Branded trains of JSC Russian Railways

Every time you choose a train ticket, you see that the price depends on the category of train. So what is a “branded train” or its even more upscale variant, the “premium” class train? And how do they differ from their less titled brothers?

Characteristics of branded trains

Each branded train has its own unique name, selected in accordance with the route, its own style and design.
The branded train consists of cars that have been in operation for no more than 12 years. The luxury carriages of branded trains are divided into economy class, business class and luxury class carriages.
Luxury class carriages have only 4 compartments with heated floors, separate showers and toilets.

The ticket price for economy class carriages includes:

Branded trains are serviced by the best professional teams of conductors who have been certified to work on branded trains.

All branded trains provide their passengers with a guaranteed list of services included in the fare. These include:

  • serving tea or coffee 3 times a day or more at the passenger’s request;
  • making bed linen and cleaning beds;
  • fresh drinking water for passengers;

JSC Russian Railways is constantly expanding the list of services it provides and now offers passengers the following in many uniform trains:

  • children's playrooms;
  • rooms for negotiations and meetings;
  • household compartments with the ability to iron clothes or take a shower.
The branded train always includes a restaurant car, the menu of which includes a variety of dishes. To serve passengers with children and passengers with disabilities, ordering and delivery of dishes from the restaurant to the compartment is provided.

Branded premium trains

In the summer of 2009, six branded trains were transferred to the “premium” class, characterized by maximum comfort and safety. Such trains include only new cars.
Today, premium class trains run between Moscow, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Rostov-on-Don and Yekaterinburg.
The carriages are equipped with special air conditioning systems, toilet complexes, LCD TVs, magnetic locks and other modern equipment. In the service area of the car there is a refrigerator, sink, microwave and drinking water.
Special attention is paid to the technical software of the train. All necessary information about the technical condition of the cars is constantly transmitted to the head car of the train.
The cost of travel on premium class trains is flexibly differentiated depending on the upper or lower location of the seats. In luxury carriages, children under 10 years of age have free travel.

Payment Methods

We do not book train tickets, but only issue them in real time. We remind you that the fact of ordering a railway ticket is the unconditional acceptance of the public offer agreement (in accordance with Article 435 and Part 2 of Article 437 of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation).

OJSC Russian Railways (RZD) is a state-owned company, a monopolist in the railway sector. It has many different divisions; passenger transportation on long-distance trains is carried out by DOSS and JSC FPK. In addition, there are suburban companies (“PPK”), organizations in the regions (for example, “Railways of Yakutia”), “Aeroexpress” (a comfortable train from the airport to the railway station) and others.

In the mid-90s, rail transportation in Russia became unprofitable, and the Ministry of Railways became mired in bureaucracy. This became the reason for reforms, and Russian Railways was created in 2003. The state owns 100% of the company's shares. Russian Railways has about 520 passenger trains on 120 routes, which transport passengers to 21 countries around the world. So it's really tight.

JSC FPC

JSC Federal Passenger Company (JSC FPK) is a subsidiary of Russian Railways; it owns the majority of passenger traffic on long-distance trains. All new passenger carriages meet high standards of comfort, but many old carriages still run from the days of the USSR. Let's look at several types of trains owned by JSC FPC.

Unbranded trains

They are distinguished by a lower level of service and “Soviet” cars. The shelves are covered in burgundy faux leather. Toilets are closed at stations. Very few outlets. Often there is no air conditioning. Once upon a time they could run as part of branded trains, but now, due to long use, something in them may not work or be dirty. There are no additional services. The main advantage of such trains is the cheapness of tickets.

Branded trains

These are trains with new carriages and a wide range of services. They travel faster than other trains and are assigned convenient departure and arrival times. Tickets on a branded train are always more expensive than on a non-branded train. Features of such compositions:

  • new cars - there is air conditioning, two dry closets, explanatory electronic displays, a microwave and a refrigerator at the conductor's;
  • in each compartment (in luxury and compartment cars) there is a soft backrest at the bottom bunk, an electronic lock on the door, a button to call the conductor, a socket, and an individual night lamp;
  • There are free services: food, newspapers, traveler's kit, etc.

The first branded train in the USSR appeared in 1931. It was called “Red Arrow” and sailed from St. Petersburg to Moscow. Today there are already 92 branded trains.

Premium trains

"Premium" are positioned as luxury trains. They differ from other branded trains in their higher speed (which means less travel time) and the presence of additional services (for example, there is a TV in the compartment car).

Premium formulations appeared in 2009. They operated in several directions, but some of the trains were later canceled due to low load or renamed. Now Premium trains run from Moscow in three directions: Adler, Kazan, Novorossiysk.

Double decker trains

These are trains with double-decker compartment and luxury (SV) carriages. The dining car is also two-story: there is a bar on the first floor, and a dining room on the second.

A double-decker train can carry twice as many passengers, so its ticket price is usually lower than a similar single-decker train. They provide the comfort of a compartment car at the price of a reserved seat. But such carriages are also more cramped: you cannot sit on the top bunk, there is less space for luggage. It is planned to replace all reserved seat carriages with double-decker carriages within 10 years.

Russia's first double-decker train began operating on the Moscow-Sochi route in 2013. In 2016, there were already several such trains; they travel to St. Petersburg, Samara, Voronezh, and Kazan. More about double-decker trains

"DOSS"

The Directorate of High-Speed Transport (“DOSS”) is responsible for the new generation of high-speed trains. The first was, which in 2009 connected Moscow, St. Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod. It accelerates to 250 km/h and covers the distance between the two capitals in 4 hours, which takes a regular train more than 8 hours. And already in 2010, the second electric train was launched - running from the northern capital to Helsinki (Finland). In 2015, on the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod route, Sapsan was replaced by a high-speed train, reducing travel time by 20 minutes. Tickets for many high-speed trains are more expensive than others on the same route.

The seated train reaches speeds of up to 160 km/h. It is used as a high-speed train on flights lasting up to 5.5 hours. Lastochka operates on many routes in the European part of Russia. Depending on the flight, some of the trains belong to the carrier DOSS, and some belong to JSC FPK. Tickets for Lastochka are inexpensive, cheaper than all other trains on these routes.

Most high-speed trains operate with only comfortable seated carriages. Each train has its own set of additional services: wi-fi, leather seats with footrests, seats that can be turned in the direction of travel, a dining car, and so on.

Almost all passengers know that there are fast and accelerated trains, branded and passenger trains, but not many know how they differ. We propose to address this knowledge gap.

What types of trains are there?

First you need to understand the classification of trains. The classification criterion is route speed, that is, the time it takes to cover the distance from one point to another. Read more about what types of trains are depending on speed below.

High speed

High-speed trains are considered the fastest. They are capable of moving at speeds of 200–400 km/h. Their main feature is that they cannot move on regular rails. A special fabric is built for them that can withstand heavy loads. The high-speed highway appeared back in the 2000s and continues to actively develop. Now the fastest trains run from the capital to other cities, and also allow you to get from Russia to European cities.

For example, the most famous high-speed train is the Sapsan, which runs between the capital and St. Petersburg and allows you to cover the distance between these cities twice as fast. "Allegro" is an international high-speed train, as it runs from the Northern capital to Helsinki.

Russian Railways is currently constructing a high-speed line, the length of which is about 1,500 km. Trains will be able to travel along it at a speed of about 400 km/h. It will connect Moscow with the Volga region and Siberia. The train will run from the capital through Kazan to Yekaterinburg. In the future, it is planned to build a similar highway from Moscow to Sochi.

Express

The route speed of such trains is slightly lower - about 140 km/h, although on flat sections of the road they can accelerate to 200 km/h. In ordinary life, a distinction is not made between high-speed and high-speed trains, since the movement of both categories requires a special track.

  • “Swallow” is a train that moves at an average speed of 140-160 km/h. Such trains travel from the capital and St. Petersburg to Nizhny Novgorod, as well as throughout the Krasnodar Territory.
  • "Strizh" - travels at speeds of up to 200 km/h along the route from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod and back.

Ambulances

The technical speed of fast trains is no different from passenger trains, but due to the fact that they make few stops (only at large stations and train stations), they cover the distance much faster. The route speed of such trains ranges from 50 to 90 km/h. The ticket price is a little more expensive. There are hundreds of trains traveling across the vastness of the state, in different directions.

For example, a train called “Sura” runs from Moscow to Penza, and “Lotos” will connect the capital with Astrakhan. The fast train “South Ural” also runs between Moscow and Chelyabinsk. There are other trains of the same type on other routes. Usually they do not have a special name, but are simply numbered. Fast trains depart from Moscow to almost all regions.

Accelerated

There is no such name officially. This category includes freight trains that travel faster than regular trains. They are used for transporting perishable goods. Not used for transporting passengers.

Branded

In terms of speed, branded trains are fast, as they travel at a speed of 50-90 km/h. But this is their only similarity. A special feature of branded trains is a high level of comfort and service. Passengers can count on a range of additional services that make the trip as comfortable as possible. The basic level of service is also set at a high level. Conductors working on such trains must undergo special training.

All branded trains have their own name. For example, a train running from the capital to Perm is called “Kama”, and from Moscow to Tomsk – “Tomich”, from the capital to Kirov – “Vyatka”, and so on. When purchasing tickets, you should pay attention to whether the travel document is marked “fast”. In its absence, the train will move like a regular passenger train, but will have comfortable conditions and a range of services for the convenience of passengers.

Passenger

Such trains travel the route at speeds of up to 50 km/h, although technically they can travel no slower than trains classified as “fast”. The main difference is that they stop at every stop, which significantly slows down his movement along the route. Such trains are in great demand, despite the fact that they move slowly.

There are two reasons for this:

  1. The fare is quite low, especially compared to other categories.
  2. By passenger train you can get to a small station or a small town. Express trains simply do not stop at such stations.

Passenger trains are branded, that is, they have improved service and additional services. An example of such a train is “White Nights” - a train that runs from Moscow to Vologda. If the ticket does not have the designation “fast”, it means that it is a passenger ticket by default.

The number of passenger trains is becoming less and less every year. They are being replaced by trains that can move faster.

For many, the only difference between branded and regular trains is the price. But this is only a consequence, and the reason lies in real differences.

Definition

Regular train(aka passenger) - a train made up of passenger cars for the purpose of transporting people and their luggage. Like any train, it has one or more locomotives, and is also equipped with signals (audible and visible) to indicate a "head" and a "tail".

Branded train(aka branded passenger) is the same train, but classified as comfortable. This category appeared in the USSR and exists to this day in a number of countries of the post-Soviet space. A mandatory condition for maintaining “brandedness” is periodic re-certification in the FPC - “Federal Passenger Company”.

Comparison

Considering that the often difficult conditions of traveling on a regular train are known to everyone, the features of the branded train will be listed below.

So, according to official information from Russian Railways, the following trains can apply for “brand name”:

  • consisting of modern carriages equipped with air conditioning and in operation for no more than 12 years;
  • with a convenient schedule and shortest travel time;
  • having a carriage with a double special compartment for passengers with disabilities;
  • with qualified guides trained according to a special program;
  • with improved quality of bed linen, bedding and sanitary items;
  • with preliminary covering of the upper berths.

A distinctive feature of such trains is also the presence of their own name, often characterizing the direction of travel: “Lotos” (Astrakhan - Moscow), “Baikal” (Irkutsk - St. Petersburg), “White Nights” (St. Petersburg - Vologda), etc. .

Branded train. Coupe

As for the cost of tickets, it is indeed 20-50% higher than the cost of traveling on a regular long-distance train. However, this is quite expected, given that in addition to the differences noted above, there is a list of services included in the ticket price. We will not dwell on the number of hot food items, drinks and printed publications, but the composition of the set of hygiene supplies is worthy of attention:

  • Economy class: napkins (paper and wet), comb, dental kit (brush, paste, toothpick);
  • Business class: the same as in the economy class set, plus soap, handkerchiefs, cosmetic bag, horn and shoe napkin;
  • Luxury class: the same as in the business class set, plus shampoo, body sponge, shower gel, hand cream, terry robe and slippers.

Naturally, all of the above is only part of the mandatory requirements. For example, few passengers know that according to clause 5.4.9 of OST 32-24-93 “Standardization of public services in railway transport,” radio communications must not only work, but also transmit:

  • greetings and words of farewell at appropriate moments when the train is moving;
  • information about travel rules and services provided;
  • announcements about departure and arrival times, as well as the duration of parking;
  • educational programs about the cities through which the train passes, etc.

Also, perhaps, news for passengers will be mandatory temperature control (in winter - 18-22 ° C, in summer - 22-26 ° C) without excuses from the conductors “we’ll go - it’ll warm up” or “we’ll go - it’ll be cool.”

Conclusions website

  1. The cost of a ticket for a branded train is 20-50% more expensive.
  2. The quality of the service provided by a branded train is higher, and the number of services provided, included in the ticket price, is greater.

A branded train is a train with high-quality service and a wide range of services.

The schedule of such a train is developed taking into account the most convenient time of departure and arrival at the final station or the shortest travel time.

Currently, branded trains transport passengers to various regions of the country and connect the capitals of the republics of the Russian Federation.

The main differences between branded trains:

1. Convenient schedule (compared to alternative long-distance passenger trains).

3. Qualified guides who have undergone training according to a special program.

4. Bed linen, bedding and sanitary items of improved quality.

6. Comfortable dining car with an expanded range of dishes.

And, of course, a guaranteed range of services: sales of tea and confectionery products, printed publications, souvenirs and other goods for travel.
