Where is the best place to relax in sunny Greece? The best resorts in Greece for a beach holiday

A trip to Greece is the best seaside holiday you can imagine. The shores of Greece are washed by three seas, for every taste, wave height and beach type. From the west, the coast of the country opens into the Ionian Sea. Here are the resorts of the Ionian Islands - Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. The local beaches are a hundred meters long or more.

The beaches of the Ionian Islands offer the most child-friendly seaside holidays in Greece. Sandy and only occasionally pebble beaches, a gentle descent into the water - everything that is needed for bathing children. And the coast of Corfu, moreover, is replete with small shallow coves, where you will get not only a relaxing swim, but also privacy.

The Peloponnese Peninsula is washed by the waters of the Ionian Sea from the West, the Mediterranean Sea from the south and the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean Sea from the east. If you see your holiday on the beaches of Greece as calm and secluded, then this is the place for you.

Here you will be greeted by calm azure waves of the sea and wide, uncrowded sandy or pebble beaches, bordered by green groves. It’s simply impossible to think of a better place to relax with children. Choose one of the resorts of the peninsula - Corinthia, Argolis, Laconia, Elis, Achaia or Arcadia, and you will be guaranteed a great holiday.

The Chalkidiki peninsula enters the Aegean Sea with three prongs, reminiscent of the myth of Poseidon, who lost his trident here. The western peninsula, Kassandra, is especially loved by tourists, with crowds flocking here every year. But the middle “prong”, Sithonia, is more suitable for lovers of solitude.

The climate in Halkidiki is dry, the heat is easier to bear here, and the beaches are simply excellent. Wide strips of sand with a soft descent into the water make it possible to relax here with children. And where the waves are stronger, surfing and other extreme sports are actively practiced. The beaches of Halkidiki are famous throughout Greece for their water sports.

If you choose your tour to Greece with a seaside holiday on the island, then both the Aegean and Mediterranean seas will be at your disposal. On the west coast of the island, in the Aegean Sea, you will be greeted by constant waves. The beaches here are covered with pebbles, and this side of the island is loved by windsurfers.

The Mediterranean Sea, washing Rhodes from the east, is much calmer, and the beaches on this side of the island are sandy. So it’s quite a good place for a holiday with children. On the west coast there are the resorts of Ixia and Yallisos, and on the east - Kallithea, Faliraki, Kolymbia, Lindos.

The beaches of the island are cozy and sandy, with clear water. They are ideal for those who love nightlife and prefer to alternate swimming with relaxing in nightclubs. In the south of the island there are several beach resorts - Agios Iannis (3 km south of Mykonos town), Ornos (2 km), Platis Gialos (3.5 km), Psarou (3.5 km), Paranga (5 km) , Paradise (6 km), Super Paradise (7 km), Agrari (10 km) and Elia (10.5 km).

All resorts have extensive infrastructure, restaurants near the beaches and other amenities. And Paradise and Super Paradise have nudist beaches.

The island of Crete lies in the Mediterranean Sea. Its beaches are covered with pebbles and attract many tourists every year. Crete is famous for its network of water activities, from windsurfing to water parks. Therefore, both young people and married couples with children will feel great here.

Sandy beaches enjoy increased attention from tourists. Many vacationers, heading to Greece, look for well-maintained beaches with sand.

A good sand surface should be available on land and in water. Almost all Greek resorts offer high quality sandy beaches. They are well equipped and located close to hotels.

Where are the good sandy beaches in Greece?

There are over four hundred beaches in the country that have ever received high awards. There are no industrial enterprises or port areas near the resort areas. Therefore, the beaches are famous for their safe ecology. The shores of the islands are washed by the purest sea waters.

The infrastructure of the resorts is developed just perfectly. Therefore, you can have a good rest on any beach in Greece.

Over 400 beaches in Greece have received high awards.

Sandy beaches predominate in the country. They are available on the islands and on the mainland. Occasionally there are combined coatings of small pebbles and sand.

Sandy, well-maintained beaches are located right next to hotels and hotel complexes. The entrance to the water is usually gentle, which is very convenient for children.

The most popular bathing areas are in Crete, Corfu, Tersasana, Kontokalion and many other places. In almost any tourist area you will find a sandy beach that can be visited for free. If you are not embarrassed by the huge number of vacationers, then Greece is ideal for you.

The country has the best beaches in the world, where you can sunbathe on the golden, warm sand. In addition, it attracts tourists with the opportunity to combine a carefree holiday by the sea with educational excursions.

Athens is very popular in this regard. This place attracts lovers of ancient history. However, holidays there are quite expensive, and the city beaches are not particularly clean. Therefore, tourists have to go to country beaches.

When is it possible to vacation in Greece on sandy beaches?

The climatic conditions of the country do not allow vacationing there all year round. The area is influenced by the Mediterranean climate. It is characterized by dry and hot summers, but cool winters. Greece receives little rainfall, and the number of sunny days per year exceeds 300.

The beach season begins at the very beginning of May and lasts until mid-autumn.

The length of the season varies in different areas:

  • On the islands of Paros, Corfu, Kos and Crete the weather is slightly warmer. The climate there is milder than in other areas of the country.
  • In the south of Greece you can swim as early as April.
  • In the northern resorts (Kalikratia, Sithonia, etc.) the holiday season begins later.

Thus, the best time for a quality holiday is September and June. And the lowest prices are observed in April and March.

Sandy beaches on the listed islands attract tourists with children.

It is safe and convenient to relax on the coast. The downside of such beaches is the large crowds of people during peak season. In addition, near the shore the water is usually cloudy.

The sandy beaches of Greece are municipal. You can rent umbrellas and sun loungers there for a fee.

Holidays in Greece - a journey in the footsteps of legends

Any, even the shortest trip to Greece always begins with a dream. Dreams of touching something huge, incredible. Dreams of refreshing thoughts and the hasty pace of everyday life. Even if you've never thought about it, Greece will change your world - every new trip to this country is like starting life all over again.

Just think: today millions of tourists from all over the world relax on the sunny beaches of Greece, and several thousand years ago, if you believe myths and legends, great heroes and powerful gods walked on this same land. Since then, Greece has retained the mystery of antiquity and amazingly combined it with the carefree world of modern recreation.

From a small idea to a big delight: what to do in Greece

The very choice of a trip to Greece is a delightful start to the adventure! Fly to the legendary Athens and admire the Parthenon? Oh, of course! Staying on the picturesque island of Crete? Could be so! Or just relax and catch the sun with a glass of Greek wine on the beach of Corfu? Believe me, such questions can be asked endlessly - there is a sweet anticipation of magic in this :)

But no matter what you choose in the end, you are guaranteed a carefree trip with a generous seasoning of Greek flavor! Having opened the gates of new impressions, get ready to taste the sunny elixir of Greece: a relaxing holiday in a cozy hotel, carefully diluted with beach pleasure and a rich cultural program (an ingredient for true holiday gourmets!).

In addition, tours to Greece guarantee not only a carefree, but also a very tasty holiday. In cozy cafes and restaurants you will discover a wonderful kingdom of mouth-watering aromas and unforgettable tastes. The famous Greek salad (how could we live without it?), huge shrimps, crispy souvlaki (kebabs on skewers), delicious moussaka (layered meat dish), fresh vegetables and world-famous metaxa... In a word, here you can easily experience all the shades of culinary pleasure.

An incredible path to the crossroads of worlds

After having a good rest at the hotel, walking along the embankment at night and feeling the Greek flavor with the pleasant taste of olives, you can go in search of adventure. Armed with a collection of Greek myths, you can go to the legendary Olympus and feel its mysterious and truly supernatural power. Well, if you want to sign up for an “audience” with Zeus himself, the mighty lord of thunder and lightning, go to the remains of the Temple of Zeus - one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

The road will then lead you to a constellation of amazing sights. Incomparable temples and palaces, majestic gorges, immortal amphitheatres, markets and squares - in every stone you can feel the ringing voice of a great and inspiring history.

Having made such an amazing journey, visit modern water parks and open the doors of Greek nightclubs. So you will witness how mighty antiquity smoothly and rosyly intersects with the world of Greek modernity. And believe me, this intersection deserves the closest attention!

Kitchen

Greek cuisine is a variety of vegetables, meat dishes and seafood, olives, cheese (the most famous and popular is feta) and wine. All dishes are generously seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice and local spices. Greek cuisine is truly amazing! Dozens of small meze appetizers, octopus tentacles generously sprinkled with lemon juice, fresh lettuce in olive oil, huge pieces of lamb and large copper jugs with thick and tart Cretan wine. About 500 varieties of wine are produced in Greece. There are also stronger drinks in Greece, for example, ouzo - aniseed vodka. If you add water to it, it takes on the color of milk. Here you can also try tsipouro (grape vodka) and mastic (vodka made from resin-treated mastic trees).

Beaches and swimming season

Greece is a country of beaches. Long and small, cozy, sandy and rocky, on the mainland and on the islands, in large cities and small villages - wherever there is a sea, there are beaches. All beaches in Greece are municipal. The swimming season begins in mid-May and ends at the end of October.

Souvenirs and shopping

Greece is famous for leather goods and furs at attractive prices, jewelry and ceramics. Greek wines, Metaxa, almonds, pistachios, olives and various folk art products are excellent souvenirs that can be purchased anywhere in the country.

Resorts

Coastal resorts are located throughout the mainland and on the islands: from the resorts of the Athens Riviera to the beaches of the north-eastern coast of Greece, the Halkidiki peninsula. The islands of Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, as well as numerous small islands that are so interesting to travel around, are extremely popular among tourists all over the world. Holidays in Greece are suitable for absolutely everyone. There are excellent conditions for children and parents, romantic corners for lovers, sea and sails for athletes, SPA hotels for those who want to become more beautiful, noisy bars for young people, shopping centers for shopaholics and a rich culture for those who love an educational holiday.

Do you know that…

Gluttony is not a sin in Greece. There is simply no more interesting and varied cuisine than Greek. It is not for nothing that the first cookbook in the history of mankind was written in Greece. Moreover, most of the dishes described in it were made from fish and seafood. The Greeks consider cheeses to be the main advantage of their cuisine, of which there are a great many varieties. Apparently, this is why they are the world leaders in the consumption of this product. We can't help but thank the Greeks for the Olympic Games, political science, philosophy, drama and Western literature. And, of course, for democracy, which also originated in Greece. The ancient Greeks loved sports competitions, and they considered it best to train their muscles in the nude. Finally, the Greeks have an incredible love for their beautiful country, as can be seen from the Greek national anthem, which consists of 158 verses!

Resorts of Greece:

Athens and Attica

Attica is a peninsular territory of Greece, which, in addition to several dozen resorts, includes Athens. Every year thousands of tourists come here to enjoy the Mediterranean Sea, sandy beaches, excellent hotels and the rich historical heritage of Ancient Hellas.

Zakynthos

Zakynthos is a beautiful Greek island located in the Ionian Sea. Picturesque nature, rocky mountains, forests, clear sea and sandy beaches have made Zakynthos an excellent holiday destination. Tourists also come to the island for the magnificent historical monuments that Greece is so rich in.

Kavala

Kavala is a colorful tourist city, which for several years in a row has occupied the highest positions in the ranking of the best resorts in Greece. Foreign tourists come here to get closer to ancient traditions and see legendary sights from mythology.

Corfu

One of the famous islands of Greece, Corfu gained even greater fame after Queen Elizabeth of Austria ordered the construction of a palace here, which was later acquired by German Kaiser Wilhelm II. Majestic mountains descend to the very coast, forming picturesque sandy bays with secluded places where it is so pleasant to hide from the noise of the big city.

Crete

Crete receives millions of tourists every year. On this magical island you will find everything you need for an unparalleled holiday: good beaches, comfortable hotels, enchanting nature and grandiose historical monuments - the legacy of ancient civilizations.

Poros

Poros is one of the islands of the Saronic Gulf (a link between two other islands - Aegina and Hydra), located at a distance of 2.5 hours by ferry from Athens. High-speed "Flying Cat" ships will take you to the island in just over an hour. About 4 thousand people live on the island.

Rhodes

Rhodes is the sunniest island in Greece. It’s not for nothing that the ancient Greeks once chose it as a place of worship for the sun god Helios. Today, in this corner of the Mediterranean you will find a relaxed beach holiday, active entertainment and an interesting excursion “deep into the centuries”.

Evia

The island of Evia is an ideal choice for those who prefer a holiday away from the routes traveled by Russian tourists. The combination of clear sea, blue sky and uncrowded beaches is a serious argument for those who want to spend their holidays in peace and quiet.

If your goal is the sea and a beach holiday, then it is best to go to the islands in Greece.
I’ll tell you about several places with clear seas, fairly deserted beaches and beautiful scenery around.
But first you need to decide on the time of rest and where to buy a plane ticket.

When to vacation in Greece

It is best to go to the seaside before the collapse with European holidays.
If in June and July you can put up with the crowds at Moscow airports, then in August the majority of Europeans, with an average salary several times higher than the Russian one, go on mandatory vacation.
And they go not to their grandmothers in the village, but to the sea: to Spain, Italy, Greece and Croatia.

The consequences of this are not catastrophic, but they will pinch you painfully on the thigh - where the wallet is.
Prices for everything rise one and a half times.
Therefore, my recommendation is this: try not to go to European seaside resorts in August.

Instead of August, it is better to go at the beginning, or even better - in the middle of September:
- sea is warm
- the weather is sunny
– prices are gradually decreasing
The only difference between September and August is that it gets dark faster outside.
But that's not a problem, is it?

When is the sea warm in Greece?

Already in June, the sea on the Greek islands warms up enough to swim.
Therefore, the recipe for “when to go to the sea in Greece” is simple: from June to the end of September.
Addition to this recipe: from July 20 to the end of August you will pay more for a beach holiday than at other times.

Where to get tickets in Greece

  • Take it if you are going on vacation: Cassandra, Sithonia or island Thassos
  • Take it if you are going to relax: on the islands of the Ionian Sea ( Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Corfu) and on the islands of the Aegean Sea: Skiathos, Skyros, Syros and several dozen more.
  • Take it if you are going to relax on the island Crete.

Entry point – Athens

What's good about flying to Athens:
– in the Athens direction there is a larger selection of regular airlines flying from Russia.
You can make sure by playing with .

In Athens you can rent a car by finding and ordering it on the website.
The cost of car rental in Athens is cheaper than at the resorts.

3 hours drive from Athens airport - port Hair, from which you can take a ferry to the eastern Greek islands: ( , Skyros, Syros).

You can view the ferry schedule and plan travel logistics on the website https://tickets.ferries.gr/

By the way, if you go by car from Athens to Volos or to the west, to the Ionian coast and the islands Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos– you can stay at Meteora overnight and see the “floating monasteries”.
Review of this place: Meteora Greece reviews

The site has a lot of material about places in Greece that are good for a seaside holiday - a beach holiday.
I'll just give links to these places.

Where to relax in Greece (east)

Halkidiki (Thessaloniki airport): eastern Greece

Sithonia Peninsula is an hour's drive from Thessaloniki airport (how to rent a car in Thessaloniki).

The peninsula has many excellent beaches and almost deserted bays: .
A holiday here is not a package-hotel holiday.
This is a place for lovers of independent holidays: a car, apartments and complete freedom.

Thassos Island

The island of Thassos is located east of Halkidiki.
It takes about two hours by car to get to the ferry crossing.
It takes 30 minutes by ferry to the island.

Skiathos Island

The island of Skiathos is located east of the mainland coast of Greece.
You can get to the island of Skiathos by plane from Athens or Italy (Bari, Rome) - the island of Skiathos is popular among Italians.

By sea, Skiathos island can be reached by ferry from Thessaloniki, Hair, Ag. Konstantinos.
Ferries that take cars on board - from Mantoudi(Evia) and Kymi.

Where to stay on Skiathos

It is better to book hotels on the island of Skiathos in advance on the booking website.
We stayed in the Ostria apartments or in neighboring hotels (see the booking map) - good location and excellent beach.

Islands of the Ionian Sea (west of Greece)

Islands Lefkada, Kefalonia, Zakynthos And Corfu are located west of the capital of Greece - Athens.
There are no regular flights from Russia to these islands.
You can fly with a transfer in Athens or get off in Athens and drive towards the Ionian Sea in a rented car ().

Lefkada Island

Where to stay in Kefalonia

In my opinion, the best place to base on the island of Kefalonia is the city Aya-Evfemia.
Firstly, a greater choice of accommodation, a good beach, boat rentals and a strategic location on the island.
All good beaches in Kefalonia are equidistant from Agia Evfimia.

Crete

Crete is the largest island in Greece.
Located south of the mainland.
It is characteristic that cold currents pass near the coast of the island of Crete, and its location in the open sea is a consequence of windy weather.
Below is a description of several areas on the island of Crete.
