“I fully support the hotel administration. Just the other day I returned from Kemer, where I watched some “hippos” with three chins helping themselves to half a bucket of food (judging by the plates). It looks disgusting - as if they are fattening themselves up here until next summer. They still don’t eat half or more. One young lady in front of me picked up some bread, simply tore it into pieces and threw this mountain on a plate. By the way, everyone naturally ate bread like it was the last time in their lives,” writes Olga Cherukhina.

And yet, the essence of most comments is similar: if they do this, then why are we all so ashamed?

Russian Union of Travel Industry: “By buying a tour, you accept the rules of the game”

OK-inform asked Pavel Rumyantsev, a representative of the North-West branch of the Russian Union of Tourism Industry (RST), to comment on the situation.

“It seems to me that this is illegal, because the hotel employees (even from the security service) are not the police. And here we have to choose what is more profitable for tourists: to part amicably and admit that they carried out something wrong - or to wait for the police. Most hotels are always ready to accommodate their customers. If you really want to take something as a souvenir, come and ask. A hotel that values ​​its reputation will most likely agree and simply give you the same slippers or toilet paper.”

But as for the buffet, here, according to the PCT representative, the hotel administration is still wrong - not to mention the educational aspect.

“There are types of meals - half board, board, all inclusive, etc. Having purchased a certain type of food on a trip, the tourist gets the right to use it. And if it’s “all inclusive,” then he can take as much food as he sees fit. Even if he miscalculated the strength, it still shouldn't be his problem. He also paid for a certain format in the tour package. Of course, we are all taught to take as much food as you can definitely eat, but this already relates to issues of education and culture and does not have a legal norm. Even if tourists have eaten all the food from the buffet, the hotel is obliged to supplement the assortment. And no administrative measures are possible, you can only exhort and conduct a dialogue.”

Of course, the hotel has its own rules, which also need to be heeded, since the hotel is private property and can dictate certain norms on its territory.

“For example, many hotels require that food not be taken out of the restaurant, and this may not be explained by the greed of hoteliers, but by sanitary rules or the likelihood of consumer extremism. For example, a guest took some food from the buffet, put it somewhere, it spoiled, then he ate it, got poisoned and sued the hotel for poor quality food.”

Pavel Rumyantsev says that the tour operator is obliged to warn the client about the specific rules of behavior in the selected hotel, since this is one of the essential conditions of the tour.

“By paying for the tour, including hotel accommodation, the client thereby signs an agreement that he agrees with these rules. Therefore, it is better to find out about all the subtleties in advance, and if you are not satisfied with them, choose another option,” says the PCT representative. But a situation where a hotel imposes sanctions on tourists after the fact can negatively affect the hotel’s reputation.
