Colonia jose menino 2 south goa

Better than I expected.
I rested at the hotel alone, at the end of February - beginning of March 2019.

1. Hotel. I arrived at the hotel around 12 o'clock and was checked in immediately. We paid for a room without air conditioning. I asked for the number "in" quiet place“, but in this respect, in principle, all rooms in the hotel are equivalent. So: in “José Menino” there are 15-18 villas that are rented out for long-term or permanent residence, and 7 buildings that are used as a hotel (numbered: 5I, 5J, 4E, 4F, 5A, 4D, 4C). Each building has 4 rooms on the 1st floor and 4 rooms on the 2nd floor. The reviews wrote that all the rooms have air conditioning, only in some places it is connected and in others it is not. This is wrong. If there is an air conditioner, then the external unit will be visible - it will be mounted in a small window in the wall of the room. So, out of the seven buildings, if I’m not mistaken, rooms 5I, 5J, 4E, 4F are equipped with air conditioners.

The buildings are located as follows: 4F – closest to the reception; on the “street” parallel to the pool there are located – 5I, 5J, 4E; in the depths of the territory - 5A, 4D, 4C.

I got number 5A-04. In the designation of rooms, the first two characters mean the building number, the third character is the floor number, the fourth character is the room number (that is, in this building, rooms on the 1st floor will have the last 2 digits - 01, 02, 03, 04, and on the 2nd floor – I1, I2, I3, I4).

On one side of the pool is the “Colonia Jose”, and on the other is a complex of three- and four-story buildings – the “Clarem Guest House”. This hotel is a little cheaper, built on the same principle - some of the buildings are given over to permanent residence, and some are rented out as a hotel.

2. Number. The room had a decent-sized balcony overlooking a vacant lot located in the center of the hotel. It seems like the place is really quiet, but the wasteland was a place for dogs to gather at night, but more on that later. The room also had a small window under the ceiling. I think I was lucky with the room - the outer walls faced north-west and north-east, the room did not get very hot. There was always a shadow on the balcony. I didn’t regret that I took a room without an air conditioner - a fan was enough for me, however, at night in India the humidity reaches 100 percent, and this is where an air conditioner would come in handy - to “dry” the room. It is better not to leave swimsuits and towels on the balcony at night - by morning they will be completely damp. I hung them in the “shower” and they dried much better. The room is spacious and looks very good for a double in India. All the light bulbs worked; personally, there was enough lighting for me. The electrical sockets were loose, I found a better one and used it. The water heater worked well. There was no electric shock from the faucet in the shower in the first days, but for some reason after the first room cleaning I ordered, it began to give a little electric shock)) this remained a mystery to me. I put a bandage on the tap - it helped, but not 100%. Room cleaning is done according to the application principle - you need to give the key to the reception and say that cleaning is needed (at least “on your fingers”, they will understand you). During my two-week vacation, I ordered 4 times - the cleaning for a “double” was quite decent. The floor was washed, of course, only in visible places, the corners left much to be desired, but overall it was fine. The bed linen is always white, once they even made it completely new. The towels are strong, not torn, “almost” white. The plumbing was all in good order. I never turned on the TV. Water without foreign odors, of course I didn’t rinse my mouth, but it was nice to wash my face.

3. Security. I didn't use the safe. They took my passport upon check-in, and until check-out it was kept at the reception; I was not at all against this procedure. She kept the money in a suitcase under lock and key. Nothing was missing from personal belongings in the room. It’s quite safe to walk in cities and towns; personally, apart from goodwill, I didn’t see any other reaction from local residents. They took pictures with me, of course, several times, but always only with permission).

4. Swimming pool. I really liked the pool. The water is clean, sometimes it was crystal clear, it was clear that it had just been renewed, sometimes there were just traces of pollution. Warm water. Until 9 am, the pool is cleaned with a special underwater device. I also liked the fact that I often swam in it alone, like an oligarch)). The lounger could always be moved into light natural shade from the trees. Some sun loungers are in tolerable condition, some are of course very terrible, it is high time to replace them.

5. Breakfast. It’s very simple, even for India (I compared it from the stories of other experienced tourists). But after such a breakfast there is minimal risk of poisoning - and that’s good. Three toasts with butter and two cups of coffee with milk lasted me until lunch. I didn’t drink the juice in glasses; it seemed somehow suspicious and watery. I never bought buns from a guy who was a cyclist, because I saw how the same guys in the villages sell: they take the goods directly with their hands, the buns lie in a basket without bags. I don’t know, maybe the “hotel” guy is better in this regard.

6. Nutrition. I always had dinner in my room - it was my first time in India, so I had an impressive supply of non-perishable food with me), in addition, I bought food in the store. I dined several times at beach shacks - at Kasim's and at Erissio's. Liked. I can’t say anything about the shekis located in the village.

7. Night sleep. This is the only thing I didn't like about the hotel. I said above about high humidity, it’s hard to sleep - but the hotel, of course, can’t do anything about it, if this is critical for you, take a room with air conditioning. There are many dogs on the territory, many with collars - they seem to guard the “villas” located in the “Colony”. They bark every night. The doors in all rooms face the “street”, so if there is a party in the building opposite on the balcony, you can hear everything very well. I slept with earplugs. A separate topic is the bed). The mattress is, of course, hard, and the base is plywood, but in my room it was not as terrible as they wrote here in the reviews, not “like sleeping on the floor.” Can be compared to a shelf on a train. I was preparing for the worst, so I brought with me 4 inflatable “traveler” pillows (usually I take only two - they come in handy on the plane). I inflated them a little, then - into plastic bags, and under the mattress, in the back area. It turned out great, I slept comfortably).

8. Insects. Mosquitoes were occasionally in the room, the fumigators and sprays that I brought with me helped. On the first night there was an invasion of large black ants - but this was probably due to the fact that I left a jar of pate in the room. I had odorless dichlorvos with me. Having seen ants on the very first evening, I treated all the thresholds and doors, and went out for a walk for an hour. In the morning the entire floor was strewn with dead ants. This didn’t happen again, but I treated the doors with dichlorvos a couple more times for prevention.

9. Garbage on the hotel premises. Sorry, but I want to highlight this point separately. Hotel workers clean up trash on the premises, no matter what they say. But. I have repeatedly observed the following picture: a family is leaving the hotel, their suitcases are taken out of the room, and then a huge bag of garbage is thrown near the building. For what?! If you haven’t ordered cleaning for the last 2-3 days before departure – there’s really no point in that anymore – just leave your trash in your room! Personally, I did this: I threw paper trash and other things into a bucket, and that’s it.
what could attract ants - in a small plastic bag, and every evening during a walk I threw the bag into a large trash bin standing at the reception.

10. Road to the beach. Everything is great here. The road is not tiring, quite clean. No dogs accompanied me to the beach, maybe because I never fed them, I didn’t carry food with me in my bag to the beach.

11. Beach, sea. Great! I walked 4 km along the beach to the right and the same distance to the left - the beaches are all almost the same, but ours is really very clean and cozy. There were waves during my holiday; those who swim well overcome these waves and swim far into the sea, where the sea is already calmer. I’m not a good swimmer, so I “took baths” near the shore. Experienced tourists suggested that in these places the sea is calmest in December. The seabed is clean, smooth, and going into the sea is a pleasure. I didn’t see any living creatures or jellyfish, but once in my presence a woman was burned by a sea creature, like a jellyfish, consisting of a 3-4 cm bubble and several thin pale lilac tentacles.

12. Surrounding infrastructure. I liked the shop with souvenirs and clothes, the closest to the hotel is the one across the road (normal prices and some interesting things). I bought the necessary food and household goods from Rosa and a little further from her son at the mini-market. I went to Carmona only once - there is nothing to do there, if only to buy fruit, at the nearest fork there is a pavilion with fruits and vegetables, adjacent to residential building owner. It’s hard to go there during the day, and it’s a shame to waste time on this in the morning.

13. Currency exchange. 100 dollars were exchanged at the reception at the rate of 69. Rose exchanged for 70. The next hundred was exchanged in Cavelossim in a souvenir shop for 71 (at the Ayurvedic pharmacy the rate is the same). In addition to large bills, I advise you to take 10, 20 dollars. After all, it may turn out that at the end of your vacation you will need just a small amount, and you won’t be able to change the rupees back. Typically, those who regularly travel to India keep rupees “for the future.” And the fact that the exchange rate is unfavorable for small bills is an exaggeration. For example, during my vacation, Rosa changed 20 dollar bills at the rate of 68. Bank cards I didn't use it.

14. Bus service. I independently traveled to Palolem and Old Goa. All interesting routes start from Margao. Here they wrote in the reviews that the bus goes to Margao every hour. This is wrong. The first bus leaves from the intersection closest to the hotel at 6:40 every day except Sunday. Next at 7-35 from Margao the bus is coming straight to Palolem (no need to go to Canacona, and from there to Palolem by tuk-tuk). So, if you can catch these buses, it’s very convenient. The bus leaves Palolem for Margao at 16:40. The next bus in the morning to Margao leaves from “our” intersection only at 10-30, then at 13, if I’m not mistaken. And from Morgao the same way - not every hour. There are more frequent buses that go through Carmona - but keep in mind that you will be dropped off on a road that runs parallel to the road where the church and cafes closest to the hotel are located. And from there it’s more than a kilometer to walk to the hotel. In general, almost every bus has a sign with its schedule; it’s better to take a photo of it. Or do this - get on a bus that is convenient for you, immediately ask the driver what time it is and from what specific point he will go back.

15. Excursions. I bought two excursions from the hotel guide (Biblio-Globus) - Gokarna-Muradeshwar ($75) and Spice Garden Waterfall ($45). Liked. Guides, buses, included lunch - everything is good. I couldn’t find any local excursion agencies within walking distance from the hotel (there are only taxi drivers in front of the hotel, and it’s profitable to negotiate with them only if you go with three of you, their prices are very expensive, and they give up a maximum of 10%). At the end of my vacation, I found a tour desk in Cavelossim, Russians work there, I can give you their number.

I went to Old Goa on my own, it cost 160 rupees there and back by bus. Moreover, in addition to the three most famous temples, where tourists are taken en masse, I visited about 5 more (I was guided by Google map). I traveled on my own along the following route: to Margao, then Palolem (50 rupees), back - from Palolem to Agonda beach (tuk-tuk 400 rupees), then to Cola beach, then Cabo de Rama fort, then Cabo de Rama beach, and back to the hotel (tuk-tuk plus taxi, total 2000 rupees). So, on the last long section of the journey, a very young taxi driver was busy with me from 14 to 19 hours, showed me all the best corners for photo breaks, tried to tell me in English as best he could. The trip was not cheap, but I saw stunningly beautiful places.

16. Internet and communications. I didn’t buy a local SIM card; it doesn’t make sense for a 14-day vacation. I activated a service something like “Everywhere is like home,” and I used it a couple of times. I went online in cafes. By the way, “At Kasim’s” the Internet password was not changed even once during my vacation, which was very convenient). I used their sunbeds almost every day, had lunch there a couple of times, and hinted a couple more times that I needed to order something (I ordered beer). I kept in touch with the hotel guide via WhatsApp.

Overall conclusion regarding this resort town: I had a very comfortable holiday in India, the climate suited me very well, I would be happy to come to south Goa again, and most likely also to the Colva-Varca-Cavelossim area. India has amazing, helpful, hospitable people. In front of the Jose Menino Hotel there is a large construction site fenced off; most likely in the future, a luxurious “five” will be built here on line 1 - so if you are planning to relax in these places, hurry up - then it will be crowded and noisy!)

And finally, a conclusion about the hotel itself. I definitely recommend it. For the first time in my life I decided to go to a hotel with such a low rating. There's a lot left good impression There were very few downsides from the holiday; Considering the amount spent, you can completely turn a blind eye to them). But in the future, I’ll probably choose a hotel with a higher level of comfort.

Excellent hotel! Our apartment was located on the second floor. The room is spacious, there are two balconies. The furniture, of course, is not perfectly new, but it is still quite decent. We did not encounter any living creatures in the room, neither cockroaches nor ants. They cleaned it regularly, in principle it was normal. There is an excellent swimming pool on site, which is superbly looked after, so it is always a pleasure to swim in it. The walk to the ocean shore is 5-7 minutes along a straight road. The beach is wide with white sand, the water in the ocean is crystal clear. We ate at local establishments; the food was very tasty everywhere. The average bill for two was approximately 1000-1200 rupees, but this is the cost of a good table, after which it was not easy to get up straight. The exchange rate was 65 rupees to 1 dollar. Not far from Colonia José, we rented mopeds and drove around the surrounding area. The cost per day was 250 rupees. We were very pleased with our vacation, the price fully corresponds to the quality.

The hotel fully meets the requirements of 2 stars, even more than that. Location relative to other hotels, exactly this one seashore, magnificent. Everything in the room is in working order, the room is spacious and bright. The area is beautiful. I was pleased with the large swimming pool, which was always crystal clean. The food is always fresh and in large quantities, it is unrealistic to remain unfull. The hotel is perfect for both youth and family holidays, in general, everything is taken into account for everyone. The beach is simply top class. The ocean was calm, there was never a storm, although to be honest I wanted big waves. The vacation flew by incredibly quickly, we want more!

Simply an excellent hotel. What we liked most was the location of Colonia José; the walk to the beach was a couple of minutes, which is convenient when you are relaxing with small children. The hotel staff are incredibly friendly and smiling. Our trip included only breakfast. The food was hearty and tasty, I didn’t want to eat until lunch. The hotel is perfect for a relaxing family vacation, because located far from the noisy Goa. But transport works well, so we traveled around the city on our own several times for walks. The holiday was a great success; I didn’t want to go home at all. Thank you!

Second line of the beach. Distance to the sea - 350 m. Sand beach, municipal. The entrance to the sea is gentle.

A budget holiday option in a quiet place near the sea.
Good day, dear ones)

In this review I will talk about our stay in this hotel and a little about the trip in general.

I should immediately note that I was in India for the third time and there is something to compare with)

Hotel.

Location.

South Goa, the nearest village is Carmona (between Varca and Cavelossim). The place itself is very quiet: a hotel, several shops and cafes nearby, a road and a beach. That's it) The sea is nearby.
the rest of the infrastructure is at a distance. There are several ways to get there: on foot, by bike (rent 250-300 rupees per day), by taxi (300-400 rupees one way).
The nearest more or less civilized village of Cavelossima is 7-10 minutes by transport or 30-40 on foot along the beach.
There we met a Russian man who has been wintering in Goa for 15 years and last years exactly in this place, because he considers it the best for those who love a relaxing holiday.

Check-in.

We arrived at about 7 o'clock. By the time we went through security, received our luggage, and got ready to board the bus, about an hour passed. Next, about an hour, group transfer by bus from Pegasus. We were at the hotel around 9 am. At the reception they said that the rooms would be ready by 12. We put our suitcases and went to breakfast, then to the sea, returned by 12 and received the keys to the room.

Numbers.

We got room 4C-101 on the second floor (standard room without air conditioning and refrigerator).
We saw the photo here, but were still somewhat disappointed on the spot.
The room is very simple, although spacious.

Furniture:
- 2 beds (or one, as you request),
- wardrobe (normal size, with hangers),
- 1 small bedside table,
- mirror,
- 2 armchairs,
- small tea table,
- TV (old, for most it doesn’t work at all or only shows 1 channel, like ours, it’s a pity, on previous trips we liked to watch Indian movies in the evening)
- ceiling fan (we were lucky, there was a rotation speed control next to the switch, a convenient thing, my friends only had it on and off.) It is quite enough, there is no need to take rooms with old humming air conditioners.

In the bathroom: small sink, small mirror, toilet, shower, plastic barrel with watering can, bucket. The window, as often happens in Indian hotels, with bars, does not close. The shower in our room was very poorly located - next to the toilet, and since there was no partition or curtain, everything was wet. The drain is far away. There is always water on the floor after a shower (my friends did a better job).
A plus was the presence of two balconies (some rooms have only 1), on one, which is smaller, a clothesline with clothespins, on the second there are 2 plastic chairs and a trash bin.

The sockets are standard, but very bad, everything almost falls out of them. Although they worked and there were 5 of them in the room.

The refrigerator could be rented separately for 100 rupees per day (expensive, and they are old and scary, we didn’t take it).

The bed linen is white (well, almost), it is clear that it has been washed, but with stains that cannot be washed out in some places. So it’s clean, but if you’re squeamish, take your bedding with you. The mattresses are hard. The pillows are small and very uncomfortable. We suffered with them. There are no covers, just sheets to cover yourself.

The towels are also white and a bit stiff. Please note that there are only 3 towels for two people: 2 large bath towels and 1 small one for the feet, lying at the entrance to the bathroom. That is, there is no separate one for the face and hands, so either take some with you or buy it on the spot. In general, it wasn’t enough for us, although it’s ok for some.

The only insects in the room were midges, not many, but they seemed to bite and there were spiders here and there in the corners. We took a local mosquito fumigator, but it doesn’t help against midges.

Cleaning is purely symbolic: every 2 days you hand over the keys, wipe the floors, change bed linen and towels. We left a small tip once - no difference.

On the first day the situation seems depressing, then you get used to it)
We were pleased with the fresh air when you open the balconies in the morning for ventilation, the view of the palm trees and the sun.
The birds were tense. They scream very loudly there, to be honest: crows, pigeons and some others with a nasty scream, clearly not from heaven))

Reception.

The guys who work are quite friendly. Russian is not spoken and understood very well; it is better to know at least basic English. We bought water there and exchanged dollars. On the first day, their rate was the same as in the nearest store - 64 rupees per dollar (100 dollar bill), then for some reason they lowered it to 63, although everywhere the rate was rising and by the time we left in Cavelossim we were already offered to change at 67.

We took a tea boiler with us, but after a couple of days it burned down and the plugs were knocked out. They came to the reception and said that there was no light, a boy came, quickly did everything and showed where the shield was, if he knocked it out again.

Once there was no water, they called again, came quickly, turned all the knobs in the bathroom, the water came out)

Communication with a tour operator through them is also no problem, you come up, call the company, the name of the hotel guide, they dial the number themselves and pass the phone to talk.

There is also a safe, paid for, we did not use it. I had money with me and documents in my suitcase. Nothing is missing.

Territory

The area is large enough for 2*. There are many 2-3-story buildings. There is a lot of greenery, but somehow everything is not well maintained, and in places it is a bit dirty.
There is a swimming pool. But why is it needed when the sea is nearby? Tennis court (I saw someone playing there once in 2 weeks. There were a couple of cats and a lot of dogs running around the area. By the way, there are a lot of dogs in Goa in general).

Nutrition

Breakfast at the hotel is meager: tea, coffee, milk, sugary unnatural pineapple juice, toast, butter, 2 types of jam. A snack will do) You can order something extra at the hotel, but we didn’t try. We ate at a cafe on the beach. We bought some food in a small supermarket - it was cheap there, but much of the quality was so-so.

About the cafes: there are 7 closest to the hotel: one very close to the hotel, away from the sea, and 1 bar, further away in the same direction, from the sea, and then to the right, 2 more cafes. On the way to the beach, another 1. on the beach itself, the nearest 3. We always ate at Traveller's Inn near Kasim. If you face the sea, then the left one. 1 time we went to the right one out of three - cool breeze. Somehow we liked it less. average, we didn’t go to the reviews of friends. We also went to the Scorpion cafe - further away from these three, towards Varka. There were better chairs (instead of the plastic chairs in the nearby cafes), but we didn’t like the food at all. We also went to the cafe on the beach in Cavelossim, it’s more peaceful there. everything looks bigger, a little more expensive. Friends really liked the restaurant in Cavelossim on the main street with brown wicker chairs, I don’t remember the name, the sign is black and orange. The prices are a little higher, but the quality of the service and dishes is at a fairly high level.

Tour operator and flight.

We bought the ticket from Pegasus. We were met at the airport normally. The bus was old, with table fans attached that blew terribly. The transfer guides told us everything we needed both there and back.
And here hotel guide- this is something... Her name is Natalya. It’s not clear which of them made a mistake, I think it was her. But the information meeting was scheduled for 8 pm on the second day. We arrive, she’s not there. Waiting, no. We call, and she says that she came at lunchtime, but we weren’t there. Hmm... we postpone it to the next day. I didn't like her tone right away. Our friends had a difficult question about their return flight, which they wanted to resolve immediately, so the next morning they called her early to clarify the situation, to which she replied that she was still sleeping and hung up. I was late for the meeting this afternoon, although I didn’t warn about it. We waited. She came in and didn’t even say hello, she immediately started making accusations that they were waking her up in the morning after hours. It took me a long time to come. In fact, it didn't help at all. She also didn’t say anything sensible about the hotel and the area. I wrote out excursions, by the way, from a tour operator they are always 1.5-2 times more expensive than from local agencies. We didn't take it. She behaved badly throughout the meeting. We had to take off early. She said that the information would be at the stand the night before (after 7). We arrive - nothing. We ask at the reception: did you come in, call, give something? They say no. We believe. We're calling. She justifies herself by saying that she told the hotel that they didn’t write (I don’t believe it). I wrote down the departure time from her words. No apologies, no wishes for a good journey... The tone is as if everyone owes her.
Terrible! We have been traveling for a long time and this is the first time we have encountered such an attitude.

Flight with RoyalFly airline. Boeing plane. It's not very good inside - it's a bit cramped, there are no monitors, we were fed twice. It seems like a lot, but it’s all tasteless. Although the crew worked well.

Excursions.

We took a taxi.

First excursion: waterfall + spice plantation.
Taxi 2500 rupees per car + already on site 400 per person for jeeps to get through the reserve to the waterfall and 400 also for entrance to the plantation (an excursion with Russian speaking guide- about 30 minutes and lunch according to type buffet, about 30 more minutes. I note that there are several plantations. They work on a similar principle. The taxi driver took us to the nearest one, we didn’t like it. Compared to the last trip to another plantation. There and in time, the excursion was longer and the stories were more interesting, the food was better, and there were also elephants there, which you could ride or swim with for a fee.
For comparison, local travel agencies cost the same excursion 30-35 dollars per person. The tour operator has $60 per person, only + 3 more temples. Decide for yourself what to choose, but I recommend everyone to visit, it’s worth it)

The second excursion we went on was Murudeshwara. This is a city next door to Goa state, famous for the temple complex with a huge statue of the god Shiva on the seashore. The taxi cost $130 - a good minivan (for 5-7 people) with air conditioning. On site, if desired, entrance to the tower and temples costs a penny (10-20 rupees). There is a market for locals nearby, prices are low. The journey is 3.5 hours one way. Colorful. I also recommend)

Currency

Take dollars with you, 100 dollar bills (they have the best exchange rate), just make sure there are new ones, otherwise we had one from 1996, they barely changed it, and then in the neighboring village, we have one in our hotel and near it They refused to change.
