ride around the local castle park.

Czech Lednice Castle, which is quite appropriately called a palace - most interesting object for visiting by tourists. No less fascinating is the history of the Liechtenstein family, which owned the land with park complexes and buildings for more than 600 years. It was because of Lednice Castle and other property of the rulers of the dwarf state, nationalized by the government of Czechoslovakia in 1945, that until 2009 there was no diplomatic relations between the Principality of Liechtenstein and Czechoslovakia, and then the Czech Republic.

From images from different heights you can get an idea of the natural and man-made landscape of the territory located near the Diye River.

The bend of the river with small islands and a distant tall structure, forests and peasant fields in the immediate vicinity are clearly visible. The contours of the buildings of the vast estate with a noticeable glazed greenhouse, the geometric patterns of the park paths and the buildings of the adjacent town are clearly visible.

A little history of Lednice Castle

Historians date the foundation of the fortress in this area to the beginning of the 13th century. A Gothic fortress supposedly stood on this site, which, together with the surrounding lands, was granted by the Czech king Wenceslas I for the use of the Austrian nobleman Siegfried Sirotka.

Somewhat later, ownership of the castle of Lednice and the neighboring one, located near Mikulovo, passed to the family of the Austrian princes of Liechtenstein. Over the long centuries of its existence, the family nest has repeatedly changed its appearance in accordance with the change in fashionable architectural styles. In the 16th century, on the site of a medieval fortress, a castle in the Renaissance style was erected, which by the end of the 17th century was reconstructed in the Baroque style and a riding arena was built. Then it was broken landscape park. The main structure of the estate acquired its present appearance in the middle of the 19th century.

The prudent attitude of the Czech state towards its current property, confiscated from the most influential owners, deserves great respect.

The Prince of Liechtenstein, who hid in his Czech possessions, stained himself by collaborating with the Nazis, and all his estates were confiscated in 1945. An influential head of the principality, before the war he was one of the 10 richest Europeans.

Architectural appearance of Lednice Castle

The complexity of building the estate, visible from high-altitude photographs, when approaching it from the south side, appears as three protruding parts of the facade, structurally having great differences. Particularly striking is the similar Catholic cathedral fragment of a building with huge Gothic windows, turrets and arches.

The area in front of the building is perfectly leveled, absolutely straight paths divide the evenly trimmed lawn with flower beds into parts. Large woody vegetation sets off the light tone of the walls. You should not spare time for a detailed external inspection of the building; from each angle new details of its design and decoration are revealed.

The details of the individual elements of the main building of Lednice Castle are made very carefully, striking with the beauty and elegance of their forms. Carved facades are crowned with stucco cornices, converging into spiers with intricate decorations. The tall multifaceted turret in the center of the ensemble is unique, which is crowned by a patterned spire in the shape of a sharp tent, with a small dome, an apple and ending with a Catholic cross. The window openings in this part of the main building of Lednice Castle are made in the Gothic tradition. Both the window opening itself and the constituent parts of the window frame have the shape of an elongated arch. Here the arches intertwine into a peculiar pattern crowning the window frame.

The same motifs form the basis for the design of the balcony on the adjacent wall. The figurines of the patron saints of the family are enclosed in openwork arched structures with decorating inserts. In general, the balcony decorations originally follow the outlines of the window openings of the building.

The balcony columns are unusual, consisting of three closed trunks, crowned by a common capital of a bizarre shape. The capital ends with a flat hexagon, which serves as the basis for the supporting pillar of the portal. The horizontal beams are skillfully made, decorated with floral patterns in combination with figurines of mythical animals near the knight’s shields.

Patterns with birds and plant stems are also decorated with the jibs connecting the pillars to the beams. Sunlight penetrating through the transparent ceiling gives the ornaments clearly visible outlines, allowing one to appreciate all the splendor of the decoration.

The interior view of the terrace is also decorated quite colorfully. A simple ornament in a fence looks impressive due to the through carving, which includes natural details of the surrounding landscape in the image. Columns border a balcony with a fountain installed on it. Opens from a bench near the wall behind the source good review picturesque surroundings. There are wild trees, evenly trimmed bushes, and green lawns with flower beds.

One of the arches of the picturesque building, decorated with painted shields with heraldic heraldic images, attracts the attention of visitors. Obviously, these are the family emblems of the families that became related to the Liechtensteins over the long years of the princes’ presence among the European elite. The family came from Austrian Styria, the princes gradually acquired extensive possessions both in their native country and in neighboring Czech Moravia.

The total area of land owned by the family significantly exceeded the area independent state Liechtenstein, granted a sovereign reign to one of the representatives of the family in 1719. The tiny country with a population of 35 thousand people has retained its independence to this day.

The northern façade of the eastern wing of the main building of Lednice Castle is decorated with large rectangular windows with an extensive terrace on the ceiling of the first tier. The second floor is decorated with walls with fortress-type battlements and turrets of various sizes. The northern entrance is equipped with a double-sided staircase opening onto a high balustrade, fenced with figured railings.

A long glassed-in greenhouse adjoins the eastern end of the building. The shape of the greenhouse is similar to a modern hangar, but the glazing and vegetation visible through it reveal the purpose of this structure.

Manege

The arena is located west of the main building of the estate. This building, with a courtyard open to the north, is U-shaped.

Now this spacious building is used for organizing temporary thematic exhibitions, and other exhibitions are also held here. public events, allowing you to diversify the rest of tourists visiting Lednice Castle.

Orangery of Lednice Castle

The beginning of the botanical collection of Lednice Castle is located in the part of the palace premises adjacent to the glass hangar. The tallest specimens of plants with lignified trunks grow here, requiring the largest volume of space for successful long-term development.

It is spacious enough here for visitors admiring the plants, who have the opportunity to relax on prepared seats near an artificial pond. The pool is inhabited by beautiful fish, landscaped with water-loving plants and attracts young biologists.

The greenhouse itself consists of a central strip of plantings, viewing paths and plantings along glass walls, complemented by hanging containers for plants. A variety of containers, from pots to large tubs, and trellises for climbing vines are also used in the greenhouse.

There is a great variety of species of flowering and decorative foliage plants; there are low-growing groundcovers, medium-sized ones, and real giants. When choosing plants, preference is given to southern species that do not grow in the Czech Republic under normal conditions.

The real pearl of the Lednice Castle greenhouse is a tropical pond located in artificial thickets, including bamboo, various palm trees and well-known monsteras. In the foreground you can see the water-loving cyperus and other coastal plants, against the background of which flash the most curious inhabitants of the reservoir - live fish.

Exotic goldfish coexist with other species, and all of them are objects of interested attention of nature lovers. The greenhouse, which previously served only to provide the residents of Lednice Castle with cut flowers, now plays the role of a real botanical garden.

I’ll slowly start talking about our summer trip to the Czech Republic. I warn you right away that there will be a lot of locks. On the very first day we visited Lednice Castle, which is located in the south of the Czech Republic, near the Austrian border. The Lednice-Valtice complex covers an area of almost 300 km2 (!) - this is the most big park Europe! Therefore, I will divide the story about the castle into two parts - the first, today's, will be devoted to the interiors of the castle, and the second part - to the park! Since 1249, Lednice and the surrounding area belonged to the Liechtensteins - the very rulers of the Principality of Liechtenstein between Austria and Switzerland.

The first rule of being a castle lover in the Czech Republic is that they are all closed on Mondays, so plan your trip accordingly! As for Lednice, I would advise taking at least half a day to explore it, or better yet a whole day, because there really is something to see here both architecturally and in natural landscape terms.

The first castle in the Renaissance style appeared here in the 16th century; according to ancient engravings, the castle looked like a luxurious Italian villa. A century later, Lednice Castle was rebuilt in Baroque style. One of the Liechtensteins, Karl Oysebius, who started perestroika, devoted his whole life to it. It was under him that it arose beautiful park French type near the castle, which before that was an ordinary banal Renaissance park.

The next art lover was Anton Florian, the Austrian ambassador to the Vatican, who built in Lednice Botanical Garden. His son continued the magnificent reconstruction of the castle. But the greatest contribution to the castle was perhaps made by Alois Lichtenstein, who was ambassador to England. It was he who rebuilt Lednice in the English Tudor Gothic style in the 19th century.

I think the castle is beautiful! For some reason, there are few reviews about it on the Russian-language Internet, I hope that after my story, many will understand that they should definitely go here!

Another important digression on the castles of the Czech Republic - after the Second World War in the Czech Republic, a number of castles, whose owners supported the Nazi occupiers, became the property of the state. Some castles returned to the heirs, while others remained with the state. This happened with Lednice Castle - in 1945 it was taken from the Liechtenstein family and it became state property.

Let's explore the interiors of the castle! In the Czech Republic, the principle of visiting castles is the same as in Slovakia - only with a guide during an excursion. In different castles, the tour languages differ, in Lednice - only Czech, but we were given a small brochure in Russian. You can also take photographs of interiors in Lednice, although you must purchase the appropriate permit!

Horns and stuffed animals will haunt you in all Czech castles, here the hunting collection was “weak”.

This is a hunting hall

The stuffed "unicorn" is actually a long, straight and sharp unicorn horn made from the tooth of a narva fish.

Stuffed animals and antlers indicate the date and place of the hunt, as well as the name of the hunter.

The coolest collection of stuffed animals was in Konopiste Castle, but unfortunately, it was impossible to take photographs there

The main entrance has a very beautiful carved staircase. At the top of the staircase, large brass chandeliers hang one above the other. Previously, the walls of the staircase were filled with paintings from the large collection of paintings by the Liechtenstein family, but now only three of them can be seen here. Unfortunately, there are not many genuine exhibits directly related to the history of the castle, since some of them were taken abroad by the owners during the Second World War, and some disappeared after the nationalization of the castle in 1945.

Chinese cabinet: amazing rice papyrus wallpaper, which depicts people smaller than animals and plants

One of the most luxurious halls of the palace is the Turquoise Hall, so named because of the main color used in its decoration. Here you can see portraits of representatives of the Liechtenstein family.

You can get acquainted with the life of the nobility by looking into a small but homely bedroom with small pictures on the walls and colorful wallpaper.

One of the main decorations of Lednice Castle is the magnificent spiral staircase in the library. Three craftsmen worked for five years to create this openwork twisted miracle, made from solid oak. The work was done so skillfully that the staircase appears to be woven from lace. There is not a single nail here; the necessary connections of the components were made using spikes. It was installed in 1851.

The cassette ceiling made of linden and oak has a complex patterned relief, the walls are covered up to the middle with wooden panels, which harmoniously merge with the carved portal of the door and go perfectly with the wooden bookcases, which house a collection of more than 2000 copies of books.

The red salon was available only to men. Separated from the ladies, they could calmly smoke, gamble, and discuss men's affairs. Its interior is designed in dark burgundy tones, the round tables are a copy of the tables of the early 16th century, but the armor of the same era is original.

A dining room with a massive table that could be extended if necessary, thereby increasing its size. Here you can also see a rack with pewter utensils and a mirror, which is about 300 years old.

Blue dance hall. The greatest interest in it is the ceiling, in the wooden rhombuses of which carved wooden lace is inserted. These diamond patterns are not repeated. And there was also a guy speaking who you could leave money to.

The full version of this story (there are 3 times more photographs there) -

In the south of Moravia, where the borders of the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia meet, lies the village of Lednice. She's famous medieval castle. The attraction is unique: together with the Valtice Palace, with which it is connected by a 7-kilometer linden alley, forms the Lednice-Valtice castle and park area with an area of 200 hectares.

There are instructions in pictures so that you don’t forget what tasting is and where its limits are. But with such an abundance of wine, it is difficult to determine the boundary.

It is better to take a ticket for a tasting with a guide. He will give all the necessary recommendations."
