The main attractions of Ryazan and its environs

Ryazan can rightfully be called one of the most ancient cities that left a bright mark in the history of the Russian state. Archaeological excavations have shown that already in the 7th century AD, in the vicinity of Ryazan there was a well-fortified settlement, whose inhabitants were engaged in hunting and fishing, carried out active trade with neighbors, and erected houses and fortress walls.

The Ryazan lands became the homeland and source of inspiration for the poet Yesenin and the writer Paustovsky; famous masters of Russian landscape painting of the late 19th century worked and created their masterpieces here.

A visit to Ryazan will be interesting not only for lovers of history and art, but also for those who love the discreet beauty of the landscapes of central Russia and are interested in the history of Russian science and the armed forces.

There are also places to go around Ryazan - these are Yesenin's places and beautiful estates. The most important thing that cannot be missed is in.

The Kremlin was built in several stages, and its final appearance took shape in the mid-eighteenth century. The dominant feature of this architectural ensemble is rightfully considered the Assumption Cathedral, which was built according to the design of the Russian architect Ya. Bukhvostov in 1693-1699.

Often the walls of such structures are hidden behind powerful fortress walls, while the Ryazan Kremlin is surrounded by natural barriers - two rivers and a deep dry ditch. That is why nothing will prevent you from taking successful photographs of it from different angles.

Interestingly

In addition to eight temples, a bell tower and deep ditches, there are several museum exhibitions on the territory of the Kremlin:

  • An exhibition dedicated to the history of the Ryazan Museum-Reserve is located in the Oleg Palace - the most “secular” building of the Kremlin, where the church administration lived.
  • The Singing Building hosts a permanent exhibition telling about the national customs, everyday life and holidays of the Russian people.
  • Hotel Cherni, which at one time served as a resting place for wandering monks, will tell you about the secrets of the first Ryazan settlement - the most ancient settlement on the territory of Ryazan.
  • In the Consistory Building you can see fragments of wall paintings depicting scenes from the life of the justice authorities of that time: courts and litigation.

Historical Center

Those who want to feel the charm of ancient Ryazan need to wander around the historical center, especially since it is compact and has clearly defined boundaries. In fact, this is a rectangle marked by Griboyedov Street, Lenin Kremlin Val and Yesenin Street.

Lenin Street

(we move from Teatralnaya Square towards Sobornaya Street).

It is along this route that the most interesting administrative buildings, houses of wealthy merchants and representatives of city authorities are concentrated.

Do not miss:

  • Buildings of Gostiny Dvor (houses 24 and 26 on Lenin Street).
  • The house of the merchant Morozov, in which lived the young vice-governor of Ryazan, and later the famous Russian writer, Saltykov-Shchedrin (house 42).
  • The building of the noble assembly is an obligatory attribute of any self-respecting provincial city (house 57).

At the beginning of the 20th century, this street was chosen by merchants and business people of Ryazan. Real estate here was very expensive, so most of the buildings located on it belonged to commercial administrations and banks; there were famous shops and expensive shops here.

Now it is a typical pedestrian street of a tourist center. Here you can take a break and have a snack in a cafe, listen to street musicians.

It was on Pochtovaya Street that the first cosmetics shop of the rapidly growing rich merchant Maximilian Faktorovich was located. Some time will pass and the enterprising merchant will emigrate to America, where, slightly changing his name, he will become the founder and owner of the most famous brand in the cosmetics industry - Max Factor.

Kremlinsky Val is a street, a walk along which will allow you to admire interesting angles of the Ryazan Kremlin and take good photographs.

The central park of Ryazan, laid out at the beginning of the 20th century along the perimeter of the former Ilyinskaya Square. It was on this square that in 1895 the festive celebrations dedicated to the 800th anniversary of the city took place. Later, on the site of the square, a park is laid out, walking along which you can admire the panorama of the Ryazan Kremlin, as well as other, no less famous architectural monuments.

What may be interesting in the park:

  • Hill of the Savior on the Yara, which offers a panoramic view of the floodplain meadows located in the Oka floodplain. A 17th century stone church located on the top of a hill.
  • Ilyinsky Cathedral, erected by the architect Ya. Bukhvostov (who also built the Assumption Cathedral of the Ryazan Kremlin).
  • Monument to Sergei Yesenin.
  • The front gate to the park is the “propylaea,” which marks the entrance to the park and the exit from it to the territory of the Ryazan Kremlin museum complex.

Pavlov lived and worked in Ryazan, and the house-museum located on the street of the same name tells about this.

This rather cozy and ancient museum (the estate building itself is a well-preserved wooden house of the 19th century) displays a collection of personal belongings, books and household items of Academician Pavlov; the original furniture and interior elements are well preserved here. Recommended for visiting to anyone interested in the history of Russian biological science.
