“Tell me where you eat, and I will tell you who you are” - once in Vienna, you can safely paraphrase the famous aphorism.

The capital of Austria amazes with its gastronomic attractions: just look at the famous cafes of Vienna, where Mozart and Strauss, Bismarck and Freud visited! The city has sophisticated, elegant restaurants, noisy and lavish beer gardens, and absolutely incredible ones - some are located at an altitude of as much as 160 meters! In short, choosing an establishment where you can dine in Vienna will not be easy, but pleasure will be guaranteed.

Vienna's calling card - Restaurant Rote Bar

What are the best restaurants and cafes in Vienna that convey the atmosphere and spirit of real Austria? In order to answer this question, it is enough to go to the Sacher Hotel, the same one that is located next to the building of the Vienna Opera. It is here that you will find the famous restaurant that proudly bears the title of the calling card of the Austrian capital, Rote Bar.

Stunning imperial interiors, piano music, an atmosphere of luxury and peace - Rote Bar always keeps its brand impeccably. Coming here, guests have the right to expect a luxurious evening - and their expectations are more than justified.

The restaurant menu is classic, with an emphasis on traditional Austrian dishes. The dress code for guests is semi-formal or business suit.

The Hotel Sacher building houses several more gastronomic attractions in Vienna: the Anna Sacher restaurant. In both cases, you will find an unforgettable, unique atmosphere and exquisite cuisine, the crown of which is the original Sachertorte, decorated with a signature chocolate medallion.

The most fashionable restaurant in the Austrian capital - Steirereck

Steirereck is not just a major Michelin restaurant in Vienna, but – no less than – a true iconic landmark of the Austrian capital. Four Gault-Millau chef hats, 2 Michelin stars and an honorable 10th place in the ranking of the 50 best restaurants in the world confirm the high class of this respectable and chic establishment in Vienna.

Here you will get acquainted with modern Austrian cuisine: moderately traditional, moderately innovative - a stunning variety of dishes and (there are 25 types of bread alone!), stylish interiors, sophisticated atmosphere and truly royal service. And from the windows of one of the best restaurants in Vienna there is a beautiful panoramic view of St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Danube.

If you want to take a food tour and visit other Michelin-starred restaurants in Vienna, then you will have a difficult choice from 9 more stunning places: Mraz & Sohn, Walter Bauer, Le Ciel by Toni Mörwald, Opus at the Imperial Hotel, Konstantin Filippou, Edvard at the Kempinski Hotel, Tian, Amador and Silvio Nickol Gourmet Restaurant.

Unique Viennese style – Figlmüller

Figlmüller is jokingly called a “one-schnitzel restaurant”: this dish has been prepared here since 1905, carefully preserving the original recipe and traditions. Schnitzel a la Figlmüller is a real culinary masterpiece made from the best pork; its diameter reaches almost 30 centimeters and literally hangs from the edges of the plate.

In addition to luxurious schnitzels, the menu includes equally delicious dishes, for example, veal liver with baked apples and onion rings, chicken cordon bleu or the famous Tafelspitz. Interestingly, the menu varies depending on the address of the restaurant. Thus, Austrian beer is served only on Bäckerstrasse, and there is a larger selection of meats and desserts there.

The oldest Viennese inn – Griechenbeisl

It would be an unforgivable omission to describe the best restaurants in Vienna and ignore Griechenbeisel. This is an absolutely gorgeous place with a centuries-old history, a truly Austrian atmosphere and, of course, traditional and delicious cuisine. You can try Wiener schnitzel or Viennese potato soup while sitting comfortably in one of the many halls of one of the oldest restaurants in Vienna. Each room is decorated in its own style and recreates the atmosphere of bygone eras.

For more than 500 years, Griechenbeisl has gone from a small local tavern to a first-class restaurant, which at different times was honored by the presence of Mozart and Beethoven, Wagner and Strauss, Chaliapin, Pavarotti, Bismarck - more than 30 geniuses of world art and politics. This is evidenced by autographs in one of the restaurant’s rooms – the “Mark Twain Room”. By the way, today it is a protected architectural monument.

The most romantic restaurant by the water - Motto am Fluss

Among the restaurants in the center of Vienna, a special place is occupied by the romantic Motto am Fluss on the Danube Canal. This impressive structure has an architectural form reminiscent of an elegant cruise ship, from the “deck” of which a charming view of the city opens. The interior decoration of the restaurant is distinguished by Venetian motifs, laconicism and restraint of the interior.

Thanks to the skill of the chef and perfectly selected dishes, the menu leaves all guests satisfied without exception. In addition, Motto am Fluss is famous for its own baked goods, an excellent wine list and organic Austrian beer, which is brewed from local natural ingredients. This is certainly one of the best restaurants in Vienna for a romantic evening.

By the way, on the 3rd floor of the building there is a cozy cafe with an open terrace, where you can not only have dinner, but also have a private breakfast with a cup of coffee and a book in hand.

Restaurant with a gorgeous panoramic view - Das Loft

Das Loft is a chic restaurant on the 18th floor of the five-star Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom, where guests can taste gourmet cuisine and enjoy the stunning panorama of Vienna. In the evening, the ceiling of the restaurant is illuminated by original colored frescoes, which create the effect of a moving space - their radiance is noticeable even from the street.

The cuisine of Das Loft is international; the Austrian influence is practically not felt here. For example, the menu includes beef tartare, lobster bisque, and artichokes with burata, but Vienna Tafelspitz is worth looking elsewhere. After 6 pm there is a dress code in the restaurant.

Best tafelspitz in Vienna? In Plachutta!

Plachutta is a chain of restaurants in Vienna, a whole “family”, each creation of which has its own flavor. For example, Plachuttas Grünspan focuses on , while Gasthaus zur Oper is famous for its truly delicious Wiener schnitzel. But the signature dish of Plachutta is considered to be tafelspitz, which is served here in accordance with all traditions: with rich broth, bone marrow, several types of side dishes, sauces and seasonings. It is brought directly in copper saucepans, on a heated stand.

These are, without a doubt, some of the best, if not the best, restaurants in Vienna with Austrian cuisine and quite reasonable prices. Add to this the convenient location, wonderful atmosphere and good service - and you will hardly be able to resist visiting Plachutta at least once.

Prices: schnitzel with potato salad - 20-22 €, soups - 5-10 €, tafelspitz - 23-24 €, other meat dishes - 20-23 €, kaiserschmarrn and other desserts - about 8 € (prices and menus in chain restaurants may vary).

Classic Austrian beer hall – Salm Bräu

Right next to the lower exit of the Belvedere Park is perhaps the best beer restaurant in Vienna - Salm Bräu. The local beer is truly impressive, especially since most of the varieties offered are produced here, in our own brewery. Salm Bräu also has its own distillery - its signature pear schnapps, Salm whiskey and berry liqueurs are known far beyond Vienna.

Drinks are served with crispy and juicy pork ribs, knuckle, salads, soups, schnitzels - the menu in the restaurant is truly huge, as are the portions themselves. The interior, designed in a traditional and laconic rustic style, deserves special praise. In many ways, it is he who creates in the restaurant that very unique and organic atmosphere of an Austrian beer garden.

Prices: beer (0.5 l) – 4.20 €, liter of beer – 8 €, portion of pork ribs for two – 30.70 €, soup – 4 €, schnitzel with boiled potatoes – 18 €, cordon bleu – 15, 30€.

Of course, Salm Bräu is far from the only popular Viennese beer restaurant. For example, Ribs of Vienna, 7 Stern Bräu and the Centimeter restaurant chain are no less popular among locals and tourists.

The most famous Viennese coffee shop - Central

To paraphrase the proud aphorism of Coco Chanel, we can confidently say: “There are many cafes and pastry shops, but there is only one Central coffee shop.” The most famous and unusual cafe in Vienna is famous for the fact that since its opening back in 1876, it has become a favorite meeting place for artists and writers, artists and politicians. At various times, Sigmund Freud, Adolf Hitler, Peter Altenberg, Stefan Zweig, Alfred Polgar, Leon Trotsky and other historical figures drank coffee here.

Austrian cuisine is extremely unusual in that throughout its history it has absorbed national dishes from different regions of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, transformed them, and added something of its own. That is why Vienna, with its variations of some famous dishes, can surprise even those who have already had their fill of European cuisine. We will tell you where to eat in Vienna both in style and relatively inexpensively.

First, we consider it necessary to conduct a short excursion into Austrian cuisine. If you haven't tried these dishes, consider that you haven't been to Vienna at all:

The signature dishes of the restaurant are the same tafelspitz and schnitzel. The restaurant is so proud of how deliciously it cooks them that it even posted its recipes on its website, so that when you arrive home, you will have the opportunity to recreate that very evening at the Plachutta restaurant. The restaurant even sells cookbooks about Austrian cuisine.

Address: Wollzeile 38, 1010 Wien, Austria (there are 2 more restaurants from the same chain in Vienna)

How to get there: metro station Stubentor or Wien Mitte (orange line), train station Wien Mitte, tram 2 to the stop Stubentor

Working hours: daily from 11:30 to 00:00

Zur Alten Kaisermuhle

This restaurant, opened back in 1893 on the banks of the old Danube, cleverly harmoniously combines Austrian, Italian and Spanish cuisine.

The restaurant Zur Alten Kaisermuhle is distinguished by the fact that in its dishes it uses rare ingredients from strictly defined regions. Red peppers – exclusively from Galicia, Spain; trout - from Molln in Austria and Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy; and the Norwegian salmon served to guests comes from the fjords of Larvik, Norway. Even ice cream is brought here from Italy.

The main highlight is the atmosphere. In summer, when it is warm, you can sit on the summer terrace and admire the views of the Danube.

Rosenberger

Rosenberger is a chain of establishments, most of which are roadside restaurants, but their restaurant in the capital is exactly the place where you can eat in Vienna not only inexpensively, but also very tasty.

The Viennese Rosenberger is a self-service buffet restaurant. There is an incredible variety of dishes on offer here, and the cuisine here is international and not exclusively Austrian.

If you are looking for where to eat inexpensively in Vienna, this is the place for you – it’s already relatively inexpensive for a restaurant in the very center, and from time to time you come across very good deals.

Address: Maysedergasse 2, 1010 Wien, Austria (2 minutes walk from Albertina and Vienna Opera)

How to get there

Working hours: daily from 8:00 to 22:00

Lubin

The Croatian restaurant Lubin is a must-visit if you are staying in the Landstrasse (03) area and also love delicious fish. We ourselves chose it completely by accident, wandering around the map of the area with a yellow Google man in search of a place where we could while away a stuffy August evening in Vienna, and we hit the spot.

Lubin is located in a secluded corner 5 minutes walk from the noisy central street of the area - st. Landstrasse, so when dining on the outdoor terrace, nothing distracts visitors from enjoying their food and wine.

Right next to the restaurant is the Lubin fish store, which sells everything from fresh tuna fillets to scorpion fish.

Address: Hainburger Str. 48, 1030 Wien, Austria

How to get there: Kardinal-Nagl-Platz metro station (orange line)

Working hours: daily from 11:30 to 15:00 and from 17:00 to 00:00 (Sunday until 23:00)

If in Russia we have not developed a strong tradition of leaving a certain percentage of tips, then abroad be prepared for this. In many Austrian restaurants, service is included in the bill as a mandatory surcharge - this is not deception, not “rip-off” or arrogance - for the local culture this is absolutely normal. Just be prepared to pay 5-10€ on top for good service.

Cafes and pastry shops

Where to eat apple strudel in Vienna? Where is the best place to try Sachertorte? Where is the most delicious linzer cake? Each tourist will recommend different places, but we suggest starting with these.

Cafe Sacher

Cafe Sacher is located in the hotel of the same name in the center of Vienna, right opposite the Vienna Opera building - you can’t think of an even more suitable place to eat the national Austrian dessert in Vienna.

The hotel itself was opened by Eduard Sacher, the son of Franz Sacher, the same pastry chef. In 1892, after Edward's death, the business was continued by his widow, Anna Sacher. But after 42 years, the hotel was declared bankrupt.

During its existence, both the hotel and the cafe became such an iconic place that even after all the military and diplomatic difficulties, the Gürtler family, which today runs the business, easily managed to restore popularity to the place where today the most famous diplomats stay and thousands of tourists try the legend of Austrian cuisine in an authentic luxurious atmosphere.

Prices here are on average 2 times higher than in less famous cafes.

Address: Philharmoniker Str. 4, 1010 Wien, Austria

How to get there: Karlsplatz metro station (red, green, purple lines), trams 1 and 2 to Kärntner Ring. Opera

Working hours: daily from 8:00 to 00:00

Konzert Café Schwarzenberg

Where would Austria be without classical music? So the owners of this cafe, opened in 1860, think the same. Therefore, on Thursday and Friday from 19:30 to 23:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 17:00 to 20:30, Dida & Ernst musicians play piano and violin here.

Address: Kärntner Ring 17, 1010 Wien, Austria

How to get there: tram 2 and 71 to Schwarzenbergplatz, metro Karlsplatz (red, purple, green lines)

Working hours: Mon-Fri from 7:30 to 24:00, Sat-Sun from 8:30 to 24:00

CaffèCouture

This place will surely appeal to coffee lovers. It's for true snobs who can't be bought by the authentic ambience and rich history of old Viennese coffee shops.

CaffèCouture is a self-service cafe, and the interior decoration of the establishment can hardly be compared in any way to any historical place. But that’s even better, because the cafe’s reputation rests precisely on the quality of the coffee, which is regularly purchased from small farmers immediately after harvest.

Please note that there is very limited seating inside and it can get very crowded in the evening, so you may have to wait in line.

Address: Freyung 2, 1010 Wien, Austria

How to get there: Herrengasse metro station (orange line)

Working hours: Monday - Friday from 8:00 to 17:00, Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00

In this confectionery you can not only taste delicious apple strudel or Sachertorte (and they are really great here), but also treat yourself to all kinds of sweets and chocolate, which, by the way, will be a wonderful gift for any picky sweet tooth.

When I hear exclamations about Vienna as the capital of coffee, apple strudel, Wiener schnitzel, waltzes and images of Klimt, I look with regret at my interlocutors: “Oh, how they are depriving themselves by preparing to enjoy only this in Vienna!” Life is much more diverse than these five stereotypes. Therefore, in this column I and, perhaps, other “well-informed sources” will regularly reveal our Austrian “secrets”.

I know that Russians living outside Russia miss Borodino bread and pickles. I began to notice that I, no, no, even imagined the smell of real Wiener schnitzel. How happy I am when, feeling a longing for this tender piece of veal, I suddenly find myself in Vienna! Then, without a moment's hesitation, I fly to UbI, to this old establishment with a real stove and the welcoming atmosphere of a Viennese restaurant. Finding myself in Vienna with a group of friends who have read a lot of magazines about a healthy lifestyle, I have no choice but to take them to either Stomach or Tempel. In these restaurants, chefs are constantly experimenting with “improving” classic Austrian cuisine. It turns out very tasty!

Every weekday around 12:00 the mysterious word “Hansen” flashes under the ancient arches of the Vienna Stock Exchange. Brokers are whispering not about some strategic material, but about lunch. Located right in the middle of a huge flower shop in the stock exchange building, this extravagant restaurant intoxicates not only with the aromas of food, but also with fresh flowers! It's a pleasure to dine here. I wish you bon appetit too!
