Depending on the airline’s internal rules, the stroller must be returned at the check-in counter, can be used before entering the sleeve or before boarding the plane, or can be taken with you into the cabin (it’s better to check the details in advance, then there will be no surprises at the airport). Most allow the use of a stroller up to the ramp at the passenger's request.

Usually you are allowed to take a compact folding stroller and a cane into the cabin. If the airline has a category for fragile luggage and the stroller is checked in at the check-in counter, then it is advisable to hand over the stroller marked for manual loading.

The stroller can be carried free of charge or included in your baggage allowance. It can be accepted as baggage, a separate piece, oversized or excess baggage.

In any case, the stroller should be in a case, cellophane, maybe wrapped with a sponge, and there should be a tag on the stroller with the contact information of the stroller owners, in case of any misunderstandings.

The stroller can be collected at the jetway if approved by the flight attendant, at the regular baggage carousel, or at the non-standard baggage counter.

To lighten the weight of the stroller, you need to remove all accessories from it - the hood, the basket and leave only a cup holder for a water bottle and a mosquito net.

It’s better not to take an expensive stroller on the road, then you won’t be upset if it gets scratched.

At large airports you can rent a stroller. In Vnukovo, all passengers with children under 5 years old are given a free stroller rental after registration.

Later, taller planes appeared, in which you can no longer hide a ladder (and it’s not safe to climb it), and then mobile ladders came into use: they can be. As a rule, the height of the upper platform is adjustable for different types aircraft, but, of course, within certain limits. For some types, it was necessary to develop special jetways and equip all airports where they flew with them, or invent unique solutions. For example, this was the case with the extremely tall Tu-114, which used a system of an airfield ramp and a built-in ladder leading from its upper platform directly to the aircraft.

When Khrushchev flew to New York on the Tu-114, it turned out that even the sliding ramp was too small for him.

Mobile gangways can be a little more comfortable - for example, have a roof and even a built-in escalator. Remember how the King of Saudi Arabia still stopped during his arrival in Moscow? By the way, such ladders existed in the USSR. In the late 1970s, two prototypes were manufactured in Riga and sent for testing to Vnukovo airport.

The ladder-escalator was made in the form of a trailer for a ZIL-130 truck; three ordinary steps led to the escalator itself. They say that Brezhnev (and it was for him and the members of the Politburo that the miracle ladders were intended) did not like this, so the experimental ladders remained experimental.

However, all the same, boarding through a regular ramp is not very comfortable - you have to go up and down with suitcases, and what if it rains, what if there is snow and wind? And to get to the ramp you need to walk from the terminal or take a bus - the urgency of the problem was understood even in the post-war period. In 1952, Whiting's Loadair system went into operation in Columbia: grooves were installed on the platform, rails were laid in them, and bogies were installed on the rails. The plane taxied onto these trolleys, after which it began to ride sideways along the rails, approaching the airport terminal ramp. Next, walkways were thrown from the ramp into the plane, and passengers were already walking along them and carts with cargo were driving - just like in modern warehouses, to which trucks and railway cars roll up. The solution made it possible to significantly reduce aircraft turnaround time by 50%.

In 1955, a similar Loadair system was launched in New York at the 4th gate of American Airlines at Idlewild Airport (now JFK), here the plane passed sideways for a minute for 27 meters under a small canopy, which in the future was also planned to be equipped with refueling hoses, Oil tanks and a ground-based power supply were located nearby. Alas, this entire facility operated for only a year, serving about 1,500 flights: during operation, many shortcomings were revealed. Firstly, separate flights had to be laid out for each type (the test system only supported the Douglas DC-7). Secondly, in winter the grooves became clogged with snow and ice (the problem was solved by installing a heating system, but why?), thirdly, due to jamming and asynchronous movement of all bogies, there were cases of damage to the chassis.

In general, if you don’t drag the plane to the passenger, then the passengers need to be dragged to the plane. In the 1950s, several “mobile waiting rooms” appeared at once, that is, buses from which you could get directly onto the plane. That is, first, passengers entered a bus installed at the terminal and sat quietly in it, and then it drove to the plane, docked and released passengers.

The first such vehicles simply had a built-in gangway; in later ones, the entire interior could be raised relative to the chassis. Until the end of the 1980s, this idea was quite common; even Aeroflot purchased a mobile VIP-Lounge from the German company Trepel. To this day, “lounges on wheels” operate at Washington Airport (IAD), although without ramps, but for movement between parts of the terminal, and may still remain in Montreal (YUL).

And back in the mid-1980s, the famous Ikarus produced conceptual buses: among them there were not only airport buses, but also city buses! That is, a passenger could board the bus right at the hotel, put his luggage in a special compartment and, having gone to the airport, drive straight to the plane and board it, and at that moment the luggage would be loaded on board via a conveyor.

Another system from the 50s was called Aerobridge. It was developed by Lockheed and, in fact, was truly the first telescopic gangway, but not in the modern sense. The Aerobridge was a gallery on wheels that drove into the space between the aircraft and the terminal ramp. Then it stretched to the required distance, and after the landing was completed, it folded again and left. It was tested at the US Air Force base "Travis" in 1956, the shortcomings were also quickly revealed: the "cart" had to be adjusted and then removed, fiddling with it took too much time.

One of the problematic issues that arise when preparing to fly with a small child is transporting the stroller on the plane. On the one hand, without this means of transportation it will be difficult both at the airport and during vacation at the place of arrival. On the other hand, there are some criteria that determine whether a stroller can be taken on a plane as hand luggage. What options are available for strollers that do not meet these parameters? How much will you need to pay for transporting a child’s personal transport on an airplane?

What stroller can you take on a plane?

Any stroller can and should be taken on a trip if your child is small, has difficulty walking or has not yet started walking. However, its place on board the aircraft (cabin or luggage compartment) and the moment of checking in luggage. To bring a stroller into the cabin, its size should not exceed the size of hand luggage (most of the world's airlines have set the size of luggage on board to 55x35x25 cm).

Nordstar sets the standard size of hand luggage for one passenger: 45x35x15 cm. However, it is clear that carrying such a mattress inside the cabin is inconvenient.
Therefore, the ladders are rolled up, compactly packed in a case, and supplied with a compressed gas cylinder with an inflation system. This happens at the manufacturer or repair organization.
Let me remind you about the inflation system that the main filler of the ladder is not the gas from the cylinder, but the air sucked inside the ladder using ejection. This way it works faster and requires a smaller volume of the cylinder.
The wing ladders (A319, A320) and the additional exit ladders in front and behind the wing (A321) have separate cylinders, each of which is connected to its own ladder with a hose.
And the ladders on the front and rear doors have built-in cylinders.

The ladder is attached to the entrance or service door.

It’s interesting that Airbus, of course, is a much more humane aircraft in this regard than the Boeing 737. On a Boeing, conductors have to bend over almost crookedly to manually insert or pull out these rods into the brackets. And here everything is in the mind.

Meanwhile, a mechanical indicator indicates the position of the boom.

If you now open the door from the inside, the ladder will be pulled out of its container, and the stretched cable will open the gas supply valve from the ladder cylinder to the ejector.
The ejector will suck air from the atmosphere into the ladder, and it will inflate.


The design of the door opening system disarms the ladder (that is, removes the bar from the opening brackets) when the door is opened from the outside. This ensures the safety of rescuers and others wishing to enter the reinforced door.

When leaving the plane along the ramp, you should not sit down on it, but, coming out to your full height, jump forward onto it with your butt and slide down.
Therefore, sharp heels in this case will not be appreciated by your followers.
