    • Review to Silver Ring In August, we were literally lucky enough to visit a very interesting excursion along the Saimaa Canal. If you approach things “scientifically”, then on the holiday of February 23 you can combine business with pleasure: not only drink a glass of beer in good company, but also learn the history of brewing in our city. That’s what we did, going on the excursion “The Way of Beer in St. Petersburg”! Beer has been in St. Petersburg since its founding: sometimes it replaced unclean water, because... This drink contains vitamins and is good (in moderation) for health - it was even prescribed in “hospitals” as a remedy for scurvy! However, the history of brewing is even more ancient - beer came to us from Europe. The Czech Republic is a country that is invariably associated with quality brewing. Therefore, it is not surprising that our “Beer Path” began with a visit to the Czech restaurant-brewery “Stargorod”. The St. Petersburg “Stargorod” is nestled in historical center cities where the narrow streets and alleys are so reminiscent old Prague. And the surroundings of the brewery are appropriate! According to the best Czech traditions, “Stargorod” does not spray on a million types of beer, but brews only three varieties, which differ in strength and density, but are united in their uniqueness and unique taste. I was surprised by the fact that production control is carried out by the Prague Institute of Brewing - these are the invisible eyes of the main brewer of Europe - Prague! After tasting excellent beer and delicious snacks, we went to knowledge - to the museum of the history of brewing! It is located at the Stepan Razin plant and is the first in Russia beer-themed museum. Here, the head of the museum, Galina Vsevolodovna, enthusiastically told us about the culture of consumption and the secrets of creating the drink. We were especially interested in the story of Abraham Friedrich Krohn, the court baker of Catherine II, who, enterprisingly, used 30,000 rubles donated by the empress to build a small brewery not far from the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. “Nevskoe” beer in St. Petersburg is not accidental - it was originally brewed from Neva water. But Kron’s competitor Noah Cazalet, who built his factory near the Staro-Kalinkin Bridge, used well water, and the beer tasted different from Kronovsky. But in the middle of the 19th century, descendants united the breweries, and the enterprise “Cazalet, Kron and Co.” began to develop and expand near the Staro-Kalinkin Bridge. We know it better under the name “Stepan Razin”. And now several varieties of Stepan Razin beer are produced by the international concern Heineken, of which the company became a branch in 2005. The collection includes more than 600 exhibits. Some of them were found at the factory, others were purchased from collectors, and some were donated by other museums. Here is a copy of a model of an ancient Egyptian brewery, the original of which is in the Hermitage. One of the most interesting halls talks about brewing in Rus'. Here are the necessary items for brewing - an 18th-century copper kettle and grips, ancient forged scales with the date 1798 and ladles, various bottles and labels, an icon of St. Nicholas - the patron saint of brewing and other exhibits, for example, the manual “How to brew beer at home”. After meeting With the history of brewing, we already, as experts in this field, went to the famous “Karl and Friedrich”. This is a restaurant with its own brewery, which is located in a picturesque corner of Krestovsky Island. Here we got acquainted with the Bavarian brewing traditions - the brewery produces 4 signature varieties and several seasonal ones according to the traditional Bavarian recipe in accordance with the Decree on the Purity of Brewing (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516. As befits German cuisine, the menu is dominated by meat dishes- the famous knuckle, Munich sausages, strips of pork ribs and other dishes that go well with beer. It is not surprising that from 2003 to 2012, “Karch and Friedrich” was “The Best Beer Restaurant in St. Petersburg”; it is one of the favorite places of the townspeople. There is also a real Biergarten here - a “beer garden” in the best German traditions for 1000 people. In winter, of course, it was not possible to fully enjoy it, but in summer it is undoubtedly beautiful place to spend the evening in cozy company in the fresh air.
